When Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA announced that he created a one-of-a-kind album that he would auction off to the highest bidder, critics were skeptical about the concept. Forbes magazine just released a brief documentary about the secret album, ‘The Wu — Once Upon a Time in Shaolin,’ and unveiled a snippet of one of its tracks.
Reporter Zack O’Malley Greenburg traveled to Morocco to see first-hand what this highly guarded project looks and sounds like.
First off, the packaging — designed by British-Moroccan artist Yahya — is very exquisite. The CD will be encased in a handcrafted silver-and-nickel box, which comes in another handmade wooden treasure chest.
As for the music, Tarik “Cilvaringz” Azzougarh handled all of the production on the album.
“Despite everybody thinking that this is some great publicity stunt or marketing ploy, this has been a genuine concept from the get-go,” he tells Forbes. “It happened to get a lot of publicity — great — but it is a genuine concept with a genuine core and a genuine goal.”
With the help of the RZA, Cilvaringz handpicked which Wu rapper’s verse would go on each song based on his vision.
Cilvaringz lets the Forbes writer hear a snippet of one song that features Ghostface Killah and a surprise guest.
Overall, it will be interesting to see the response once this secret album is available for someone to buy for million of dollars.
