Black Milk Enlists the Legendary Bun B for 'Gold Piece'

Facebook

It’s hard to imagine, but Black Milk just keeps getting better. The Detroit MC/producer seems to top himself with each album and he’ll look to do it again with the release of ‘If There’s a Hell Below’ due out on Oct. 28th. The albums boasts some impressive guests with the likes of Pete Rock, Blu, Sean Price and Guilty Simpson appearing on the project. The album’s third single, ‘Gold Piece’, features another guest as the legendary Bun B of UGK joins the Detroit native on the track.

Black Milk explains that the song is a “story about how the only role models for young guys in the hood are the older guys that hustle on their blocks. They’re often the only example of what young guys see themselves becoming once they’re older, and the cycle continues for generations to come.”

It’s a fitting concept for the Trill O.G. Bun B to participate in as Black Milk concocts an extra soulful production for their respective sides of the tale to unfold. Black Milk rhymes about the harsh realities of growing up with limited options in your life and the choices one has to make. Bun B comes in with the perspective of a hardened street vet relaying the consequences of those decisions.

Bun raps, “So this is what it comes down to, you in the center with gladiators around you / Can’t identify the body how they found you, it’s ‘gon take more than a stone pipe and some hounds too / And a Doctor Watson when I hit you a– with some hot courtesy of the shotgun / Real n—a, you not one, trill n—-s, you got none / Leave your insides on the floor, now you outdone / Son, I’ma tell you like yo daddy would / Don’t play around with this boy whipping caddy wood / Don’t try your luck, if I roll through duck / Cause there’s shells on sales, more bang for the buck / F–k, no talk, I want war with you / N—a say he want beef, let’s have a barbecue / And I’ma give him a two piece and a biscuit / Put the ox to his cell and cook his a– to a brisket, b—h.”

You can pre-order Black Milk’s much anticipated ‘If There’s a Hell Below’ right now via iTunes and Bandcamp.

Iggy Azalea's Former Manager Says She Signed Off on Sex Tape

Iggy AzaleaKevin Winter, Getty Images

Iggy Azalea may not want a sex tape to come out but Jefe Wine, her ex-boyfriend and former manager, claims the rapper signed off on the visual, making it legal for him to sell and promote it.

According to TMZ, in 2009, the Aussie rap star signed typical management paperwork, which gave Wine the rights to “manufacture, sell, distribute and advertise any recording embodying visual images.” It’s likely Azalea only applied the language to music videos and recording songs. But Wine thinks all he needs to do is place music under the sex tape in order to have the exclusive rights to sell it.

The ‘Fancy’ rapper initially denied there was even a tape of herself at all last week, but still took the time to blast those who were looking for one. “Obviously, I’ve seen the news feed today and I just want to say….I don’t have a sex tape, but for the record…Anyone who releases or attempts to make profit off someone else’s intimate moments against their will is a sex offender,” she wrote via Twitter. “And it honestly makes me sick to see the media encourage any other attitude towards those sorts of people, we should want to protect our women.”

But Azalea’s lawyer, just hours after she blasted rumors of a tape, said she might just be the woman featured in the video. The lawyer reveals that the footage was likely shot “without her knowledge or consent.”

Jermaine Dupri Plays 'Wikipedia Fact Or Fiction?'

The world of Wikipedia can be a wild place. You see kids, before you could go online and read dubious, user-generated informational entries on your favorite subjects there used to be these things called “encyclopedias” — big, heavy, books that listed subjects in books in alphabetical order over the course of many volumes. Sound cumbersome? They were.

Wondering why people would buy volumes and volumes of books of facts that would inevitably be outdated almost as soon as they were printed? Well, because no Internet. The one thing that made encyclopedias handy is that the info in them was sourced from actual experts, fact checked by professional fact checkers who cross referenced the entries and edited by editors who like went to school for reading and writing and stuff.

Though we have great reverence Wikipedia we do realize that sometimes contributors get facts wrong or just simply make s–t up, so in our “Wikipedia Fact or Fiction?” video series we sit down with a subject to hear straight from the horse’s mouth if the Wiki facts about them are actually factual or fallacies.

For this episode we sat down with SoSo Def founder, songwriter producer and executive Jermaine Dupri to talk about his upbringing and decades-long career in music. How’d he meet Kris Kross? How long did he wear his pants backwards? How long did he date Janet Jackson for? Is he really a martial artist? We answer these questions and more in our interview. Watch part one of it above and be on the look out for part two next week.

35 Years Ago: The Sugarhill Gang Releases 'Rapper's Delight'

It was the novelty hit that legitimized an entire genre of music. Released on September 16, 1979, the Sugarhill Gang‘s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ introduced hip-hop to the world: to the black, white, red, brown, purple and yellow.

Although the single wasn’t the first rap song put out on vinyl – that distinction belongs to the Fatback Band’s B-side ‘King Tim III (Personality Jock),’ released a month earlier – ‘Rapper’s Delight’ was hip-hop’s first hit, a worldwide smash that built on what young African-Americans and Latinos had been doing for years in New York City. Before the idea of a “rap record” came about, teenagers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens would throw massive neighborhood parties, sometimes with a real DJ, other times with just boomboxes blasting grooves from soul and disco records. For hours upon hours, different rappers would take turns improvising or delivering pre-crafted rhymes as the crowds danced.

Yet, none of the key players in New York’s hip-hop scene decided to record their raps (and some simply didn’t have the means). That idea came from Sylvia Robinson, an R&B singer (and former member of Mickey and Sylvia) who had founded Sugar Hill Records with her husband Joe. Sylvia, then in her early 40s, had discovered hip-hop culture via one of her kids and decided a rap single could be something that would help her fledgling music label. But when Sugar Hill approached the established rappers in the city’s hip-hop scene, none were interested in making a record. Robinson had to dig a little deeper to find a performer that was interested, and she discovered him in a pizza parlor.

Henry “Big Bank Hank” Jackson was born in the Bronx, but was working at a pizza place in Englewood, New Jersey, when he was approached about rapping on a record. Jackson was involved in hip-hop, but he wasn’t well-known for his rapping skills. Jackson managed a rap crew called the Cold Crush Brothers. After agreeing to audition for Robinson, Jackson asked Cold Crush member Grandmaster Caz for rhymes. Caz handed him his notebook, assuming he’d get something in return later. Jackson delivered Caz’s rhymes verbatim (which is why he calls himself one of Caz’s aliases, Casanova Fly, on the final recording) and became part of Robinson’s Sugarhill Gang. The trio included two other young rappers with zero street cred: Michael “Wonder Mike” Wright and Guy “Master Gee” O’Brien.

Michael Ochs Archive, Getty Images

Of course, Robinson’s new group needed a beat to rap over. In the summer of ’79, the most popular song at hip-hop events was Chic’s ‘Good Times,’ featuring Bernard Edward’s stomping bassline. At the time, sampling was not yet in vogue, so Robinson arranged to pay two musicians to recreate the instrumental track to ‘Good Times’ as long as they could go for 15 minutes without mistakes. The Sugarhill Gang made use of almost all 15 minutes; the original 12” single release ran an astounding 14:35 (although, as the song became more popular, Robinson released two edited-down versions).

Around the same time, Chic guitarist and songwriter Nile Rodgers was becoming aware (partly via his friendship with members of Blondie) of New York’s hip-hop scene and its adoration of the breakdown of ‘Good Times.’ Mere days after ‘Rapper’s Delight’ was released, Chic opened a concert for the Clash at New York’s Palladium and were joined by Fab Five Freddy and other local rappers who freestyled during the band’s performance of ‘Good Times.’

Rodgers was much less pleased a few weeks later when he was at a nightclub and heard the familiar bassline to his band’s #1 come on the sound system, accompanied by “I said a hip hop

…” Rodgers ran up to the DJ and found he had just purchased the 12” single of a song called ‘Rapper’s Delight.’ Co-writers Rodgers and Edwards sued Sugar Hill Records, but ended up settling out of court and were appropriately credited for their musical contribution on all subsequent releases. He now considers the song one of his all-time favorites.

The members of Chic weren’t the only ones who took little delight in the radio hit. Rap pioneers such as Grandmaster Flash and Kurtis Blow were upset that this unknown group of amateurs were getting credit for a style of music they had helped create. Plus, most “real” rappers sneered at the Sugarhill Gang’s relatively basic (and, in at least one case, borrowed) rhymes. Street cred has always been an important factor in hip-hop and ‘Rapper’s Delight’ didn’t have any.

However, mainstream audiences didn’t care about authenticity. ‘Rapper’s Delight’ was fun, it was new and it became a big hit in multiple countries (top 40 in the U.S. and Australia, top 10 in the U.K. and Germany and a No. 1 single in Canada and the Netherlands). Years later, time has softened most rappers’ opinions on hip-hop’s first hit. Once it was apparent that rap records weren’t a one-and-done phenomenon (‘Rapper’s Delight’ paved the way, commercially for the New York scene’s “legitimate” rappers), the majority of hip-hop pioneers were able to laugh about the song’s silly rhymes and appreciate its groundbreaking success.

To this day ‘Rapper’s Delight’ remains a cultural touchstone. It’s a landmark in both hip-hop and pop culture history, responsible for everything from rapping grandmothers (‘The Wedding Singer’) to viral videos featuring news anchors Brian Williams and Lester Holt. ‘Rapper’s Delight’ just keeps going “on ’n ’n on ’n on-on ’n on.”

August Alsina Collapses at New York Show [VIDEO]

R&B crooner August Alsina collapsed onstage during his performance for the Testimony Live tour in New York on Monday night (Sept. 15).

According to eyewitnesses, the singer was performing when he suddenly fainted and fell off the stage into the audience. Thankfully, security was on the scene and ushered him away.

Paramedics were called and treated the ‘No Love’ artist backstage. He was later taken out on a stretcher and transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

There’s no word on his current condition as of yet. Reps for Alsina have not commented on the matter.

Fans were in shock and went on Twitter to wish Alsina a speedy recovery.

“Damn, all I was tryna do today was see and take a pic with August Alsina and I end up seeing him get dragged into the ambulance,” wrote one concerned concertgoer.

“August passed out and fell off stage please get better love you,” tweeted another fan.

This was the third to last show on the crooner’s Testimony Live tour, which is scheduled to wrap in Kansas City, Mo., on Sept. 21.

Alsina just dropped his new video for his latest single ‘No Love’ remix featuring Nicki Minaj hours before his show.

Get well soon August Alsina.

Kanye West Defends Himself Against Wheelchair Controversy at Australia Concert [VIDEO]

Yeezus can do many things, but making the wheelchair-bound stand for the sake of turning up isn’t one of them.

Kanye West got caught up in some controversy over the weekend when he stopped his show in Australia and accidentally called out two handicapped attendees for not standing up. In typical ‘Ye fashion, he defended himself during a show at Brisbane, Australia on Monday (Sept. 15).

The rapper, who’s been outspoken against the media, used the coverage of his actions as an example of how reporters try to sensationalize his actions.

“It’s like, ‘Welcome to today’s news ladies and gentlemen, we got Americans getting killed on TV, kids getting killed every weekend in Chicago, we have unarmed people being killed by police officers, and we have Kanye West buying ice cream — and also that squirrel can jet ski,” West says. “You know it makes you just want to reflect on the things that are a little more sensationalized than others. I want to take this platform.

“If I didn’t have this last concert maybe I would have tweeted or something. Maybe I would have put a statement with a publicist, but I can talk directly to you, my fans, because they got this thing where they want the masses, the people who have never even heard one of my albums to somehow read a headline that reads negative and to think I’m a bad person or something. But the thing is, I’m not judging anybody, but I’m going to tell you who I am: I’m a married Christian man.”

The show is actually the last in a short Australian tour that saw him rocking a new haircut and being rushed to the hospital. But now that that’s out the way, West can focus on putting out new music for the fall.
