Frank Ocean's Dad Hits Russell Simmons with $142 Million Lawsuit

Frank OceanPascal Le Segretain, Getty Images

R&B crooner Frank Ocean has been relatively quiet but his absentee father is causing a stir. According to TMZ, the singer’s dad, Calvin Cooksey, has slapped Russell Simmons with a whopping $142 million lawsuit.

Cooksey is suing the rap mogul and his pop culture website Global Grind for allegedly referring to him as a deadbeat dad in a news story. He claims that Ocean’s mother, Katonya Breaux Riley, has kept his son away from him throughout his childhood.

“He wasn’t allowed to be a father to Frank because his ‘Money Grubbing mother’ moved and hid the boy from him,” the lawsuit states.

Ocean’s father is angry that Simmons would publish a false story about him without checking the facts and never bothered to use his real name.

Cooksey, who describes himself as a singer, writer and inventor, claims that the article defame him and ruined his career. He is seeking loss of future income.

Attorneys for Russell Simmons had no comment on the matter.

Does Ol' Dirty Bastard's 'N—- Please' LP Stand The Test Of Time?

Ol' Dirty Bastard N PleaseElektra Records The late Wu-Tang Clan member Ol’ Dirty Bastard was one of hip-hop’s most lovable and interesting characters since his introduction to the world on the Wu-Tang’s landmark debut album, ‘Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).’

But after the release of his 1995 debut album, ‘Return to the ’36 Chambers: The Dirty Version,’ ODB became a breakout star and a viable hit maker (hear Mariah Carey’s ‘Fantasy’ remix).

Returning from an extended hiatus due to his erratic personal life, he released his sophomore offering, ‘N—- Please,’ on Sept. 14, 1999. The collection debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart after moving 93,000 copies in its first week of release. Three months later, the album was certified gold by the RIAA for having 500,000 copies shipped in the U.S.

Unfortunately, it would be the last studio album from ODB who tragically passed away from a drug overdose on Nov. 13, 2004.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of ‘N—- Please’ and we decided to give Dirt McGirt’s final LP a spin to determine if it still stands the test of time.

The Neptunes-produced 'Recognize' features comedian Chris Rock on the intro promptly telling listeners that "this ain't no commercial song." ODB then swiftly proves he's as zany and unpredictable as ever, despite his nearly five-year hiatus.

ODB follows up the leadoff track with the frenetic 'I Can't Wait.' Irv Gotti comes through in the clutch with a banger as he uses a sample of Mark Snow's 'Theme From T.J. Hooker.' ODB's nonsensical musings doesn't do the trick on this outing, leaving him below average already on his second album.

After randomly thanking Rick James for the inspiration behind this track, ODB delivers us a tune worthy of a hesitant two-step at least. Produced by the Neptunes, Russell Jones coyly croons about a 'cold blooded' lady that he has to get in his clutches.

'Got Your Money'

Featuring Kelis

The Neptunes produced the album's only hit single, 'Got Your Money.' On the track, Ol Dirty Bastard spits hilarious lines like, "I don't have not trouble with you f---ing me, but I have a little problem with you not f---ing me." Kelis' flawless guest vocals on the infectious hook make this track a certified classic and a signature song in the late rapper's catalog.

Big Baby Jesus sends out a PSA to the Caucasian culture vultures on the incendiary 'Rollin' With You.' Co-produced by Mr. Fingaz and Irv Gotti, the songs sees ODB giving the middle finger to what he feels are infiltrators of hip-hop culture without a f--- to give.

6

'Gettin' High'

Featuring Raison Da Zukeeper, 12 O Clock, La Da Darkman and Shorty S---stain

ODB gives a few of his Wu affiliates some air-time on the Dirty-less posse cut 'Gettin' High.' Featuring Raison Da Zukeeper, 12 O'Clock, La Da Darkman and Shorty S---stain, each rapper gets in a few quick jabs over the Buddah Monk-produced track. The end result is not too shabby and a minor highlight on the album.

7

'You Don't Want To F--- With Me'

Save for a few decent lines scattered throughout the track, The DL and Irv Gotti co-produced 'You Don't Want To F--- With Me' is a bit pedestrian. The hilarious hook is great to sing along to, but as a whole, this joint doesn't really do it for us.

Following the less than stellar previous song, ODB redeems himself on the album's standout title track. RZA contributes a sublime sounded bouyed with triumphant horns on the back end of the track, which prove tailor-made for Dirty's inebriated rhetoric.

'Dirt Dog' sees ODB spitting his usual random, stream-of-conscience banter on top of a beat by Buddah Monk. Nothing in particular stands out about this track by Ol' Dirty standards, relegating it to skip-button status and deemed forgettable.

Free exchange, no robbery is ODB's idea of a good time. On the bluntly titled 'I Want P----.' RZA's grungy sample of Blood, Sweat & Tears' 'You've Made Me So Very Happy' along with Ason's demands for vagina make for the perfect backdrop to a drunken night on the prowl.

11

'Good Morning Heartache'

Featuring Lil Mo

Ol' Dirty slows down the tempo and dedicates a song on the bluesy 'Good Morning Heartache.' Assisted by Lil Mo on the vocals, the pair create beautiful magic with this unexpected gem.

Things get festive with the Tru Master-produced song 'All In Together Now.' Between proclaiming himself a dalmatian and sending shouts to all colors and creeds, Big Baby Jesus delivers a rare cognizant verse on the jambori of a beat.

Listeners get an unexpected treat in 'N---- Please''s unlisted bonus track, 'Cracker Jack.' Produced by RZA, the beat is nothing short of indelible, with ODB's random slick talk and shenanigans playing as background chatter more than actual rhymes.

Does Eve's Debut LP 'Ruff Ryders' First Lady' Stand The Test of Time?

Interscope Records During the late ’90s, hip-hop witnessed a resurgence of female rhymers emerging on the scene. While the late ’80s saw a rennaissance of its own with rappers such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Salt & Pepa and many others, their songs was more party hearty and socially conscious than lusty and criminal minded like Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown.

In 1999, a New York-based record label Ruff Ryders Entertainment — riding high off the multi-platinum success of their franchise player, DMX — introduced a femme fatale of their own from Philadelphia named Eve. Formerly known as The Eve Of Destruction, the rapper joined the label after a failed stint on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records.

Eve manage to score a radio smash with ‘What You Want’ from the label’s compilation album ‘Ryde Or Die Vol. 1′ compilation and was chosen to follow behind DMX.

On Sept. 14, 1999, Eve released her debut album, ‘Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady.’ The collection debut on the Billboard 200 chart in its first week of release, becoming the third female rapper in history to do so behind Foxy Brown’s ‘Chyna Doll’ (1999) and Lauryn Hill’s ‘Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ (1998).

The album, powered by the radio-ready singles ‘Gotta Man’ and ‘Love Is Blind,’ would go on to sell over two million copies and establish Eve as one of the top female artists in the game.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of the album’s release, so we decided to review each track and see if Eve’s ‘First Lady’ still stands the test of time.

1

'Let's Talk About'

Featuring Drag-On

'First Lady' begins with the Drag-On-assisted 'Let's Talk About.' On the song, Eve wastes no time proving that she is more than just the token, cute-faced rap chick. "Let's talk about platinum plaques / Hanging on my wall, see me decorated / She's the one, heard em' say it, see me celebrated / I pop s--- when it's necessary, not for nothing / I use clips for the big beef, see me busting," she raps. The two Ruff Ryder rookies bounce off one another effortlessly over the Swizz Beatz production.

2

'Gotta Man'

Featuring Mashonda

The "pitbull in a skirt" gets a little lovey-dovey on the Swizz Beatz-produced 'Gotta Man.' Serving as the album's lead single, Eve dedicates a few bars to her boyfriend and promises him love and loyalty for life.

3

'Philly, Philly'

Featuring Beanie Sigel

Fellow Philly rhymer Beanie Sigel makes an appearance on the piano-driven, hometown anthem 'Philly, Philly.' Showing love to the gritty streets that raised them, Eve manages to slightly best the Roc bully with her verse, lending more evidence to the fact that she can do more than hang with the big boys.

On 'Stuck Up,' Eve makes it known that no scrubs and broke dudes are allowed in her cipher. Over a melodic synth groove, she raps, "Bratty type, spoiled by the best black / Caddie Escalade, '99 edition, get that / And what you in equals to a Shwinn and I ain't with that / Not impressed by 'all of this is mine' but we can split that."

5

'Aint Got No Dough'

Featuring Missy Elliott

'Ain't Got No Dough' continues Eve's bashing of guys who are low on the funds. While she delivers lyrically, the atrocity comes when Missy Elliot sings the hook and the lackluster beat derails this track. Skip it.

6

'Love Is Blind'

Featuring Faith Evans

The cautionary tale 'Love Is Blind' features Eve weaving a second-hand account of domestic abuse between a female friend and her partner. "I don't even know you, but I hate you / See, all I know is that my girlfriend used to date you / How would you feel if she held you down and rape you / Tried and tried, but she never could escape you," she raps. The song was a bright spot on the radio airwaves and positioned Eve as not just the run-of-the mill, sex-driven female rapper, but one with a little substance to match.

7

'Scenario 2000'

Featuring DMX, The Lox and Drag-On

Eve calls in her Ruff Ryder brethren -- DMX, the Lox and Drag-On -- for the epic posse cut, 'Scenario 2000.' Each member delivers vicious rhymes, with Eve proving her worth as a lyrical tyrant with bars like, "E-V-E, my dogs believe in me / Petty thugs hide ya cake, never teasing me / I show love to all my bitches hustling ones / Tussle wit' thieves, making moves, second to none." Top bragging rights also go to 'Kiss who goes completely bonkers on the track.

8

'Dog Match'

Featuring DMX

The "pitbull in a skirt" teams up with Dark Man X on the Swizz Beatz-produced banger, 'Dog Match.' Both go for broke with rewind-worthy bars, making for one of the more superior cuts on the album.

9

'We On That Shit'

Featuring P.K.

The P.K.-produced 'We On That Shit' sees Eve rhyming about violent robberies and leaving no witnesses. Dropping three quality verses, the First Lady of RR continues the LP's winning streak and making herself a terror on the microphone.

10

'Maniac'

Featuring Swizz Beatz

Eve turns up the tempo on the LP with the horn-blowing 'Maniac.' Swizz Beatz's high-octane track matched with Eve's performance on the mic make this joint a winner.

The 'First Lady' closes out with the reflective rap ballad 'Heaven Only Knows,' which was produced by DJ Shok. On it, Eve reflects on her rise in the rap game. "Went from dancing on table-tops to making labels pop / For the love of the money, so I can cop everything from icy rings to drops-tops / And, now I'm on top / But to look back on my reality, happy I stopped." Overall, the song puts an unexpected, yet satisfactory end to her debut album.
