OutKast Gives Better Performance Second Time Around at Coachella 2014

OutKast recovered in a major way with their triumphant performance during their second week at Coachella music festival on Friday (April 18). The duo’s first weekend left negative reactions among critics and fans who watch their set. However, this time around, ‘Kast appeared to have redeemed themselves with a much tighter show.

According to Los Angeles Times, Andre 3000 and Big Boi rearranged their set list by performing their sure-fire hits midway to pump up the crowd, trimmed their solo sets and eliminated songs that didn’t move the crowd last week.

One huge noticeable change was Three Stacks’ outfit. The 38-year-old rapper traded his farmer overalls last week for a black-and-white jumpsuit with a gigantic tag that read “For Sale” on one side and “Sold Out” on the other. He also donned a blonde wig.

Andre 3000 seemed more energetic onstage than last week, while Big Boi had no problem commanding the crowd’s attention.

The only guest appearance during their 90-minute show was Killer Mike for a rendition of ‘The Whole World,’ which was cut last week because the pair went past their curfew.

Reactions to OutKast’s performance the second time around was overwhelmingly positive. Read some of the tweets below.

During the game it was Drake who chimed in with jokes about the rapper. The "Worst Behavior" rapper joined Toronto Sports Network to provide commentary for the game. "It's an ironic match-up," the rapper says.

Prince Releases New Song 'The Breakdown'

Prince The BreakdownNPG Records Hours after securing a new pact with Warner Bros. Records, Prince released a brand new song called ‘The Breakdown.’ The orchestral funk ballad is the first piece of music to appear under his new deal with his former label after an 18-year hiatus.

Over stirring violins strings, keyboards and guitars, Prince sings about “the saddest story ever been told.”

In one verse, the Purple One denounces his former partying self and opts for a sober path in life.

“I used to throw the party at New Year’s Eve / First one intoxicated, last one to leave / Waking up in places that you would never believe / Give me back the time, you can keep the memories,” he sings.

According to Dr. Funkenberry, Prince first performed this song at a Minneapolis gig in early 2013 and occasionally plays it with his band 3rd Eye Girl.

‘The Breakdown’ does sound like it was recorded in the ’90s (post-’Purple Rain’) but still has a contemporary feel to it. Prince’s airy falsetto is stronger than ever and anchors the pleasant ballad.

As part of Prince’s new deal with Warner Bros., the R&B/Soul icon will regain ownership of his master recordings, something he’s been trying to reclaim for years. In addition, his classic 1984 album ‘Purple Rain’ will be remastered and reissued to coincide with the 30th anniversary in June. The collection will reportedly feature “long-awaited previously unheard music,” but it’s unclear of what that material would be.

You can purchase Prince’s song ‘The Breakdown’ on iTunes right now.

"The freestyle that wasn't very good on my show is gonna have to be 2 Chainz," he said. "Honestly I think I caught him off guard. I think he didn't expect me to ask him to do it because I've heard him on shows freestyling before, so I knew he could handle it and I think that day he couldn't handle it."

T.D.E. CEO Responds To Suge Knight Over K.Dot's Label Deal (@TopDawgEnt @sugeknight)

Over the past few weeks, Suge Knight has voiced his opinions about the record deals of popular West Coast rappers Kendrick Lamar and Game.

After an interview with BET this week, Knight clarified his claims and states that Interscope records receives revenue from Kendrick Lamar.

"Not only do these companies get the royalties and the publishing, if [the artist] do a show and $100,000 come in, the manager gets 20 percent, now it's $80,000," he said. "Kendrick gets half, the record company gets half, which is ridiculous."

T.D.E. CEO Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith fired back at Knight's claims via Twitter on Wednesday (April 16) offering his label for a dollar if Knight can provide proof from his claims.

"TELL SUGE I SAID IF HE KAN SHOW ME 1 CHECK WE PAID 2 INTERSCOPE OFF OF R TOUING..ILL SELL HIM TDE 4 $1, NOBODY GETS SHIT OFF OUR TOURS. #TOP" he tweeted.

Suge also added in his interview that rappers like Game and K.Dot get sketchy deals regardless of their influence in the community.

"[All I was saying was] it's not fair for two n****s from Compton to be gettin' f****d, and it's not good for me to have knowledge and not pass it on to them," he said. "It wasn't about putting them as men down or as artists down, it was about putting the person who's in control down, saying 'How are you f****ng over these dudes from Compton when they're making a difference for your company?"'

20 Hip-Hop Personalities Share Memories of Nas' 'Illmatic [EXCLUSIVE]

Favorite Memory Involving 'Illmatic':

"I was a freshman in high school, and my boys I was running with, they were much older, I was running with a bunch of seniors. So, one of my best friends had come to pick me up from school, 'cause I had been talking to this girl on the phone for a couple days and needed a ride to get to her house. On the way over there, he had 'Illmatic' playing in the tape deck. If I remember correctly, he had 'It Ain't Hard to Tell' playing and that was one of my first times hearing it. So I was like 'Who is this n---- rapping over Michael Jackson?' And he was like 'Yo, this Nas.' And understand, I was like the biggest Micheal Jackson fan ever as a kid, so, to hear somebody rhyming over 'Human Nature,' at first it hurt me like, 'F---, I didn't get to do that, like, he beat me to it.' But, riding in the car, listening to that, and I just remember saying 'Aww s---, this s--- is dope as f---.'

I don't know if I liked the song that much because I knew I was about to get the girl as well, if that sweetened it. So, I got to the girl house and after that, she was my girlfriend. Well, at least for a couple weeks. But it was cool while it lasted."

Favorite Song From the Album:

"If you had me at gunpoint, I'd probably say 'Represent.' It's a favorite for me because it has all the elements that are not supposed to work. Like, the sounds that Premo used, it almost sounds like some Christmas carol s---. So, that's just not supposed to work in the hip-hop context. Two, there's no real hook other than his boy shouting 'represent.' Having your friends in the booth can go really good or really bad. And most of the time, it goes really bad. So, that was just a record where it was not supposed to work. If you was to just say on paper Premo gonna chop up this Christmas sounding s--- and I'm just gonna round up all the n----s in Queensbridge I can find and have them scream 'represent' and that's gonna be the joint. So, the fact that he was able to take those two things and actually make it work, I just thought that was genius.

I'm also a big stickler for the next to last song on a album being fire. Because it almost has to give you a bittersweet feeling that the album is about to be over. So, 'Represent' comes and kills s--- and then 'It Ain't Hard to Tell' is like the encore."

Favorite Beat From the Album:

"Let me think hard about this. Favorite beat, probably 'Memory Lane.' Again, for me it has a lot to do with placement. Being the age I was when 'Illmatic' came out, I listened to it on tape. So, a big experience with tape [back then] is your first song that kicks off side two has got to be the jam. Because it's almost like your starting a new chapter of your book. Another one of my favorites, just as a sidebar, the only other rapper that I can hear that kinda did that, around that era, was 'Street Struck' by Big L. It had that same kind of feel, it was a melodic track, but it also had a sense of eeriness to it as well. Memory Lane has a sense of nostalgia and it's like you have a sense of nostalgia of a person that it's reflecting. For lack of a better word, it's a pretty track, but he's spitting some good ass s--- over it. It was just something for me that I just really liked that beat and it was one of my favorite beats of that time."

If You Could've Added a Guest Verse to Any Track on the Album, Which One Would It Have Been?

"I don't know [laughs]. I'm listening to the album trying to think about what Nas song I would take Nas off of, and that's some pretty f---ed up s--- to think. Like that's some hard s---, like, what song or verse from 'Illmatic' I would take Nas off of. But if I could add a verse to any song, I would probably say 'Life's a Bitch.' At the time [of the album's release], I was 15 and that was the time that as much as my mother didn't want to hear anything hip-hop, it was just noise, for her to hear me over Gap Band's 'Yearning For Your Love,' that would've earned me a lot of points. That actually would have got me plays at our family reunion [laughs]. If I'm rapping over Charlie Wilson at 15, that would've been a go. So, I would pick that one because of the track and the subject matter.

Plus, I like the fact that 'Illmatic' only had one guest appearance on it, so, if I would have two guest appearances on the album, I would have them on the same song, so ain't nobody else coming in and getting in the way of Nas' verse. Like, lets get y'all two n----s on this one jam together, and then this s--- over. It's back to Nas again."

After a Michigan woman killed her boyfriend and showed no remorse, a judge decided to give her a piece of his mind.

"You gutted him like a fish... you were relentless," he said. "You stabbed. You stabbed. You stabbed. You stabbed. You stabbed until he was dead..I agree with the family, I hope you die in prison as well."

Gamet will serve life in prison without parole.

The Mysterious Brothers Unique

Here's another single from Sutra. This one goes even further back: 1981. Musicians and brothers Dave and Dennis Williams linked up with a little crew of MCs known as the Brothers Unique, and this is their sole record: "School Daze." It was originally released on Glad-Hamp Records, a label owned by jazz legend Lionel Hampton (Benny Goodman, etc - look 'im up). It's one of the few records they put out that wasn't one of Hampton's, and certainly their only hip-hop release. Sutra then picked it up for a wide release.

It's an electric (though not electro, mind you) disco rap that really captures the energy of disco more than a lot of its peers which wound up sounding like sappy, watered down disco that only really set itself apart by featuring rappers on it. It's got a great prototypical shout chorus, and the Brothers' way of trading verses back and forth with different styles and even doing voices keeps things lively and danceable. Very few records of this period pack this much bounce.

The downside is that it features the corniest rhymes you'll ever hear outside of an After School Special. And their cheerful voices sound like they're auditioning for a PBS childrens' program. I don't get why they chose to spell "Daze" with a "ze" here, because this is practically a propaganda piece in the way it fervently sings the praises of education. The guys who write Sesame Street songs would rolls their eyes and call this preachy.

But hey, education's a genuinely good cause; it's not like they're putting the military industrial complex on a pedestal. And the Brothers, Mighty D, Mack Attack, The Ice Man, and Romeo, the teen of the crew, manage to have enough fun with it - not just by making a catchy tune like I've just described, but by always changing their lyrical approach. one verse they're warning you about the dangers of winding up homeless, and the next they're doing a playful "big word style" to flex their own educations, "What ladies can you hope to please if you can't even say your ABC's? You gotta dazzle them with phraseology, and social ideology. And then I ease into sexology; and then, good God, another victory!" If only the bulk of the song had managed to shake its didactic nature like that.

Here's the thing about this Sutra release, though. It's different. It's the same music and starts out the same way. But it's actually a shorter edit (5+ minutes as opposed to 8+ on the original Glad-Hamp release). You actually have to be pretty familiar with the song to catch where they cut the three minutes from, because they clip short snippets throughout. For example, between the first and second verses, there's a little hook and mini-rhyme, and then they're back in sync.

So fuck the Sutra version, right? The Glad-Hamp version is the one to own, surely. And, yes, I'd definitely say the original, full-length version is the preferable and definitive version of the vocal mix of the song. Maybe the song will be too corny for you to get into, or maybe you'll love it; but one thing you won't be saying to yourself as you hear it is "this would be so much better if they took three minutes out of it!" Especially since, again thanks to they're very differently written verses, it never feels redundant. In fact, the shorter version fades out during one of the coolest parts of the song!

But.

The Sutra record has something special going for it on side B. If you look at the photo, you'll see my 12" is a promo copy (and written on). But it doesn't matter, the promo and retail copies are the same;

If you weren't hip to the Brothers' jazz connection through the whole Glad-Hamp connection, you'd pick on it once you flipped this record over. Both of these records have the Instrumental version on the the reverse, but you'll notice the writing credits on the Sutra version have an extra name added: John Stubblefield. Stubblefield is an old school jazz saxophonist, and on the Sutra record, they give him the instrumental to play over. It's back to about 8 minutes in length and and now it's a rocking jazz disco groove. One or two other rappers have done something similar with their B-sides (Mix Master Spade comes to mind), but I believe the Brothers Unique were the first. What's more, this is easily one of the best examples. In fact, a lot of listeners who can't get past the cheese factor of the vocal side might find this to be the preferable, definitive version of the song and the one to own. It's a call you can only make for yourself... Or, you know, just break down and get both.

Anyway, the Williams brothers continued to have long careers in the music business; but I wonder whatever happened to the Brothers Unique. I sometimes wonder if they were just jazz guys using aliases for this one record, having fun with this new rap fad; but they seemed to have rapping pretty well figured out for a couple of outsiders just jumping into it. And I know there's an old soul group called the Brothers Unique, but I assume there's no connection short of one being the namesake of the other. I'd love to know these guys' story, let alone hear another song or two from 'em. Maybe even one that isn't about school.

Tony Yayo Fires Back at 50 Cent: I Took Bullets for G-Unit (@50cent, @tonyyayo)

50 Cent recently hit up NYC's The Breakfast Club to talk in depth about new music, family and the recent tension between himself and former G-Unit allies, Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks. Both artists had big hits and equally impressive sales early in their careers, but have since fallen off the radar. 50 obviously noticed the two rappers lose fans' attention, and said in regards to Yayo:

"Some people are like milk...they have an expiration date."

Many Hip-Hop fans were taken aback by the comment, feeling that 50 and Yayo's friendship went back much further than the music, and that such a comment would've been better kept in close circles.

Yayo took to Twitter to express his disappointment in 50's comment, saying he took bullets for the crew and was a major part in building its brand.
