Universal Music Dissolves Popular Island Def Jam Label (@DefJamRecords)

Island Def Jam, the iconic label that brought acts like Rihanna, Jay Z, Ne-Yo, Mariah Carey to the world and more, has dissolved after East Coast Label Group president and CEO Barry Weiss stepped down Tuesday.

According to Variety, the label will separate with the Motown label after moving to Los Angeles. Universal Music head Lucian Grainge believes that the label will hit the success that it had in the past by "re-establishing the label."

"At UMG, our labels are empowered to be entrepreneurial and take creative risks," he said. "By re-establishing Def Jam, Island and Motown as standalone labels within the UMG family. We're positioning them to recapture the uniqueness of their brands and serve artists with the singularity of vision, focus and creativity that was at the core of their original success."

Grange says that Weiss has done a great job leading Def Jam and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

"Barry is a terrific music executive who led our East Coast labels during a critical time of transition. I can't say enough about his contributions to our labels or to thank him enough."

Irv Gotti, who has voiced pushed for a presidency for Def Jam in the past, voiced his opinions about the recent change on his Instagram page.

"I been telling people that the powers that be. Don't care about Def Jam," he said."I feel like they will let that label just DIE! Take all the big artist on it. And work them still. But kill the LABEL! And to me. It's so f****d up. DEF JAM is the f*****g LIGHT OF HOPE for artist like Jay Z. DMX. Jeezy. Ja Rule. Nas. Fabulous. YG. It was a label created for the HIP HOP CULTURE!! But the people running the show now. Could care fucking less about our CULTURE. They are not Russell. Rick Rubin. Lyor. Kevin Liles or Jay Z. And they don't wanna put someone in there that will represent and hold down the fucking LOGO AND CULTURE the right way. Makes me physically sick. Def Jam means something to me. Means something to our CULTURE! And they don't give a f***!! Let me stop!! #ilovedefjam #ilovehiphopculture #youcannotstophiphip #f***yall"

Currently the label houses Jhene Aiko, August Alsina, YG, and 2 Chainz.

Florida Man Found Passed Out Behind the Wheel Clutching Burrito

A 36-year-old Deltona, Florida man was hauled in on misdemeanor DUI charges after police found him passed out drunk at a traffic light with a half-eaten Taco Bell burrito in his hand.

A witness started following Daniel Hernandez when he noticed him swerving in and out of traffic and briefly driving up onto a curb. The unnamed witness called police around 12:30 a.m. Monday after watching Hernandez sit through several light changes without moving.

When officers and paramedics arrived on the scene, they discovered Hernandez unconscious with his car running and his foot still on the brake.

"Fearing Hernandez would take his foot off the brake and potentially cause an accident at the intersection," officers beat on the windows and doors of Hernandez's 2002 Acura for about 10 minutes before finally deciding to smash a window.

No word on whether Hernandez was allowed to finish his burrito.

Rihanna In Search of New Movie Role, Avoiding Tyler Perry Projects

Rihanna Tyler PerryPascal Le Segretain / Kevin Winter, Getty Images

Rihanna is in search of her next movie role and starring in a Tyler Perry film isn’t on her to-do list.

According to Radar Online, the songstress, who landed a part in 2012′s ‘Battleship,’ is turning the other cheek when it comes to a role in one of Perry’s romantic comedies. Apparently Perry has been trying to meet with Rihanna for over a year to talk about building a film around her. However, action films are more her thing and she’d rather play the “tough girl.”

But why won’t the fashion-forward artist give the director the time of day to even discuss a potential offer? Before her death in 2012, Whitney Houston reportedly warned Rihanna to stay away from Tyler Perry movies because they feature “fading black stars, not rising ones,” a source confirmed. Houston thought highly of the Grammy Award-winning entertainer, enough to inform her that accepting an offer to be in one of his movies makes little sense.

“Rihanna so respected Whitney because in addition to being one of the biggest pop stars ever, she starred in hit movies such as ‘The Bodyguard,” the source said.

Tyler Perry is known for his ‘Madea’ string of films in addition to ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ and ‘For Colored Girls,’ in which Janet Jackson starred.

Before 2014 is over, Rihanna is reportedly “under a mandate” to begin filming a new movie.

What do you think? Should Rihanna take a role in a Tyler Perry movie or not? Sound off in the comments below.

Locksmith Recounts Past Abuse in 'Hardest Song Ever' Video

It takes a strong person to record a song like this, much less make it the lead single of your album. But it should come as no surprise that Locksmith would be the artist willing to be so brave and bold. ‘Hardest Song Ever’ relives painful memories, but also inspires hope for those who have gone through abuse.

“This is my personal account of abuse and its effect on my life. If my story can help any other person that is suffering, then I have truly accomplished something special.”

It is a powerful song and video as Locksmith’s verses are accompanied by people holding signs of encouragement for those who’ve been abused.

Locksmith sugarcoats nothing here as he raps, “And the memory, I suppressed it / depression is pressing, that’s what the stress did / I pushed away any woman I could connect with / that’s the s–t you do when you deal with being molested / infested with impatience, I started aching / hatred and deep guilt was the deadliest combination.”

Locksmith’s album ‘A Thousand Cuts’ will be released on April 15th and can be pre-ordered now on iTunes.

Family of NYC Mom Who Died From Discount Surgery Plans to Sue

The family of a Bronx woman is demanding answers after the 29-year-old died while undergoing discount plastic surgery in the Dominican Republic.

Beverly Brignoni, a single mother of one, flew to the capital city of Santo Domingo on Feb. 19 for a tummy tuck and liposuction at a clinic recommended by friends.

A day later, Dr. Guillermo Lorenzo walked out of the operating room at the Vista del Jardin clinic to inform Brignoni's boyfriend that the woman was dead.

"I'm still trying to understand it. I can't really comprehend that she's gone," said Lesley Martinez, 32, who traveled alongside his girlfriend to the DR.

"I was with her right up until she went into the surgery. We kissed goodbye, said we loved each other, and they wheeled her away," he said. "That was the last time I saw her."

Brignoni's godmother Bernadette Lamboy said the young mother spoke to surgeons in New York and the Dominican Republic before settling on Dr. Lorenzo.

He agreed to perform a tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast lift for $6,300. However, at the last minute Brignoni decided against the breast lift and they worked out a partial refund.

When Dr. Lorenzo met Mr. Martinez in the recovery room, he brought the worst possible news.

"He said he was so sorry, that she was gone, that he had lost her. He said she had an embolism and died."

The family has now hired a lawyer in the country and plans to sue both the clinic and the doctor.

London Releases a Smooth Joint 'Rollin"

4:20 EPSoundcloud

R&B singer London plans to celebrate the smoker’s holiday with his new EP, ’4:20,’ which drops on April 15. The set’s first single is the smooth track ‘Rollin’.’

As the title suggests, the Bay Area crooner boasts of his weed rolling skills. Think of the song as a smoothed-out companion to Redman‘s ‘How to Roll a Blunt.’

“Stuff it full of that good / Twist it up to perfection / My joint looks so good I should be giving lessons on rollin’ up,” he sings (via Auto-Tune).

Near the end of the song, London offers to help teach his lady friend the art of rolling a blunt.

“This is dedicated to the smokers! We like to call this ‘California Mood Music’… lush, bass heavy tracks, sparse lyrics & harmonies,” says London.

“This particular project is dedicated to the responsible enjoyment of cannabis sativa … it’s meant to serve as a soundtrack while enjoying your smoking session, chilling, etc. Enjoy!”

Whether you smoke weed or not, get high off of the soulful vibes of London’s new song below.

Young Thug Opens Official Merchandise Webstore

Young Stoner Life

Rapper Young Thug has stepped into the world of fashion with the debut of his first line of merchandise designed all on his own. Thugga launched the web-store earlier this week and it’s a virtual hot-box of stoner wear.

There’s plenty of crewnecks, hoodies, t-shirts and tanks in this collection that are emblazoned with Young’s own typography or his hilariously personal “Duey the Doobie” character. We couldn’t have dreamed up a better mascot for Young Thug when it comes to Duey, he’s almost a perfect representation of the rapper, though it does makes him a little softer in our eyes.

PTAF Deliver Polished Version of 'Boss Ass Bitch' Video

After grabbing over 14 million views with their original YouTube video and getting props from Nicki Minaj, rap newbies PTAF (Pretty Taking All Fades) are back with a more polished visual for their hit song, ‘Boss Ass Bitch.’

Directed by Lil’ Chri$, the rap trio — Alize, Kandi and K-Duce — spit their girl-power lyrics on the streets of Los Angeles (South Central to be exact). The ladies even take us to their favorite hair store to shop for a new weave. The clip also features cameos from former ‘Basketball Wives L.A.’ star Brooke Bailey and video vixen Tokyo Yen.

Although the song may be ratchet to some, PTAF have plenty of style with their pink varsity jackets, leather leggings, doorknocker earrings and converse sneakers.

Thanks to the song’s popularity on social media, the young girls have signed a deal with Capitol Records and are working on their debut album.

“It’s crazy how when we made this song we had no idea how many people would show and prove on Vine and Twitter how much they like it too,” said Alize. “No need to stop there, we are gonna keep giving the people more of what we’ve got straight outta South Central L.A.”

Wale Punches Heckler at WWE Event [VIDEO]

Don’t mess with Wale. The DMV rapper, who just released the remix to his new single ‘Sunshine,’ gave a Twitter troll his comeuppance for talking smack to him on the social media network.

According to Complex, Twitter user Side Show Joe posted some trolling tweets when he spotted Wale at a WWE event in Washington, D.C., Monday night (March 31).

“You at Monday night raw f—-boy? Come see me in the ring and catch this stunner @wale,” he tweeted.

Wale responded, “‘ight wya (where you at?),” to which Joe replied, LLLMMMMMMMAAAAOOOOO couple rows away breh.”

It was no laughing matter to Wale, as he was able to find Joe and confronted him.

A video of the brief skirmish shows ‘The Gifted’ creator shoving the heckler but no punches were thrown. We can also hear what appears to be to Joe saying to Wale, “It was just a joke.”

Side Show Joe later tweeted:

50 Cent Talks G-Unit Fallout, Eminem, Controversial Photos + More [VIDEO]

50 Cent returned to Power 105’s “The Breakfast Club” on Monday (March 31) and the conversation was anything but dull. The now independent rapper talked about his departure from Interscope, rap feuds, baby mama drama and his future in the rap game.

From the gate, Fif explained why he removed the controversial Instagram photo featuring Diddy, Steve Stoute and Rick Ross.

“I’m trying to change my image,” he said of his bullying ways. “As far as Instagram is concerned, that’s not a person’s actual life. That’s a presentation.”

On his sour relationship with ex-G-Unit members Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks, 50 blames himself for the fallout.

“Some people, they’re like milk. They have expiration dates. No matter what you do, they’ll spoil after a while,” he said about Yayo.

“In Banks’ case, I could be considered a little insensitive at some points ’cause I didn’t have those different things in my life,” he continued. “When his fathered passed, he went home and he crossed his arms and was there until I came to get him. I had to go get the boy out his room to go shoot the video.”

Elsewhere, 50 took some shots at his rival Rick Ross. When asked about street credibility in hip-hop, the ‘Many Men’ rapper said it’s doesn’t exist. He cites Rozay’s stint as a correction officer to now rapping about selling drugs as an example of why credibility is lost in the game. Oh, and he called Ross a slob.

“It ain’t the quality of his material because he’s a decent writer,” he said. “His performance can’t be good. He’s fat, sloppy — look at the guy. I didn’t see Biggie with his shirt off, running around doing what you see right there.”

On his friendship with Eminem, 50 said the rap business wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t for the Detroit rhyme-spitter.

“I don’t think our culture would’ve grown as fast as it did without Em,” he said. “My being associated with him allowed the doors to open easy. I’m proud of him.”

50 talks about a myriad of things including the music business, Chief Keef, Diddy, Jay Z and more. Watch the entire 70-minute video interview above.

Lil Marc Killed in Chicago, Fans Speculate Why Rapper Was Murdered

Lil MarcYouTube

Lil Marc, an up-and-coming rapper in Chicago’s drill scene, was shot and killed Friday (March 28).

According to DNAinfo, the 20-year-old rhymer was shot in the head at 1:27PM at a bus stop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have no suspects or motive for the shooting.

However, fans are speculating that Lil Marc, born Marc Campbell, was killed over his new video called ‘No Competition.’ In the clip, the rapper mocks his fellow street rivals, presumedly, rappers Lil Durk and Lil Reese.

Lil Marc leaves behind a pregnant girlfriend and his immediate family to mourn for him.

Police are unsure if Lil Marc’s shooting was related to another incident about an hour earlier in which a 25-year-old man was shot in the thigh. The victim is recovering at Stroger Hospital in Chicago.

Wiz Khalifa Performs 'We Dem Boyz,' Makes Stoney S'mores on 'Arsenio' [VIDEO]

When Wiz Khalifa stopped by ‘The Arsenio Hall Show’ Monday night (March 31), he did more than chat about his upcoming album, ‘Blacc Hollywood,’ and performed the new single, ‘We Dem Boyz.’ The rapper also made some post-blaze snacks with the TV show host.

Promoting his new LP, which is set for release later this year, Wiz announced that he just wrapped up a video for ‘We Dem Boyz’ and talked about the collaborations on the album.

“I work with a lot of people,” he said. “A lot of them are L.A.-based, Cali-based, my boy Ty Dolla $ign, my man Thundercat, my engineer Drew [Drucker], he’s helping me a lot with writing, putting the whole thing together musically. Of course, E. Dan and Sledgren, and all my cats from Pittsburgh, Jim Johnson, that’s the homie. I got some songs with Miley [Cyrus] on there.”

Since he revealed Miley’s contribution to the album, Arsenio had to ask how it was working with the pop star. “Insane,” Wiz quickly responded. “But in a good way though. She’s just a ball of energy, and she smokes a ton.”

It’s only natural that Arsenio would follow that up by inquiring what Wiz means by “a ton.”

“I don’t know, she’s younger so it’s different,” he replied. “Every five minutes, she’ll be like, ‘Hey Wiz, you don’t have a joint rolled? Well, like what’s up?’”

He continued, “She’s blowin’ like a train.”

Before Wiz performed ‘We Dem Boyz,’ Arsenio decided to introduce a cooking segment to late night TV by making some snacks with Wiz. The rapper reveals that he likes to snack at night often and eats eggs with cheese, onions and mushrooms as well as chips with ketchup. However, the host wanted to share a recipe for s’mores. Wiz later tossed a secret ingredient into the mix.

“Hey, hey, hey! This is a cooking segment, and that is oregano,” Arsenio announced.

10 Things 50 Cent Needs to Do to Become Relevant Again

50 CentJamie McCarthy, Getty Images

50 Cent is making a comeback. The rapper is gearing up for the June 3 release of his fifth studio album, ‘Animal Ambition.’ The last few years haven’t been the most productive for the rapper’s music career, although now that he’s cut his ties with the Interscope behemoth that released his previous projects, he’s in a position to embrace his newfound creative freedom and craft the sort of uncompromising album that reminds us all how he used to be one of hip-hop’s most fearsome forces. What must Curtis Jackson do to reclaim his crown? Here are 10 Things 50 Cent Needs to Do to Become Relevant Again.

50 Cent

Amazon

1

Forget About Chasing Chart Hits

50 is financially flush for life. Having sold over 20 million albums worldwide -- including a now legendary 872,000 first-week copies of his 2003 debut 'Get Rich or Die Tryin'' -- he shouldn't feel the pressure to aim for the pop charts with 'Animal Ambition.' He'd be better served by making an unerringly-hardcore album that channels the energy and anger of his early mixtape days.

After all, the tactic worked for his last great anthem, 'I Get Money,' which was hooked around 50 spitting arrogantly over little more than some brilliantly gutter-smeared drums. Leave the R&B hook singers at home for this one, Fif'.

50 Cent

Instagram

Before the release of 'Get Rich or Die Tryin',' 50 was the world's most dangerous rapper. His back story about having been shot nine times cast him as a menace to the mainstream's morals; his mixtapes presented him as an incendiary rapper ready to start beefs and throw shots on a whim.

After finding success though he's settled into a caricature of his former self, being content to get his kicks by playing pranks on Twitter. We need the old 50 back -- the one who underscored that trademark chipmunk grin with real menace in his eyes.

Kidd Kidd

Facebook

3

Keep the Guest List Exclusive

Early guest features for 'Animal Ambition' are rumored to include Styles P and Jadakiss, plus the lesser-known G-Unit member Kidd Kidd. The Lox men might be cameo kings but will their verses really add much to the album? Ditto for Kidd Kidd, who is slated to appear on an unnecessary three songs.

Fif' needs to ditch the random guest list for this one: How about capping the cameos at one track that reunites the original Guerrilla Unit foot soldiers Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo, plus maybe calling in a favor with Eminem and dressing up as "Gatman and Robbin" all over again?

Roc Marciano

Facebook

4

Head Underground for Beats

50 Cent became a superstar from the jump due to mega-budget production from Dr. Dre. That was over a decade ago though and since then his ability to stay relevant in the musical mainstream has been diminishing.

So how about playing a production wildcard for 'Animal Ambition' and handing the entire project over to New York's most critically-acclaimed underground figures, Roc Marciano and KA? After all, 50 has already expressed his admiration for Brownsville KA's ability to craft evocatively brooding music and Roc's stock is steadily rising after Jay Z and Questlove co-signed his music via tweets. Let Roc and KA team up and bring back that eerie murder music vibe for 50.

50 Cent

Instagram

This Queens, N.Y., native has always prided himself on being emotionally guarded -- he'd prefer to spit about letting off a barrage of bullets rather than confess to moments of doubt or insecurity. But those scant occasions when he has opened up in song are some of his most effective -- not least with his 12-bar confessional on 'Hate It or Love It.'

50 recently told MTV News that he thinks Lloyd Banks needs to toughen up after the passing of his father -- but most times getting a little emotional helps the music connect with fans. Fif' might want to re-think his G-Unit therapist tactics.

50 Cent

Instagram

Alternatively, if 50 isn't comfortable with revealing more of his inner feelings to the world, he should hole up with a pair of SMS Audio headphones and blitz through a bunch of his early mixtapes. It might help him reconnect with the humor that used to run through his music, whether dropping deliberately crass boasts or cheeky threats towards his rivals.

50 should leave the Twitter jokes alone for a minute and air out that wicked sense of humor in his raps again.

50 Cent

Instagram

For all his sales records and platinum plaques, Fif' isn't usually lauded as one of the pure lyrical greats. Not that the potential isn't there -- he just needs to challenge himself conceptually. When he does stretch himself he's capable of penning poignant and persuasive lyrics, as with his anthropomorphic heroin rap 'Baltimore Love Thing.' Let's see more of the creative 50, please.

50 Cent

Instagram

Bragging and boasting has always been a key part of hip-hop, but too often a millionaire rapper's boasts about being rich come off as hollow. Do we really need to hear again how Fif' made more money from his Vitamin Water deal than most rappers do in their entire career?

For 'Animal Ambition,' he needs to talk less about what he already has and start letting us know what he wants in the future. Or at the very least give us 'How to Rob a Tech Start-Up C.E.O.'

50 Cent

Amazon

9

Ditch 'Animal Ambition' Cover Art

According to an image on 50 Cent's website, the cover art to 'Animal Ambition: An Untamed Desire To Win' (to give the project its full motivational title) features a snarling lion's head. Unfortunately, it does little more than bring to mind those bizarre 'Watch the Throne' images of Jay Z and Kanye West morphed into big cats. Having your own album cover recall the work of your rivals is not exactly a savvy move. Switch it up, Fif'!

Jay Z

Amazon

Speaking of 'Watch the Throne,' maybe the 'Animal Ambition' artwork is just the first step in 50 Cent finally announcing open season on his long-suspected industry foe, Jay Z. Since the days of 'How to Rob,' where 50 dropped tongue-in-cheek lyrics about robbing other rappers, rumors have suggested Jay has not been particularly enamored with 50. (Fif's stick-up kid fantasy had him claiming, "What, Jigga just sold like four milli? Got something to live for/ Don't want a n---- putting four through that Bentley Coupe door.")

Recently Fif' has been throwing shots at Jay in interviews by claiming he sold millions of records during Jigga's various retirements. How about they quit the subliminals and air this beef out once and for all? 50 and Jay going track-for-track in a good old fashioned dis war would ensure one hell of a hot summer.

Well-known NBA groupie/prostitute Candy Deepthroat is making waves once again after claiming on Instagram to have recently sucked off two Minnesota Timberwolves players for the sum of $3,500.

Media Takeout claims to allegedly know the identity of the Timberwolves players in question. The gossip blog says an unnamed source who was staying at the same hotel claims to have spotted Candy entering an elevator with Kevin Martin and Corey Brewster. We'd like to stress that there's absolutely zero evidence for this claim.

Candy, who's been linked in the past to other players including Matt Barnes and Lance Stephenson, once explained why she does what she does.

"I just enjoy myself and I'm a very sexual person so I sleep with sexy guys and I get paid for that. A lot of girls do it for free. I just have the mindset that if I'm gonna be boning somebody sexy, why not benefit more than just getting my orgasm on?"

Activist Calls To Boycott Kobe After Trayvon Martin Comments (@kobebryant)

Kobe Bryant's comments on Trayvon Martin have pushed an activist to boycott the player.

According to Fox News, Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic H.O.P.E. and supporter of Trayvon Martin called for a boycott of Kobe Bryant and his merchandise.

"African American youth should no longer buy Bryant's jerseys or shoes and should boycott all products he endorses," Ali said in a statement. "Bryant doesn't identify with the struggle that our African-American youth face nationally. So why should we continue to support Bryant who has never truly identified with the African American experience."

Ali also sent a special message to the Martin family on Facebook after Kobe's comments on Friday.

"I'm not a ball player like Kobe Bryant. But God put me on this earth to help people. I'm going to speak up for Trayvon Martin because he can't speak himself. To my friend Sybrina Fulton Trayvon's mom. We love you. L.A has your family's back. We'll keep dealing with Kobe. You keep staying strong. Najee Ali"

Kobe's was interviewed by the New Yorker and sparked a debate Thursday after criticism of African American intent when supporting the Trayvon Martin case in 2013. "I won't react to something just because I'm supposed to, because I'm an African-American." he said.
