Talib Kweli Drops 'Lord of the Light' From 'Catch the Throne' Mixtape

Imeh Akpanudosen, Getty Images

It’s a beautiful thing when hip-hop and television collide. Game of Thrones, HBO’s uber-popular medieval drama, returns next month to a flat screen, plasma or laptop monitor near you and to drum up the anticipation — as if it need any more — the people behind the series have unleashed the first leak from the Catch the Throne: The Mixtape Vol. 2 mixtape in the form of the new Talib Kweli record, “Lord of the Light.”

The song catches Kweli dropping a slew of nods to characters and pivotal moments in the Game of Thrones series that die-hard fans of the show will especially enjoy. “I am a huge fan of Game of Thrones and I feel honored that HBO asked me to be involved at this level. I really nerded out on this song and there’s a Game of Thrones reference in just about every line,” Kweli stated.

The full mixtape, which serves as the second installment to the original with Wale and Common, will include 15 songs and feature appearances from the likes of Snoop Dogg and Method Man as well as a mix of artists from various genres.

Catch the Throne: The Mixtape Vol. 2 will be released for free this month. Also be sure to tune into the premier of season five, which will air on April 12 on HBO.

Trina Searches for a 'Real One' With Rico Love

Veteran rapper Trina is looking to make 2015 a comeback year of sorts and has returned with a brand new single, “Real One.”

Featuring guest vocals and production from Rico Love, the Diamond Princess’ latest offering is a pretty good way to reignite her buzz. Even though she’s been away from the scene for a while, dropping her last album, Amazin’ in 2010, and having since split from her longtime record label, Slip-N-Slide Records, Trina sounds fully rejuvenated and out to reclaim her place among the top female rappers in the game.

“All she ever wanted was a real one, but they’re so hard to find / A big future, she just wanna build one, but all she gets is waste of time,” croons Rico Love at the beginning of the record before Trina swoops in for the kill.

Attacking the track with the same sassy ferocity that made her a star initially, she’s hitting on all cylinders from the start. “I keep yelling f— boy this and f— boy that / I should’a never let the f— boy tap / Gotta blame myself, I should’a been gone / You’s a new a– n—–, I been one,” she rhymes, stunting on all the weak dudes from her past.

If you let us tell it, “Real One” could be the record to put Trina back in the running for the title of the baddest bitch in rap if she keeps churning out tracks like this. Keep an eye out for the Miami representative’s upcoming album, slated to drop later this year.

Wu-Tang Clan's Single-Copy Album Seized at JFK Airport, RZA Explains 88-Year Clause

Rommel Demano, Getty Images

Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nothing to f— with, but that doesn’t mean the group are above the law. The Clan’s mysterious single-copy album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, was initially deemed as contraband and held by TSA agents at John F. Kennedy Airport Sunday (March 1).

Page Six reports that Cilvaringz, the beatsmith behind a majority of the album’s production work, landed at JFK on a flight from Morocco and discovered he had misplaced the key to open the custom-made box with the album inside. This lead to TSA’s suspicion of what was actually in the box. Luckily, the single-copy album in the locked case was officially cleared. However, that wasn’t the only controversy surrounding Once Upon a Time in Shaolin this week.

The album, which has been talked about with the significance of a rare painting by Wu-Tang founder RZA, has been kept under lock and key and won’t see the light of day for nearly a century — unless you’re the highest bidder and you agree to the terms. What are those terms? The album cannot be reproduced for commercial use due to an 88-year clause.

But upon hearing about the album’s reported 88-year “non-commercialization” clause, Wu-Tang member Method Man was less than pleased — he actually didn’t fully understand what the clause entailed. XXL asked the rapper about the unique stipulation, which angered him. “F— that album. I’m tired of this s— and I know everybody else is tired of it, too. F— that album, if that’s what they are doing.”

“I haven’t heard anything like that, but if they’re doing crap like that, f— that album,” Meth continued. “Straight up. I’m just keeping it 100. When music can’t be music and y’all turning it into something else, fuck that. Give it to the people, if they want to hear the shit, let them have it. Give it away free. I don’t give a fuck; that ain’t making nobody rich or poor. Give the fucking music out. Stop playing with the public, man.”

After getting wind of his brother in rhyme’s scathing comments, the Abbott headed over to Twitter to let off a few retorts of his own in an attempt to set the record straight, clarifying that the 88-year non-commercialization clause did not mean that fans would not be able to hear the album, but rather the project could not be duplicated and sold for profit during that period of time.

The first in the series of tweets were aimed directly toward Meth and XXL, with RZA responding, “let us clarify for you. A 88 year ‘non commercialization’clause. Means corporations can’t buy it & mass produce it for sell.”

He also addressed other fans with gripes for RZA’s direction with this project, stating “everything physical is about time. It’s the commodity we sale which is surely limited.Working but not seeing Children grow up is sacrifice.”

RZA even threw a jab at those complaining about the status of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin since the group’s most recent commercially-released album, A Better Tomorrow, was met with lukewarm sales and indifference from a number of listeners.

The status of this much-discussed album — which has been pegged as a work of art — may see some closure sooner than later, as Paddle 8, the auction site that is selling the LP, has received bids upwards of one million dollars. Maybe the buyer will be more charitable than RZA and give the album away for free upon its purchsae, or it could languish in artistic limbo for the foreseeable future.

Pharrell Williams x Adidas Supercolor Collection

Hypebeast

Seeing as how Pharrell Williams has had an ungodly amount of hits on the radio for his entire career, it’s no stretch to say that he is known for quantity. Well, he looks to take his obsession with big numbers a step further courtesy of his Adidas collaboration.

The producer is the brain behind the Adidas Supercolor Collection, which is a massive drop that contains 50 colorways of the Adidas Superstar silhouette. Based on this early look, it’s a totally covered tonal release cast in high-quality leather with a pop of gloss on the tongue.

You’ll be able to get your hands on the full spectrum of colorways on March 20 at both Adidas and Offspring. Hopefully they’ll be priced in such a way that you can pick up more than one pair.

Drake's Love Connection With 10 Famous Women [PHOTOS]

Drake’s dating life has been the talk of social media recently. The Toronto rapper was spotted getting lovey-dovey with video model Bernice Burgos while vacationing in Perth, Australia. There’s no word if they’re officially a couple, but photos of their time Down Under lead us to believe that Drizzy is fond of the 34-year-old Puerto Rican model.

So since Drake is unofficially not a single man anymore, we decided to take a look back at the Toronto’s rhymer’s past relationships with some famous women.

The “6 God” rapper has been romantically linked to a bevy of beautiful women. From celebrities like Tyra Banks to athletes like tennis queen Serena Williams, Drake plays the field quite well and his scoreboard is on fleek right now.

Drake’s most high-profile girlfriend is undoubtedly Rihanna. The 28-year-old rhymer and the R&B diva were inseparable when they started dating a few years ago. From the recording studio to making it rain in the strip clubs, the pair were a hot item. Then somehow Chris Brown and Drake end up fighting over RiRi, which escalated to their infamous nightclub brawl in New York.

Other women in Drake’s past include plenty of bodacious strippers and models like Maliah Michel, Cyn Santana and Dollicia Bryan. Even Brown’s ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran found herself in the web of Drake.

Overall, the Young Money superstar hasn’t been struggling when it comes to hooking up. Drake has courted quite an impressive list of ladies during his career. Check out Drake’s Love Connection With 10 Famous Women here.

Tinashe Hits the Mojave Desert in 'Bated Breath' Video

Tinashe enjoyed a breakout year in 2014, and is looking to build on that momentum in 2015. The music video for her single, “Bated Breath,” featured on her debut album, Aquarius, is a pretty good start. The military-inspired clip is breathtaking from the start and features the beautiful songstress dressed in fatigues in the middle of the Mojave Desert.

The visual was filmed by Stephen Garnett (who Tinashe contacted directly to work on the clip) and directed by the singer herself. Her vision for the finished product came out better than one would expect knowing that she spearheaded the creative direction.

“I don’t like to sit around waiting for people to do things for me,” Tinashe stated in an interview with W Magazine. “So when I know my label’s not going to produce music videos, I’ll either make them myself or I’ll find people that I think are cool and reach out to them directly. I’m like, ‘F— it. I’ll just do it.’”

The Los Angeles native crawls through the desert sand, simulates falling through the air while lying on the crackled ground and sheds tears while thinking of her struggles.

We’re just glad this art in motion got to see the light of day, as the nearly nine-minute clip showcases depth when it comes to conceptual aspect of being an artist and furthers her case as the current princess of R&B.

20 Songs to Celebrate the Superwoman in You

D Dipasupil / Jason Merritt / Tristan Fewings / Jason Merritt / John Sciulli, Getty Images

Whether it’s keeping the household together to breaking through the glass ceiling in the workplace to pushing for progress on Capitol Hill and making an impression on the red carpet, women have made major contributions to our lives. With March marking Women’s History Month, the Boombox looked through the catalogs of some fearless females in hip-hop and R&B to pick songs celebrating women.

From the classic tunes that remind men to treat their ladies right to the dance-worthy anthems that prove girls do run the world, these are the tracks that have served as the soundtrack for superwomen everywhere. They even topped the charts at times, scoring another big win for girl power. More than a few of these songs have graced your playlist and if they haven’t, we’ve just given you a female empowerment pack.

While the music industry, like many others, is dominated by men, these women demonstrate they have the power to change the world through their powerful words and voices. Check out 20 Songs to Celebrate the Superwoman in You.

1

'Freedom'

Queen Latifah, Yo Yo, Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes, MC Lyte, Nefertiti, Salt-N-Pepa, Patra, Meshell Ndegeocello

Recorded after the American Music Awards in 1995, 'Freedom' was a collaboration among many of the 90s big African-American female singers and rappers. Originally off Joi's 1994 album, 'The Pendulum Vibe,' 'Freedom' was an ode to the many of the iconic females throughout history including Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Shirley Chisholm, and Angela Davis. Looking back on their women, the artists who participated in the track show that the fighting spirit lives on into the present.

2

'A Woman's Worth'

Alicia Keys

Released in 2002, as a follow up to her hit, 'Fallin,' Alicia Keys explains what men should do in order to treat their ladies right in 'A Woman's Worth.' The mid-tempo ballad reflects on the things she would love her man to do for her. Because he treats her right, she'll be sure to take care of him. It's all about compromise on this track, and we love Alicia for a nice blueprint to share with any man who's out of touch.

3

'Doo Wop (That Thing)'

Lauryn Hill

While many of these songs are meant to hype up the ladies, Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is a bit more cautionary. She warns all women about those guys who care more about their player status, luxuries and the superficial things in life in the 1998 critically acclaimed song. With her effortless flow, she tells females that they can hold their ground and not let a trifling man get in the way of their success.

4

'Respect'

Aretha Franklin

The moment Aretha Franklin steps onto the stage we all pay attention. And in her 1967 version of the Otis Redding track, 'Respect,' she gave women the words and the courage to demand the right treatment. As soulful as the song is, the message is simple yet quite powerful. If a man wants some loving from his lady, all he has to do is show her some good old fashion respect.

5

'I'm Every Woman'

Chaka Khan

While some know the Whitney Houston version, Chaka Khan's 'I'm Every Woman' is the anthem that not only speaks to just about every female out there but also is one that just puts us in a good mood. The 1978 track was definitely a hit at the discos and didn't only appeal to the ladies in clubs but the men as well. Just as naturally as Chaka does it, the song speaks to how every woman has grace and a fire that makes us capable of anything.

6

'Q.U.E.E.N.'

Janelle Monae feat. Erykah Badu

When Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu combined forces on 'Q.U.E.E.N.,' we knew it would be an instant hit. Released in 2013, the song might spell out the title of a female leader but actually means something more than just female empowerment. While it does encourage women to stand up for themselves and not be afraid to be who they are, the title actually spells out "Queer, Untouchables, Emigrants, Excommunicated, and Negroid" -- proving that Janelle and Erykah were a wider audience with their positive message.

When Eve first stepped foot onto the scene, she was known as the first lady of the Ruff Ryders. However when she decided to go off on her own, Eve proved that she didn't necessarily need too much help to kickstart her solo carrier. And that's thanks to tracks like 2001's 'Who's That Girl,' off her sophomore effort, 'Scorpion.' She's confident on the mic with a strong flow and lyrical command. With this song, she inspired women to not worry about what the haters think and just keep doing our thing.

8

'No More Drama'

Mary J. Blige

Mary J. Blige has been one of those voices that we not only admire but also should really listen to her. Her 2001 song, 'No More Drama,' was an emotional on touching on the struggles that people go through -- whether they're the average Joe or the biggest of celebrities. However the video touched on a topic that is still a bit of a taboo today -- domestic violence. The video depicts a woman gathering the courage to leave her significant other and live a safer life. If that doesn't inspire you, we don't know what else will.

9

'Fly'

Nicki Minaj feat. Rihanna

Put two strong females into a studio and what do you get? If it's Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, then that is the song, 'Fly.' Off Nicki's 2010 LP, 'Pink Friday,' she raps about overcoming adversity. Whether it be tough obstacles to dealing with the ones who try to bring you down, which in Nicki's case, has been the skeptics, you're able to rise above that and fly. While she's called this a "female empowerment song" in the past, Nicki also says that it can apply to both guys and gals.

While Kelis says that the song can mean whatever we want it to mean," 'Milkshake' was the track that everyone heard and no one could get out of their heads. Not only did it have a catchy beat, but it was also a song that meant more than getting down in the club. The 2003 hit celebrated female sexuality in a big way because it gave us the license to admit that we can be sultry and own that sex appeal without the insecurity of being ridiculed for it. Women like to be sexy, too, and there's nothing wrong with that.

11

'None of Your Business'

Salt-n-Pepa

Before TLC hit the scene with their outspoken tracks, Salt-n-Pepa were one of the first girl groups to really speak their minds. And their track, 'None of Your Business,' hits all the right marks. Telling the world that they should mind their own and stopping judging others was liberating to hear, especially because they touched on the fact that women should be able to make the same sexual choices that men do. While there are a number of songs on this list that touch upon the topic, this track was one of the first ones that pushed boundary.

12

'Independent Women Part 1'

Destiny's Child

If there was anything bigger than finding out that the 70s hit show, 'Charlie's Angels,' would be remade, it was the fact that Destiny's Child would provide the theme song for the film. And their song, 'Independent Woman Pt.1,' was right on point. Right after hitting play on this track, just about every lady feels like she is a super hero and can conquer the world.

13

'Run the World (Girls)'

Beyonce

Beyonce proves that her "girl power" attitude extends beyond the Destiny's Child era. Her 2011 single, 'Run the World (Girls)' did not only produce some memorable live performances but also really called out all the ways women really have changed and helped the world progress into the future. She may be a proud wife and mother, but that doesn't mean she, other women, can't be a strong, independent woman either.

14

'You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo'

Yo-Yo feat. Ice Cube

Yo-Yo broke into the rap game in the early 90s as Ice Cube's protege. However, she didn't stay in his shadow too long as her 1991 debut album, 'Make Way for the Motherlode,' was a winner among critics. And her track, 'You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo,' was definitely one of those razor sharp track that shows how unafraid she is to speak her mind but also make men shake in their boots.

Like some of the tracks on this list, Santigold's 'Girls' was inspired by the females of a particular generation, which in this case is today. Part of the HBO series of the same name, the bouncy track seems to fit perfectly with the New York City swag that Santigold as well as the females in the video carry as well. Like the hook-filled beat and spunky lyrics, this song will instantly get you ready for that girls' night out or just hype you up when you're feeling less than stellar.

In 2001, India Aire put out a simple acoustic soul tune called 'Video.' And while it was an easy one to groove to, the message in the lyrics was more powerful than one could imagine. Writing straight from the heart, India inspired females young and old to love and accept the features they were born with. And even if we aren't the supermodel in the magazines, we are always queens.

From the moment they dropped 1992's 'Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip,' TLC have set the precedent that they are strong females who speak their minds. With hits like 'Unpretty,' 'No Scrubs' and 'Red Light Special,' they tackled everything from body insecurities to female sexuality. On 2002's 'Girl Talk,' the group warns men to treat their ladies right otherwise everyone will know about it. Although the there are other tracks that speak to the idea of female empowerment, this one shows how women can be there for one another and got each other's backs.

Being the youngest in one of the most iconic musical families in history must have been tough for Janet Jackson. Between living up to what her brothers did and being the baby of an already famous family, she had a lot of people watching her. And in 1986 her third album, 'Control,' spoke out on how much she wanted everyone to let her be free to do as she pleased. The title track of the album pays homage to that idea and telling everyone, especially her family, that she should be able to live her own life. And we should be do so, too.

Known for her uncensored views and no-holds-barred songs, M.I.A. takes female empowerment on with her 2012 tune, 'Bad Girls.' Despite the reckless nature of the hook, M.I.A. crafts a song that shows that women can do anything a guy can -- only better. And if you're not getting it in the track, then you'll see it in the video. Featuring women covered head-to-toe drifting through the dessert in throwback car, she drew people's attentions to the fact that Saudi Arabia didn't allow women driver's licenses. And although the visual did offend some, it also inspired others to get the law abolished.

20

'Ladies First'

Queen Latifah feat. Monie Love

The 90s has been known as the golden age of hip-hop. While the music was great, there were few women who made their marks in the genre during the beginning of that decade. However Queen Latifah and Monie Love made their marks by putting out the 1990 hit, 'Ladies First.' Showing the resilience that women have had throughout the years, the track proves that no matter what women experience (even childbirth) they get through it.

Chris Brown's Secret Love Child's Name Revealed

Sergi Alexander, Getty Images

The last few weeks of Chris Brown‘s life have been filled with turmoil to put it kindly. First, he gets turned away at the Canadian border and has to cancel a scheduled Between the Sheets tour performance. Now, the news that he has a secret love child has been plastered across numerous media platforms, leading to his girlfriend, Karrueche, dumping him on Twitter for the world to see. The one bright spot in all of this is that the “Loyal” singer has the gift of a beautiful baby girl to lessen those blows.

TMZ reveals that the name of Brown’s 9-month-old daughter is Royalty. The child’s mother, Nia, is a 31-year-old model that has appeared in a number of music videos. Whether or not she consulted with Breezy on their daughter’s name is not yet known. Considering the singer’s unique path in life — besides releasing albums, he’s a dancer and an artist — it’s not far-fetched of him to agree on such a distinct moniker.

Nia, who apparently remains friends with Brown and lives in Texas, has partied with him and Karrueche before. The former couple hit up Last Vegas in 2013, and a photo TMZ uncovered shows Karrueche and Nia in a friendly embrace while in another image, Brown isn’t far behind her.

Word is that Brown is ecstatic about being a father and will be an active participant in Royalty’s life, even if it means cross-country flights to see her.
