Damon Dash Praises Kanye West's Bravery at 2015 BET Honors [VIDEO]

When the hip-hop community learned Kanye West would be among the awards recipients at the 2015 BET Honors, no one thought Damon Dash would be the one to present him with the trophy for the Visionary Award. But there the legendary mogul was, in the flesh and speaking kind words about his former protege.

Bringing his daughter along with him onstage, he was classic Dame Dash, cracking witty jokes and being his usual confident self. But the notoriously brash Roc-A-Fella co-founder was extremely gracious in his praise of Yeezy. “It’s always been his courage, he’s always been brave,” Dame said of West. He went on to say that the rapper was done in his book when he learned he had a serious car crash, reminiscing on West’s determination to emerge from the situation on top.

Dame also joked about Kanye’s success being weird considering he helped the MC get to where he is today but is no longer receiving any money with him as a result. The only thing missing from this moment was Jay Z. We can’t always get exactly what we want, but this unexpected reunion will do.

Kanye West Touches on Racism, Personal Expression in Acceptance Speech at 2015 BET Honors [VIDEO]

Kanye West was honored with the Visionary Award for his innovation as an artist and forward thinking in all aspects of his creativity at the 2015 BET Honors.

Before he hit the stage to accept the honor, a video of his various friends and peer professionals played onscreen, each paying tribute to West. Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar and Common wax poetic about the greatness that is Yeezus. Common describes Ye’s attention to detail and quality. “If he goes into an art form, he’s gonna be great about it,” he said, noting that the company he keeps reflects in his artistry and way of doing things.

His cohort in crafting Watch the Throne, Jay Z feels West is highly regarded as an artist because “he has this belief in what he’s saying,” while his wife, Kim Kardashian, believes he “thinks about things a couple of years before they catch on” and is always looking to innovate and push the envelope. Lamar says the magic of Mr. West is that “whether it’s an artist or being a human being, there’s no limits,” but Jay Z hit the nail on the head when he also stated, “He’s constantly taking thoughts and concepts that are now that haven’t been seen yet, taking them from the future and bringing them to now.”

West then graced the stage to accept his award. “Well, seeing how for the first time of the life it feels to be humbled,” he said, which the crowd found amusing. He went on to thank Stephen Hill, BET’s Head of Programming; and his hometown of Chicago. His visit with Minister Louis Farrakhan and their conversation about dating a woman not of color was also part of his speech, as was the “barbershop mentality” on dating as a rich, black man.

The rapper also shared a story of Kim’s father, the late attorney Rob Kardashian. West described her dad’s experience with racism when someone wrote the words “n—– lover” on the side of his Bentley because he supported O.J. Simpson in his legal defense during his infamous murder trial.

Many missed the deeper meaning in his statements over the last year, West stated. His words were rooted in a deeper need to represent ownership rather than just “playing in the league.” Capitalism and becoming slaves to materials and ideas were all part of the conversation. But out of all of the quotables in his speech, the one that stood out the most was when West stated that “[as black people] our oil is our expression, it’s our influence, don’t ever let them take that away.” Powerful words, Mr. West.

A$AP Rocky Drops 'Indie' Featuring Rich Homie Quan and Sway Burr

A$AP RockyKevin Winter, Getty Images

Even though A$AP Rocky‘s next album, A.L.L.A., has no release date yet, he’s doing a good job of keeping his buzz going strong by delivering new songs. After dropping the video for “Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2,” he’s back with a muddy-sounding banger, “Indie,” featuring Rich Homie Quan and Sway Burr.

At this time, though, there’s no telling if its an official song off the new album or just a leak since it sounds a bit incomplete. That doesn’t take away from the overall song’s appeal. Thank Rocky’s tighter, more improved flow for that.

“Hand it all, let them die, Anna Rose, big guy / That Santa Clause, big body, that Phantom Rolls, too hot / N—- fan him off, Tupac, bandanna on, bandanna off / Stand on my two feet and use my penis as my third leg,” he raps.

The under-the-radar rapper Sway Burr puts his lyrical two cents in as well, and spits a slowed-down verse, which contrasts nicely with the uptempo beat.

“All I really wanted was a G-O-L-D, two old flags on me, talking way back in ’03 / Now you trying to crucify me, now you trying to crucify me / Yall know how I get with the snakes out here throwing up B.P.T,” he spits.

Quan adds his deep, raspy voice to the track, rapping about a girl who provides sexual favors for him, then following it up with a bit of singing.

Hopefully, the A$AP Mob member will provide some details about A.L.L.A. soon because from what we’ve heard so far, the project is shaping up to be one of the more solid efforts of 2015.

Don C x Air Jordan 1

eBay

While Kanye West has been loudly promoting his Adidas collaboration, his homie Don C has been quietly amassing an amazing collection with Nike. This time, Don is putting his spin on the Air Jordan 1 for a cause that is much bigger than personal gain.

The limited edition Don C x Air Jordan 1 is a stark white take on the silhouette that employs the same graphic print as Nike’s BHM collection, only this time it’s more of a texture than a simple pattern. With black trim and golden accents, these feel as rich as the actual black history itself.

The Don C x Air Jordan 1 release is up for auction now on eBay and will run through Feb. 28. All proceeds will go to benefit the Ever Higher Fund, which is an organization designed to “unlock the potential of underserved youth by supporting charitable initiatives that leverage the power of sport.”
