10 Music Milestones From Great Black Artists
Harvard historian and activist Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to preserving and documenting the achievements of black Americans, in 1915.
The celebration of black excellence evolved into the ASNLH creating Negro History Week in 1926, which would by 1976 turn into a full month in which every U.S. president there after designated the month of February as Black History Month.
African Americans have been excelling in all areas from sports to music to entertainment and politics, among others, since the beginning of time. With respect to the music industry, black artists showed the world that music has no color. Decades prior to the Civil Rights movement in the ’60s, and when segregation and racism dominated American culture in 1935, contralto opera singer Marian Anderson was the first black singer to be invited to sing at the White House.
Two decades later in 1956, when blacks were rarely seen on television starring in acting roles let alone hosting, jazz pianist and singer Nat King Cole became the first African American to host a TV series with The Nat King Cole Show, which featured other black performers including Count Basie and Sammy Davis Jr.
Today, African-American artists continue to break barriers and define new lines of hierarchy and excellence. Just think, without Ella Fitzgerald, the first African American to win a Grammy Award, it may not have been possible for Beyonce to win 20 of those prestigious awards. In honor of Black History Month, peep our gallery for a look at other monumental moments in 10 Music Milestones From Great Black Artists.

Giuliana Rancic Apologizes to Zendaya for Offensive Dreadlocks Comment [VIDEO]
Giuliana Rancic felt major backlash this week after she made comments about Zendaya Coleman’s dreadlocks at the 2015 Oscars. So much so that Rancic issued a video apology to the singer.
The E! Fashion Police cast member admitted that she “crossed the line” with the rude remarks in which she said the Disney Channel star’s hair probably “smells like patchouli oil” or “weed.”
“I just want everyone to know, I didn’t intend to hurt anybody. But I’ve learned it’s not my intent that matters, it’s the result, and the result is that people are offended, including Zendaya, and that is not okay,” she said. “Therefore, I want to say to Zendaya, and anyone else out there that I have hurt, that I am so, so sincerely sorry. This really has been a learning experience for me.”
Rancic’s apology might be too little, too late. The 40-year-old television personality was “dragged” on Twitter over her comments. Even famous celebrities like Selma director Ava DuVernay, actress Kerry Washington and reality TV star Khloe Kardashian also came to Zendaya’s defense.
Fashion Police co-star Kelly Osbourne even felt offended and threatened to leave the show if Rancic didn’t apologize. Many saw Osbourne’s tweet as fake outrage since she didn’t say anything on the show when Rancic made the initial remark.
On Wednesday (Feb. 25), Zendaya accepted Rancic’s apology in a missive on her Instagram account.
“Giuliana, I appreciate your apology and I’m glad it was a learning experience for you and for the network,” she wrote. “I hope that others negatively affected by her words can also find it in their hearts to accept her apology as well.”

Watch Busta Rhymes' Son Rap Over Rae Sremmurd's 'No Type' [VIDEO]
There’s an old saying that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. In the case of Busta Rhymes’ family tree, he has one son who is ready to shine in the game.
Bussa-Buss introduces his 14-year-old son to the world with a video of him busting rhymes (puns intended) over Rae Sremmurd’s “No Type.” Trillian, who is the youngest son of the veteran rapper’s three boys, is a dynamo that has the same charismatic energy as his father.
The young rhymer appears comfortable in his swag as he boasts about being the youngest in charge. “I’mma shake y’all up with fright (turn up) / Shake y’all up with fright / But these dudes they never ready / Pass the torch because it’s my light,” he raps.
Throughout the video, Trillian and his dad are having fun turning it up in New York’s Times Square. The father-and-son duo are even wearing the same clothes including all-white parka coats, matching Air Jordans and gold jewelry. Like father, like son.
Overall, the video is in good fun and Trillian seems ready to rock the mic. We weren’t expecting him to “roar, roar like a dungeon dragon” like his father, but his rapping skills are not bad. However, it would be interesting to see how Trillian performs with original music.
What do you think of Busta Rhymes’ 14-year-old son’s rapping skills? Tell us in the comments below.

Chris Brown Denied Entry Into Canada for Tour, Fans Blame Drake
After a few delays, Chris Brown and Trey Songz’s Between the Sheets tour finally kicked off last week. But the trek hit a snag recently when Breezy had to cancel tour dates in Canada because the country denied him entry.
Brown went on Twitter to give his Canadian fans the disappointing news. “The good people of the Canadian government wouldn’t allow me entry. I’ll be back this summer and will hopefully see all my Canadian fans!” he tweeted before deleting his tweets, which Rap-Up grabbed. “Unfortunately I will not be able to perform in front of sold out crowds in Montreal & Toronto.”
CBC News also confirmed that Brown was denied entry into Canada because of “immigration issues.” These issues are most likely due to the singer’s ongoing probation and past arrests.
Unfortunately, his touring buddy Trey Songz was already in Canada when he heard the bad news and expressed his frustration over the cancellation.
Meanwhile, fans on Twitter are blaming Toronto rapper Drake for the Brown’s situation. The conspiracy theorists believe that after Drizzy dissed Brown at his Auckland concert earlier this week, he took it a step further and used his power to stop the “New Flame” singer from touring his country.

10 Alternative Career Choices Your Favorite Rappers Could Make
Hip-hop loves side hustles. Whether it’s designing a fashion line or red-hot sneaker like Kanye West, managing big league sports and music stars like Jay Z at Roc Nation, hydrating the masses with electrolytes like 50 Cent, peddling premium Ciroc vodka and running an entire television network like Diddy, or following Ice Cube, Eve and Will Smith’s footsteps into the world of acting, rappers are always looking for new ways to expand their audiences and resumes, and in the process, make some serious cash.
Some rappers like LL Cool J, Queen Latifah and Ice T are so nice with their moonlighting gigs that we have all but forgotten that they were rappers from the start. Changing careers can be challenging. For every savvy business move, like Dr. Dre creating his billion-dollar Beats by Dre empire or Snoop Dogg coaching a successful kids’ football team, there are rappers who took the wrong career turn.
Think of the countless artists who have unsuccessfully tried to expand inorganically by running record labels only for their releases to go double wood, degrading themselves for the wrong reality television show role or selling tacky clothes that currently collect dust on discount store racks. There are so many options available for rappers and one misfire can be detrimental not just to an artist’s side income, but more importantly, to his or her main hustle too.
The Boombox is here to help. We play guidance counselor for some of your favorite MCs to assist them with the perfect career choice if they decide to hang up the mic. From Nicki Minaj to Drake to Rick Ross, check out 10 Alternative Career Choices Your Favorite Rappers Could Make.
