35 Years Ago: Stevie Wonder Shakes Things Up With 'The Secret Life of Plants'
The unwieldy title of Stevie Wonder‘s ‘Journey Through ‘The Secret Life of Plants” grew out of its origins as a soundtrack to a documentary based on ‘Secret Life of Plants’ — a 1973 book written by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird suggesting the possibility that plant life has feelings, specifically toward empathy and eroticism.
Released on October 30, 1979 via Motown’s Tamla label, the project is better known now simply as the deeply earnest, strangely involving, utterly free-form home of ‘Send One Your Love,’ a song that went Top 4 on both the soul and pop charts. The rest of ‘Secret Life’ is dominated by instrumental passages — many of them keyed by the early use of a digital sampling synthesizer. They were meant to sync up with the film, which followed a group of scientists and artists who attempted to chart these possible feelings, rather than as stand-alone items.
Still, that didn’t stop the project (which arrived as the follow up to 1976′s 10-times platinum blockbuster ‘Songs in the Key of Life‘) from racing toward the top of the Billboard album list, anyway — though sales quickly flattened. It was, of course, a move as bold as it was commercially foolhardy — but Wonder was unbent.
“I think that we cannot allow ourselves to put boundaries on what we do musically,” he told the Washington Post in 1979. “An element of surprise is always good.”
Oh, the surprises tucked away inside were many, as Wonder worked to create something brand new. Call it prog soul, maybe? The results, whatever their title, amounted to a boundary-free blend of funk and disco, pop and classical, African and Eastern orchestration, ambient and R&B. Turning his back on the pre-packaged pop that he’d just recently ridden to dizzying fame, Wonder instead traces plant life from ‘Earth’s Creation‘ and ‘The First Garden‘ — the latter of which features a lovely duet between a birdsong and his harmonica — through the idea of reincarnation through the different ‘Seasons,’ and into the revelation of these heretofore unknown plant senses.
Whether listeners ended up buying into the theory matters less than how open, how vulnerable, and ultimately how communally loving Wonder’s approach is — especially on the propulsive ‘A Seed’s a Star and Tree Medley.’ Oh, and also how radical. Few at his level of success would risk so much, and Wonder remains proud of that risk.
Later, he described ‘Journey Through ‘The Secret Life of Plants” as one of his most exciting creative moments — saying that the album “was an experimental project with me scoring and doing other things I like: challenging myself with all the things that entered my mind from the Venus’s Flytrap to Earth’s creation to coming back as a flower.”
That said, a return to pop styles would hurtle each of Wonder’s four subsequent titles back to platinum status — leaving ‘Journey Through ‘The Secret Life of Plants” — despite it having originally been subtitled ‘Volume I-II’ — as more one-off than career redirection. There would be no ‘Volume III.’ Instead, ‘Hotter Than July,’ featuring the hit ‘Master Blaster (Jammin’),’ arrived less than a year later.

Boosie Badazz Releases 'Life After Deathrow' Mixtape
Fans have been waiting patiently for Boosie Badazz to drop his new project and it’s finally here. The Louisiana native debuts the ‘Life From Deathrow’ mixtape.
Inspired by his four-year stint in prison, Badazz’s mixtape boasts 18 songs about his mindstate while he was locked up. Tracks like ‘Murder Was the Case,’ ‘I’m Comin’ Home’ and ‘Streets On Fire’ feature the ‘Wipe Me Down’ rhymer reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster he was going through during his incarceration.
On ‘I Feel Ya,’ Boosie composes a series of heartfelt lyrical letters to incarcerated friends, detailing stories of events that led to their imprisonment. Then on ‘All Falls Down,’ the rapper takes aim at those who turned their back on him while he was in prison.
Elsewhere, on the bouncy ‘Cruisin,’ featuring Yo Gotti, Badazz gets turned up for the streets and later shows his romantic side on the R&B-tinged ballad ‘Boosie Love.’
The mixtape ends with the solemn ‘O Lord,’ on which Badazz spits remorseful rhymes and asks God to release him from prison.
“The judge gave me that time, dawg, my heart stop / My eyes watered up on me, n—-, my sugar drop / I need to be out this bitch, they got me stressin’,” he raps.
Overall, Badazz has injected some truth serum into the streets about prison life and his past struggles on ‘Life After Deathrow.’ It’s an honest reflection that will appeal to the fans who stood by him since his time away.

All black everything will never die but if you are looking to add a slight variance to your dutifully drab wardrobe we’ve found an option for you. The Nike Air Max 90 is the next to be given a colorway suitable for safely switching up that dress code.
For this iteration of the model we see black tumbled leather and nubuck played against one another and just when things start to feel typical we are tossed a curveball by wa of the midsole. Backed by black with flecks of white tossed in for an ‘Oreo’ effect the little bit of noise perks things up perfectly.
These are available now at select retailers and if you are in the NYC area you can cop them from Ronnie Fieg’s KITH for $140.

Watch T-Pain's Impressive Performance Without Auto-Tune [VIDEO]
T-Pain is famously known for using Auto-Tune, which made people assume that he couldn’t really sing. Well, you know what happens when you assume, don’t you? On Wednesday (Oct. 30), the rappa-ternt-sanga performed an NPR Tiny Desk Concert with just a keyboardist and no Auto-Tune. The result? Amazing.
He played a three-song medley of ‘Buy You a Drank,’ ‘Drankin’ Patna’ and Rihanna’s favorite tune, ‘Up Down (Do This All Day).’
“I know everyone is wondering where the Auto-Tune is going to come from, it’s OK, I got it here in my pocket,” he jokes before his performance.
The 30-year-old crooner showcased his vocals skills while sitting on a stool — unplugged. Props to pianist Toro for flipping the script and playing the chords from Warren G’s ‘Regulate’ during T-Pain’s rendition of ‘Up Down (Do This All Day).’
T-Pain’s fantastic performance left fans in shock and awe. So much so, they tweeted their amazement on Twitter. Clearly, everyone now knows how much of a talented singer he is with and without Auto-Tune. Check out the reactions below.

Ice Cube Heads to 'Sesame Street' to Chill With Elmo [VIDEO]
From a gangster rap pioneer to a family-friendly actor in films like ‘Are We There Yet,’ Ice Cube has cemented himself as a versatile entertainer that can reach the masses on multiple levels.
Now he can add ‘Sesame Street’ guest to his resume, as he took time out of his busy schedule to hang with Elmo and teach him, as well as viewers, about the word “astounding.”
“Astounding is when something is so amazing it catches you by surprise,” explains the respected lyricist, director and actor.
Cube then proceeds to do a few magic tricks, like making a giant penny disappear. Then he grabs a magic hat for his second trick and makes a baby dinosaur come out, giving the rapper another chance to show Elmo what “astounding” means.
In his last trick, Ice Cube turns himself into an actual ice cube in puppet form. What’s funny is that the makers of the puppet actually make the cube look like the rapper, complete with a goatee and droopy eyes. The skit is extremely cute and funny at the same time, and if anything, it shows us just how far hip-hop has come.
Who would’ve thought the man who rapped “When I’m called off, I got a sawed-off, squeeze the trigger and bodies are hauled off,” would be standing next to Elmo in one of the most popular children shows of all time. Pretty crazy, huh?
