Kendrick Lamar "Not Following Trends" on Sophomore Album (@kendricklamar)

Compton's Kendrick Lamar has remained pretty tight-lipped about his sophomore album, not yet revealing any features or song titles. However, in a recent interview with Houston radio personality Devi Dev, Lamar says one thing he's already sure of is that he's not into following trends and plans on making his second major label release using the same instincts that marked his debut album a classic out of the gate.

Lamar also says he knows many considered "GKMC" a great body of work, but he isn't relying on his past accomplishments to carry him over. He's ready to move forward and continue to make great, new music for fans to enjoy.

Chris Brown May Strike a Plea Deal in Washington D.C. Assault Case

Chris BrownJason Merritt, Getty Images

Chris Brown may be getting some good news. The singer is reportedly in talks with prosecutors over a plea deal for his Washington, D.C., assault case.

According to The Washington Post, the singer is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow (June 25) for a hearing. If both sides agree to the terms of the plea deal, Brown could accept what’s being proposed. Anonymous sources told the newspaper that attorneys hope that the deal can be completed as early as July 1.

If no plea deal occurs, the ‘Loyal’ crooner could go to trial.

Breezy was arrested last year for allegedly assaulting a man outside of a hotel in Washington D.C., which violated his earlier probation. He was taken into custody on felony assault charges.

Before being released earlier this month, he was incarcerated since March after a judge sentenced him to 131 days in jail for breaking the rules at a rehab facility. Initially, Brown was sentenced to a year in jail. However, he received credit for 116 days he spent in rehab and another 59 days he spent in custody in May for violating his probation, stemming from his 2009 assault case against ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

Once he left jail, the ‘X’ creator celebrated his release with a huge party in Los Angeles.

Twitter Kills Luis Suárez for Biting Player "Mike Tyson" Style (@miketyson)

Back in 1997, two heavyweight boxing giants stepped into the ring for a second time to prove who was the better man with the hands. This rematch of Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield definitely went down in history, not only for the monumental match-up, but because of Tyson's bizarre choice to bite a piece of Holyfield's ear off, a moment still considered to be one of the most scandalous in sports history.

Fast forward 17 years and the World Cup match up between Uruguay vs. Italy has many fans going through deja vu, as Uruguay's Luis Suárez is accused of biting Italian player Giorgio Chiellini's shoulder.

Odd enough, this is Suárez's third time in the last four years that he's been accused of biting the opposition.

With that kind of footage for the world to see, it's obvious Twitter would run with it and create some pretty hilarious memes and comments connecting Suárez and Tyson as "biting brothers."

Rita Ora Covers Flare Magazine

Rita OraFlare

Rita Ora is no stranger to striking a pose. From Donna Karan to Terry Richardson, she loves being in front of the camera. So when Flare Magazine asked her to be July’s cover model, she was ready.

Modeling a denim jacket with studs on it, Rita gives an alluring look straight towards the camera. While she’s hardly showing skin on the cover, her photo spread in the magazine proves that the ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ singer isn’t afraid to show off her assets. She dons a bikini with a kimono cover up in one photo and the same denim jacket she wears on the cover with nothing on underneath in another. Rita is hardly shy.

Like her on-camera persona, the songstress is also pretty candid. The interview reveals her feelings about working with Prince, who she said rifled through her worn out songwriting notebook. “People like Prince don’t have to care about anything, but they care because they want music for the future to be great,” she tells the magazine. “It makes me feel like, Jesus f—ing Christ! They think I can do it! It makes me proud to have a voice.”

She also talks about her obsession with Instagram. “I’m on it as soon as I wake up,” she admitted. “I scroll with one eye open. It’s like a drug.”

R. Kelly Addresses News About Transgender Son [VIDEO]

R. Kelly has so far been mum about his 13-year-old child, Jaya Kelly, who recently announced that he’s transgender. On his Instagram bio, “Jay” — as he is affectionately called — refers to himself as “transguy.”

Although Jay’s mother, Drea Kelly, has accepted his new identity, Kelly is reportedly unaware of his transition.

In an interview with WCGI’s “The Morning Riot’ crew, the Chicago-bred singer addressed the news of Jaya coming out as transgender… sort of.

“Well, you don’t really want to open this up with saying my daughter is becoming my son,” he warned host Nina Chantele who asked the question about his son.

When Chantele explained that she was asking questions about what she read on the blogs, Kels responded by telling her to not believe in everything she reads.

“I know, but don’t even give the blogs that kind of credit,” he said. “But as far as that’s concerned, always believe what you see — with your own eyes that is. That’s the best way to go about this business I’ve heard a lot of things about a lot of people and it was never true.”

The Grammy-winning singer-producer sort of half-answered the question again by talking about his finances.

“You save money so your kids can go to college — no matter what they are or who they are. They’re still your kids, you gotta support them,” he stated.

When Chantele continued to press further about his transgender son, R. Kelly quickly ended the conversation by not talking about it.

“I don’t address that though. That’s the thing,” he said. “Why do you think I’ve been here for 27 years and still relevant? Because I don’t address s— that’s dumb. I don’t do it. I just don’t do it.”

So there you have it. It looks as if R. Kelly won’t be addressing his family matters to the media anytime soon.

Angie Martinez Opens Up About New Radio Gig With 'The Breakfast Club' [VIDEO]

It’s all about moving her career to the next level and being in different markets. That’s what radio personality Angie Martinez said about leaving New York’s Hot 97 for rival station Power 105. In an interview on Power’s morning show ‘The Breakfast Club’, the 43-year-old radio jock said the move was business, not personal.

“It’s business and people leave jobs all the time,” she said. “I’m not disloyal at all. I have always been extremely loyal. I put, I don’t know how many years of my life down for that company. Even the highest of higher ups [weren't that loyal], which is when I went to make the phone call, when I decided to take this amazing offer that I got. They said, ‘You’ve served this company so well, so many years. I can do nothing but wish you well.’”

The move was really about starting a whole new chapter in her life, she added.

“It was time for me to grow and do new things,” explained the legendary radio host. “I want to be on in different cities. I want to be able to grow. I want to be able to have new challenges, see new things. I want to learn this studio, how this studio works.”

Martinez also said that she didn’t dislike anyone at Power 105, despite there being such a heated rivalry. “I never really subscribed to, because somebody works somewhere else we have to be enemies.”

Her resignation from Hot 97 is the center of a new interview in Billboard.

“I tried to really look at what’s best for my career, what’s best for my life, what’s best for my family, for me,” she said. “I had to take my emotion out of it. It was a decision that I felt was right for me.”

The new radio gig at Power 105 allows Martinez to communicate with audiences outside of New York City, as the Clear Channel-owned station is broadcast in other major markets like Miami. “The thing is about the move, it’s not just going down the dial,” she explained. “It’s about joining a team and a company that really offers me all kinds of growth potential.”

Basically, Martinez felt she was beneath a glass ceiling at her old job and she needed to break it. The New York native also said she’s been trying to stay away from all of the hoopla surrounding her recent move.

“People keep texting me like this is such a big deal and keep forwarding me links to things,” stated Martinez. “I’ve really tried to keep a quiet mind about it. I’m trying not to read too much of the comments on social media or too much stuff about it in general. It’s emotional enough for me, and I just want to look forward and not get too wrapped up in the noise.”

R. Kelly Speaks on Transgender Child for the First Time (@rkelly)

R. Kelly sat down with Chicago radio station WGCI where he briefly addressed his child Jaya's transition from female to male, as well as rumors that he lost one of his homes in Chicago due to financial troubles.

When it comes to Jaya (who claims Kelly hasn't spoken to him about his transition since the news went public), Kelly says it's important to believe what we see with our own eyes and not go on rumors that may or may not be true, and to also be aware that there is a backstory we don't know of that should prevent the public from judging his family.

As far as his home, he says he didn't lose it, but gave it up because he's a single man now and simply didn't need that much space for himself.

Here it all from the man himself above.

Ab-Soul vs. Troy Ave — The Boombox Battle

Ab-Soul Troy AveThe Boombox

The numbers are in, and it looks like the West Coast has taken the win in last week’s The Boombox Battle. With 67.15 percent of the vote, Ab-Soul‘s ‘Hunnid Stax’ was victorious over A$AP Mob, who only walked away with 32.85 percent of the fan vote.

Ab-Soul’s ‘Hunnid Stax’ is off his new LP, ‘These Days…,’ out today (June 24). The rapper and fellow TDE member Schoolboy Q rhyme about hustling and making as much money as possible. Kenny Beats provides the rhythm as the two hip-hop artists show off their distinct rapping styles — Ab-Soul’s staccatto approach against Schoolboy’s laid-back flow.

“Who gettin’ that dough / Who gettin’ that cake / Who gettin’ that bread / Put a ticket in your head if you can’t relate / Who gettin’ that fatty / Who gettin’ that change,” Ab-Soul spits at the top of track.

Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q’s competition this week is Troy Ave‘s ‘Your Style’ Remix. Featuring the talents of Puff Daddy, Ma$e and T.I., the track sounds like a throwback to the old days of hip-hop with the R&B layers in the melody. While he doesn’t come in at the top of the list of best rappers who sing, Troy’s attempt on this song is kind of endearing and gets you moving to the beat.

“Now all you hear is New York this, New York that / Let’s keep it real motherf—ers I brought New York back,” he delivers. “Troy Ave got the streets in a frenzy though / I brought the spotlight back you should thank me, no?”

Who will take The Boombox Battle crown this week? Will Ab-Soul’s money-making track keep fans interested and voting? Or will Troy Ave’s chilled out and fun song take the votes? You’ll be able to vote for your favorite once per hour until the polls shut down on Tues., July 1, at 10AM ET.

Trick Trick Blocked Rick Ross From Performing in Detroit, Manager Confirms

Trick TrickYouTube

After much speculation, it’s been confirmed that rapper Trick Trick was the leader behind the human blockade that stopped Rick Ross from performing at Hot 107.5 FM’s annual Summer Jamz event in Detroit last Saturday (June 21).

The rapper’s manager, Arthur Alston, confirmed to MLive that it was his client, along with his Goon Squad, who prevented Rozay from entering the Chene Park venue.

Reps for the Right Productions, who book shows at Chene Park, issued a statement about the negative incident but didn’t mention Trick Trick by name.

“It was Trick Trick,” Alston wrote in an e-mail. “They (Chene Park) may not want to say his name or don’t know.”

The manager then directed MLive to the lyrics from Trick Trick’s song ‘No Fly Zone’ featuring Royce da 5’9″.

For those who don’t know, “No Fly Zone” means that that any rapper who doesn’t collaborate with Detroit artists or pays a tithe to the city are not invited to perform. Trick Trick allegedly has enforced this rule on a number of rappers prior to Ross’ visit to Detroit.

Meanwhile, the Maybach Music Group leader recently talked about the incident to TMZ. Rozay told the gossip website that no one confronted him at the venue. He also scoffed at the reports that the unruly mob made him fear for his life.

The Miami rapper, however, did feel bad for the fans who waited six hours to see him perform, only to go home disappointed.

“Somebody is deceiving the people of Detroit like Kwame Kilpatrick did,” said Ross.

Exclusive! Jarren Benton on Racism in Hip-Hop, Justin Bieber (@JarrenBenton)

Funk Volume artist Jarren Benton spoke to VladTV about labelmate Hopsin calling Brand Nubian member Lord Jamar racist for his comments on white people within Hip-Hop culture.

Benton says that while he welcomes everyone into the house of Hip-Hop, he didn't feel that what Jamar said was racist, and points out that Hip-Hop, while accepted by the masses today, started as a black art form. He also notes that many black art forms have been re-vamped by other cultures and African-Americans don't get their proper due for its creation.

Benton then spoke on Justin Bieber's recent racist remarks, remarking that while it's no excuse, he understands Bieber was young. He also shared that as a lifelong Southerner, he wasn't surprised by Donald Sterling's racist comments, saying he almost expects it from someone like him. Bieber, on the other hand, is a different story.

Jhene Aiko Reveals First Taste of New Album With 'To Love and Die'

Jhene AikoJhene Aiko

Jhene Aiko has been working her way through the festival circuit these last few months. But even though we’re still relishing the sounds of her chart-topping EP, ‘Sail Out,’ fans are eager to get new material out of the petite R&B singer. Looks like the wait is over as she’s just dropped ‘To Love and Die.’

Teaming up with Chicago hip-hop collective Cocaine 80s, the track follows the same vibe and vein as the music on her EP. However, it’s less of the bad relationship stuff featured on the ‘The Worst’ and more of a proclamation of happy love and devotion. The fluid melody takes us to the tranquil waters of the beach — something that’s been a bit of a signature for the songstress.

“’Cause where I’m from / We live for the love / Die for the love / I live for your love / I die for your love / Love,” she sings.

Jhene’s debut LP, ‘Souled Out,’ is set to release this summer and will feature a duet with her daughter called ‘Promises.’

Q-Tip Talks 'The Last Zulu,' 'Low End Theory' 25th Anniversary on BBC Radio

Q-Tip BBC RadioBBC Radio

The life and music of Q-Tip, aka the Abstract, is explored in a recent discussion on BBC Radio 1. Produced by Benji B, the hour-long documentary features the founding member of A Tribe Called Quest recalling his influential career in hip-hop.

From watching hip-hop cultivate around him in Queens, N.Y., to his work with ATCQ, to his solo career, Q-Tip details his musical journey for the listeners.

Some newsy tidbits in the radio interview include Q-Tip talking about his hip-hop drama series, which is inspired by his days as a Native Tongue, and his oft-delayed album, ‘The Last Zulu.’

“I’m just excited about this next album,” he said. “Some of my biggest inspirations are like Miles Davis, David Bowie. I mentioned those two specifically because they were able to do, like, they worked through eras. Or they had periods, rather…it’s really about just being where I’m at in life and just coming from a different kind of time in a way and existing today.”

“And kinda just trying to find my way through the new languages,” he continues. “And through the new subcultures. And just questions that we all ask ourselves. [It's] almost like ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ or that Beach Boys song, ‘Not Made For These Times’ or something like that. It’s like the evil twin to Tribe in a way.”

Q-Tip also announced that A Tribe Called Quest’s classic 1991 album, ‘The Low End Theory,’ will be re-released this year to commemorate the LP’s 25th Anniversary. The collection will feature some unreleased material from the recording sessions, including a song called ‘Silence’ featuring Leaders of the New School. Exclusive! Dame Dash: I'm Not Mad at Funk Flex, Beef Is Off (@dashdamon @funkmasterflex)

Business mogul Dame Dash sat down with VladTV to share his view of labels pushing artists to pursue 360 deals, saying that there is something inherently wrong with telling artists to "give up their entire behind."

"I've watched them [labels] trick people into thinking that after they've built their foundation and they have their show, and all the exposure is done that they need them to go the next level and have them sell their whole entire behind away. 360 degrees of your ass, pause, just 'cuz of a trick."

He also said that he's no longer mad at Funkmaster Flex and that the "beef" between the two of them is over as far as he's concerned.
