Bruno Mars broke records when his performance during the Super Bowl halftime show earlier this year became the most watched set in the game’s history. And now it looks like the singer may walk away with an Emmy Award for his big moment.
His 2014 Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show was nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program category. This is his first nomination for the award.
The singer’s performance raked in 115.3 million views on Feb. 2, which easily surpassed the 110.8 million viewers that watched Destiny’s Child reunite in 2014. Bruno also beat out Madonna, who was the current record holder up to that point — bringing 114 million to their TV screens in 2012. He also became the youngest artist to be the solo headliner for the halftime show.
While we commend him for the Emmy nod, it looks like Bruno has some stiff competition with ‘Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: President Barack Obama,’ ‘Children’s Hospital,’ ‘Parks And Rec In Europe’ and ‘The Soup: True Detective.’
We will have to wait until next month to find out if he walks away with the golden statue. The Emmy Awards air Aug. 25 on NBC at 8 PM EST.

B.o.B Drops 'No Genre 2′ Mixtape, 'Follow Me' Video
Four years after releasing his first ‘No Genre’ mixtape, B.o.B returns with ‘No Genre 2,’ a 14-track effort that includes features from Ty Dolla $ign, Mike Fresh, Sevyn Streeter and, of course, his Grand Hustle boss T.I., just to name a few.
The rapper also recruited a bunch of different producers, such as Tommy Brown, She’kspere, Sonny Digitial and N4. Bobby Ray produced four tracks as well. Just yesterday (July 10) he released the video for the song ‘Follow Me,’ an electric guitar-driven track, in which the multi-talented artist sings introspective lyrics while he’s hitchhiking through the desert.
Other song titles on ‘No Genre 2′ include ‘Lean On Me,’ ‘Forget,’ ‘The Nation,’ ‘Chosen,’ ‘Drunk AF’ and ‘Swing My Way,’ which B.o.B just released a few days ago.
In an interview with Atlanta radio station Hot 107.9, the ‘Nothing On You,’ lyricist says creating one particular sound or staying true to one particular genre isn’t for him. For this tape, he wanted to work with people he had true chemistry with.
“I’ve always had like genre-bending music, if you will,” B.o.B explained. “And one day somebody told me, they just said ‘Bob, you should just start a label called No Genre.’ And it was right around the time I planned on doing a sequel to this mixtape, so it just all made sense, man. So I really reached out to everybody who I really have a genuine chemistry with.”

Tyga Drops Wiz Khalifa's Under the Influence of Music Tour
In two weeks, Wiz Khalifa will embark on his massive Under the Influence of Music tour but one rapper won’t join him on his trek. YMCMB artist Tyga has dropped out of the lineup for an undisclosed reason.
On Thursday (July 10), Wiz jumped on Twitter to inform his fans of the news, tweeting, “Tyga dropped off the tour. Sorry ya’ll.”
Although the ‘Rack City’ rapper is no longer on the bill, the 22-city jaunt still boasts an impressive list of performers. Rappers Jeezy, Rich Homie Quan, Sage the Gemini, Iamsu! and DJ Drama on the bill as well as R&B singers Mack Wilds and Ty Dolla $ign.
The tour begins on July 24 in Scranton, Pa., and will hit all the major North American cities before wrapping up on Aug. 24 in Irvine, Calif. To cop tickets, head over to Live Nation.
We’re not going to speculate on why Tyga exited Wiz’s tour. However, the rapper has been keeping himself busy this summer.
Tyga is currently working on the ‘Fan of a Fan’ album and can be heard on Kid Ink’s remix for ‘Main Chick‘ and on Migos’ remix of ‘Fight Night.’
Rita Ora Previews Prince Collaboration 'The Single Most Amazing'
Rita Ora is treating fans to a snippet of her collaboration with Prince, ‘The Single Most Amazing.’ The songstress offers a preview of the song in a behind-the-scenes video for Roberto Cavalli’s Autumn/Winter 2015 campaign.
In the clip, the blonde-haired beauty is featured in several glamorous Roberto Cavalli dresses and poses seductively for the camera as the track serves as the soundtrack.
On the bossa nova-influenced tune, which was penned by the Purple One and produced by Josh Welton, Ora tells the story of a woman being mesmerized by a man who has clearly caught her attention.
“She looked up and there he was and now she’s firmly attracted,” she sings over an acoustic guitar riff and lush horns. “She didn’t care how many there were and who / ‘Cause she was fallin’ in love with the single most amazing thing in the room.”
Prince previously spoke about the song with Ora and how he wanted it to drop immediately. “As a celebrity with lots of endorsements, she makes money walking out of the house wearing a certain kind of makeup or sunglasses,” he explained.
Likewise, Ora was honored to work with the esteemed pop icon. “It was the best thing I have ever done in my life,” she said. “He has an answer for everything… he’s a genius.”
No word if the full song will ever get a proper release.
In the meantime, Ora is prepping songs for her second album, which is due out in the fall.

Robin Thicke's 'Paula' Sells Poorly Overseas
Robin Thicke is doing everything he can to show his love for his estranged wife Paula Patton. And his most recent grand gesture, the release of ‘Paula,’ an album created in her honor, really puts his heart on his sleeve. Unfortunately, hardly anyone is appreciating the effort.
‘Paula’ has entered the Official U.K. Chart, selling a dismal 530 copies. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, reports from Australia say that less than 55 units were sold in the country.
In its first week, ‘Paula’ sold 24,000 units in the U.S.. Considering the undeniable success of ‘Blurred Lines’ last year (177,000 units sold when it debuted), this is definitely a low point in Robin’s career. But the singer is going with his heart on this one and is set to reunite with Paula and hopefully get the support of fans along the way.
Prior to these figures, Robin has been on a mission to get his wife back. Videos ‘Get Her Back’ and ‘Still Madly Crazy’ tug at the heart strings as they feature touching moments of the couple’s romance. He also dedicated his ‘Forever Love’ performance at the 2014 BET Awards to her.

J. Cole's Newest Signee Cozz Drops 'Knock the Hustle'
While artists often have to build their own buzz before climbing the ladder in this current Internet-steered system, Cozz‘s come-up has been one of the smoothest of recent memory. The 20-year-old South Central, Calif., native dropped his very first video, ‘Dreams,’ in March, and was unveiled as the latest addition to J. Cole‘s Dreamville roster just three months later.
That’s not to say that the kid doesn’t have the talent to back it up; ‘Dreams’ was a scorching effort which, through pure lyricism rather than a fleeting fad, perked the ears of tastemakers and industry bigwigs alike. On his newly-released song, ‘Knock the Hustle,’ it becomes even more clear that Cozz is intent on paving his way in the game through good old fashioned rhyming.
With its jazzy boom bap beat, the Que-produced loosie is more ’90s New York than 2014 West Coast, not least because of the Jay Z-referencing title. However, Cozz juxtaposes the mellow vibe by firing off more of those ferocious bars of his, which are drenched in hunger, frustration and unshakable hope.
“I been broke, man, for way too long / No hot water for way too long / You can’t knock the hustle, it’s way too strong / Way too strong,” he spits on the hook. Even more impressive than his ability to illustrate the pain of the ‘hood is his beyond-his-age wisdom, which shines through with lines like, “F— being fine, girl, you got to have a brain, too.”
It’s immediately apparent Cozz has all the raw ingredients to become a rappers’ rapper. Now let’s see if J. Cole and co. can help the kid reach his full potential. His full-length debut, ‘Cozz & Effect,’ is due out later this year.

Who Flipped It Better? Jay-Z or Curren$y?
The Sample: Rose Royce – ‘Wishing On A Star’ (1977)
Like Lil’ B once said – Rose Royce, Rose Royce, Rose Royce.
A trademark ’70s soul sample, ‘Wishing On A Star’ was a hit from Rose Royce’s second album, ‘In Full Bloom.’ It was produced by Norman Whitfield, one of the seminal Motown men who helped Berry Gordy craft the label’s inimitable sound. He co-wrote and produced huge hits for Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, and others. ‘Cloud Nine’ was his big break in 1968, and it set the precedent for more socially conscious, psychedelic music to spew from Hitsville.
Rose Royce itself was actually a group of musicians, not just vocalist Gwen Dickey. It was the only successful act on Whitfield’s eponymous label, which he started in 1973 after leaving Motown over creative differences with The Temptations. He brought The Undisputed Truth and Willie Hutch along with him, but Rose Royce was the only fortuitous venture, spawning chart-toppers like ‘Car Wash’ in 1976 and, to a lesser extent, ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ two years later.
Flip 1: Jay-Z – ‘Wishing On A Star’ (Prod. by Trackmasters) [1997]
‘Wishing On A Star’ was left off of the U.S. version of Jay-Z’s 1997 album ‘In My Lifetime, Vol. 1′ but included on the U.K. release. It features Gwen Dickey, the same woman who sang the original twenty years prior, and it’s one of Jay’s best lesser-known songs. The Trackmasters produced it, as well as the remix that boomed with Billy Squier drums. The flip is standard Trackmasters bubblegum, but it incorporates the orchestration of the Royce song well, reflecting the depth of the original’s production while ensuring that Hov’s version would have been a standout on the U.S. pressing of ‘Vol. 1.’
Flip 2: Nesby Phips – ‘Magic’ (Feat. Curren$y & Stalley) [2011]
But Ski Beatz flipped it better. In 2011 things were looking iffy for DD172. NYC brought the hammer down on Dame’s free-flowing alcohol, neighbors were complaining about the noise (and the weed smoke), and Curren$y had his eyes trained on Warner Bros. The star power of artists like Jay Electronica and Mos Def was beginning to dry up, and with it went the allure of Dame Dash’s creative paradise. By the end of the year, they’d shut down for good.
But in September, Nesby Phips let this loosie go starring Dame’s golden boy and the rapping beard. Curren$y had flashes of brilliance during his time on Duane Street, including his verse on Smoke DZA’s ‘Etc Etc,’ most of both ‘Pilot Talk’ albums, and this verse. Spitta’s chronic snobbery is on full display (“Rescue Ranger ass ni–as with the weed / always tryna save it, think you boss, you basic, clown”), but the dazzling thing about the song was Ski’s production.
For those that don’t know, Ski has been untouchable on the production tip since the early ’90s, starting as part of Original Flavor and eventually helming Jay-Z’s debut single, ‘In My Lifetime.’ He crafted classics for Camp Lo on ‘Uptown Saturday Night’ and would go on to work with artists like Nature, Big Pun, Sporty Thievz, Lil’ Kim, and tons more. When Dame decided to try his hand at another empire, he brought in the vet to handle Curren$y’s albums and drop gems like ‘Taxi’ and ‘Cream Of The Planet,’ both with Mos Def.
It’s almost impossible to hear the Royce flip at first because Ski snips very small parts of the original. You can watch Youtube videos of Ski chopping up samples to perfection on his MPC 2500, but he used the Maschine for ‘Magic’ (the same Maschine he used in Mass Appeal’s ingenius Rhythm Roulette episode). Trackmasters use the chorus of the original in a pretty conventional way, building the instrumentation around those vocals. Ski does something different — he makes a small echo of Dickey’s voice reverberate, like ripples in the water that join others to make larger rings. Handclaps make your head nod and wiffs of wah-wah guitar float through the beat (the guy who played guitar for Rose Royce was even named Mevlin “Wah Wah” Watson), but it’s those haunting stretches of “aaah” that waft toward the horizon and the beat so indelible. Trackmasters and Ski both had their hands in crafting classics for Jay, but Ski is still around today to prolong his legacy, and he proved it on ‘Magic.’
