Brandy to Make Broadway Debut in 'Chicago'

BrandyAlberto E. Rodriguez, Getty Images

Brandy will be making her Broadway debut in the hit musical Chicago next month.

The R&B singer and actress will take on the role of Roxie Hart, which has previously been portrayed by Jennifer Nettles of the country duo Sugarland. Brandy’s run in the Broadway musical will start on April 28 and will continue for eight weeks until June 21, where she will take her final bow on the New York City stage.

This isn’t the first time Brandy has combined her acting and singing talents. While starring in Moesha, there were a few episodes in which she sang. However, she really showed her musical theater chops when she starred alongside the late Whitney Houston in the 1997 made-for-TV remake of Cinderella — Brandy became Disney’s first ever black princess.

Aside from her singing career, the songstress has been focusing on her role as Chardonnay Pitts in The Game on BET. In 2014, she won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

For more information on the show and tickets, you can visit the musical’s website.

Hustle Simmons Attacked by Bleu Davinci's Crew at SXSW 2015 [VIDEO]

When it comes to Hustle Simmons defending himself against an attack, the guy is no slouch at all. He proves this in newly released footage that showcases men in rapper Bleu Davinci’s crew attempting to beat him up.

It all went down over the weekend at SXSW in Austin, Texas, where Simmons was hosting his annual Hustlepalooza showcase. Maybach Music Group rapper Tracy T wanted to perform but apparently, there wasn’t enough time for him to get onstage and a verbal confrontation took place between Simmons and Davinci’s crew.

The argument quickly turned physical when someone from Davinci’s entourage punched Simmons and other men continued to jump in. It sounds like Simmons was completely done for, right? Wrong. He quickly turned the tables and started beating up the guys who jumped him. In fact, each person that punched Simmons was met with instant resistance.

By the looks of it, Davinci’s crew seem to be more overwhelmed than Simmons, since they failed to knock the big guy off his feet. The only thing they were able to do to slow him down was grab his dreadlocks. They even tried to hit him with a speaker.

When the rumble was over, Simmons walked away unscathed and addressed the crowd. “I put this s— on for you all,” he said. “I don’t give a f— about a BMF or none of that motherf—in’ s—. I’m a grown ass f—in’ man. I don’t disrespect them. You don’t disrespect me. I’ll fight every n—- on this motherf—-er. I ain’t never no bitch so when you come to s— like this, respect the f—in’ stage. Everywhere you go, act like a f—in’ king or queen.”

Watch footage of the incident above and check out the rest of Simmons’ words.

Kid Cudi vs. T-Pain – The Boombox Battle

Kid Cudi T-PainThe Boombox

Kid Cudi takes the win in this week’s The Boombox Battle and squashed Charles Hamilton’s winning streak. After two straight wins, he couldn’t beat the overwhelming votes — 76.87 percent to be exact — from Cudder’s fans.

Spending more time on movie sets than in studio booths these days, the Cleveland native returns to the mic with his latest single “Love.” Sampling Ratatat’s “Sunblocks,” he laments about loneliness but sounds triumphant by the time he reaches the hook.

“Don’t be so down, come on young homie / You’ll be okay, you’ll find real love / All of the stories the hero gets lonely, now is the time to show all you’re made of,” he delivers in his melodic rapping tone.

T-Pain is ready to take on Cudi this week with his new track,”Let Your Hair Down.” Off his upcoming mixtape, The Iron Way, the rapper nvites The-Dream and up-and-coming singer Vantrease on the track. He also delivers his signature Auto-Tune vocals. Whether or not you like the technological enhancement or his natural voice, the mid-tempo track has a sultry vibe to it. Pain and Dream both try to get a seductive girl to go home with them. And while the lyrics convey that the eye candy is a temptress, both singers don’t hold back on their desires either.

“Girl, make me wanna spend some money on it / Too sweet, shorty put some honey on it / Girl, what’s under there, what’s under there / You shakin’ that gummy bear on my gummy worm / Come on, back it up like a Cadillac / You can cause a wreck / I run into the back of that,” Pain delivers on his verse.

Who will win this week? Will it be Kid Cudi’s thoughtful tune about wanting some love or T-Pain’s sultry bump-and-grind track? Only you can decide. Go vote for your favorite song in the poll below. Remember, you can vote once per hour until the poll closes on Tues., March 31, at 10AM ET.

T.I. Announces New Album 'Trap's Open'

Once known as the brash young MC claiming the throne of southern rap, T.I. has grown into the role of the wise veteran with a wealth of experience and knowledge soaked up during his decade-plus run in the game. And while his penchant for hot-headed behavior has diminished, his hunger has not, evidenced by the Atlanta native’s announcement that his new album, Trap’s Open, on the way.

The second in his Paperwork trilogy, T.I. is looking to come full circle musically with this album and make a return to the musical stylings that first put him on the map — one of which was his breakout album, Trap Muzik. In a recent interview with HHS87, Tip shares a few details on the upcoming LP.

“It’s a trilogy. So the first installment — [Paperwork]: The Motion Picture — was supposed to be cinematic… it was supposed to be nostalgic,” says T.I. “It was supposed to give an application of the sounds of yesteryear mixed with the hip-hop of today. This next one is going to be unapologetically gangster. You know, just straight trap music. And it’s called Trap’s Open.”

When asked if we can expect any features on the new album, Tip says, “Nah, not yet,” but one of the King’s rap star friends is sure to pop up somewhere during the proceedings. T.I. has always had a penchant for sharing the mic with his peers on his projects. If he were to decide to go for dolo on this effort, we wouldn’t make any objections at all, as he is more than skilled enough to handle the task and we would probably be gifted with some great music as a result.

But regardless of the bells and whistles, a new album from T.I. is always good news and we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any additional details that we get our hands on regarding Trap’s Open.

Rich Homie Quan Assaults Security Guard, Escapes on Speedboat [VIDEO]

In a scenario that sounds like a plot from an action flick, Rich Homie Quan is accused of punching a security guard at a Miami nightclub and then making a quick getaway on a speedboat.

According to WSVN-TV, the Atlanta rhymer and his entourage wanted to get inside LIV nightclub at the Fontainebleau Hotel early Monday morning (March 23). The security guard, Christian Cajigas, denied his entrance because the club was filled to capacity. This didn’t sit well with the rapper and he felt some type of way.

According to a police report, Rich Homie Quan threw a tantrum and threatened to bum-rush the doors before mentioning the name of Miami rapper Flo Rida.

“I’m Rich Homie Quan, and I’m a rich millionaire, (expletive). I’m coming through these doors. I’m with Flo Rida,” Quan said, according to the report.

Then Quan punched the security guard right in the nose before his entourage joined in and pummeled him to the ground. Afterward, the “Lifestyle” rapper darted away and jumped into a nearby speedboat and fled the scene.

The security guard’s attorney, Joshua Hertz, said his client suffered a possible broken nose, cuts and bruises on his face and a chipped front tooth.

Since the dustup, Quan, who could be facing an assault charge, has not been seen in public. However, he did share a selfie of himself with a big smile on his face on his Instagram account today (March 24).

Meanwhile, Miami Beach Police are still investigating the case and would like to talk with Rich Homie Quan.

Nike Air Max Zero

In favor of keeping things interesting, Nike‘s latest Air Max design rewinds time to before the shoe was even created. Tinker Hatfield’s masterpiece is rooted in a trip to Paris and a long lost sketch that was unearthed and brought to life to help celebrate the shoe’s legacy of timeless innovation.

The story goes that the Nike Air Max was inspired by the Centre Pompidou’s inside-out design and Tinker’s desire to show the world just what made Nike’s runners so comfortable. His original sketch was poured over to create this modern iteration complete with an Air Max Ulra outsole and an upper with a blend of fuse and mesh for durable breathability. In a very cool personal touch, the insoles bear Tinker’s signature as well as 3/26, which is the date of Nike’s annual Air Max Day celebration.

That last sentence should let you know when you’ll be able to cop these but in case you’re just joining us, look out for them on March 26. You’ll be able to find them at Nike for $150 a pair.

Action Bronson Honors Foxy Brown for Women's History Month [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Astrid Stawiarz / Michael Loccisano, Getty Images

March is a big month for Action Bronson. He’s finally released his major label debut, Mr. Wonderful, after delivering single after single including “Big League Chew,” “Terry” and “Baby Blue” featuring Chance the Rapper. If you’re not familiar with the charisma and comedy in his rhymes, it’s time you paid attention. But as much as March is about Bronson, it’s also all about the ladies.

If you’re an Action Bronson fan, then you know he loves women in all shapes and sizes. Case in point, his hilarious 2013 video for “Strictly 4 My Jeeps,” off Saab Stories, which featured a rather voluptuous female lead character dressed in a barely-there metallic gold bikini and a slew of video vixens rocking red bodysuits.

In honor of Women’s History Month, which first began as a week starting on March 7, 1982, we thought who better than Mr. Wonderful himself to share his thoughts on women who have made an impact in music.

“When I think of influential females in hip-hop, my mind goes to Foxy Brown, hands down,” Bronson tells The Boombox. “I am going to tell you, Foxy Brown’s first album and when she was on the Firm s— with [Nas and AZ]. Whoever was writing her rhymes was ill and she was saying them ill too. Ill Na Na was fire.” Brown’s debut album was certified platinum in the U.S., helping to pave the way for female MCs.

But while Bronson respects Foxy and other ladies in rap, if he were to make a song commemorating women, the outcome would be a bit more personal. “If I would make a song dedicated to any woman it would have to be my mom, because you know she’s been their since I came out of her,” the rap chef shares. “She would have to be the one… my mom or my daughter.”

Bronson’s 9-year-old daughter could also find her way on her daddy’s track. According to the “730” rhymer, his child is quite the rapper and singer. “[She] can recite every line from “Easy Rider” and that is not an easy song to do. She raps all of Nicki Minaj and everything, she’s dope. She has my musical ear for sure. She sings and she’s beautiful. It’s very powerful.”

Girls run the world so that’s no surprise.
