Songs of the Week: Travi$ Scott, Big Gipp and Young Buck

Mike Coppoa / Alberto E. Rodriguez / Ethan Miller, Getty Images

Last week, Action Bronson took the top slot in our Songs of the Week with his latest release, “Terry,” while Big Sean and Mack Wilds rounded out the list. This week’s lineup could possibly trump the previous one as it is filled with plenty of fire power. Big Sean continued to grab listeners attention with his “Me, Myself And I” hijack and Fashawn represent for the indie scene with the release of his sophomore LP, The Ecology, but truth be told, this week produced more news headlines than blockbuster music releases.

There are a few gems hidden in the rough that is the online terrain. Spanning from tried and true vets to relative unknowns, our three selections for this week are a unique, albeit potent mix of musical talent. Let’s get to the matter at hand, which is running down the hottest tunes of the past seven days featuring the likes of Travi$ Scott, Big Gipp, Young Buck and more.

1

"Beautiful Lover"

Big Gipp Feat. Eric Benet

Maintaining a career that spans over two decades can take a toll on anyone, let alone someone whose profession is being a recording artist. Take it from Goodie Mob member Big Gipp, who said that he “had fallen out of love with rap" in a statement to fans that accompanies his latest release, "Beautiful Lover."

Featuring R&B singer Eric Benet, the track is an uptempo number dominated by claps and guitar riffs that Gipp manipulates into his own sonic playground. Benet gives an passionate performance on the hook. Produced by DR Freak, "Beautiful Lover" is the first single off Gipp's upcoming album, Zagga, slated for release in spring.

2

"Drug Money"

Young Buck Feat. Troy Ave & 50 Cent

Young Buck has been on quite a tear since his reemergence on the scene following G-Unit's reunion last summer. He showed out on the new tracks that the crew has released in addition to dropping a slew of noteworthy cuts of his own. Fresh off the release of a quick-strike EP earlier this month, the Tennessee native is back with another scorcher, "Drug Money."

Enlisting the help of rising Brooklyn rapper Troy Ave and 50 Cent, the trio link up and cook up some audio dope for the rap fiends enjoyment. Kilos get sold and pies get baked on this aggressive banger of a record that will leave you fixing for continuous replays.

3

"Trippin On Me"

Tommy Brown Featuring Travi$ Scott & Eric Bellinger

Long relegated to the background, music producers are now stepping to the forefront of the industry and making great songs for themselves as well as hot beats for others. The latest example of this is Los Angeles-based producer Tommy Brown, who impresses with his debut release on the mic, "Trippin On Me."

Featuring Travi$ Scott and Eric Bellinger, the inspiration for the song came from his relationship with Travi$ and Bellinger. "Being around them both early in their career and knowing they were both artists starting from ground zero, focused on what they were doing but coming from opposite worlds, I thought it would be cool to bring those two together and work on an idea that would mess people up," Brown states.

Well, Brown's plan was executed to perfection, as this infectious number snags the top spot in this edition of Songs of the Week and hits a homerun on his first at-bat. Not bad at all.

Common Explains Oprah Diss, Jay Z's Reaction to His Oscar Win on 'Jimmy Kimmel' [VIDEO]

There’s no question that Common is beaming right now. After winning his first Oscar at the 87th annual Academy Awards, the Chicago rhymer appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about his glorious win for Best Original Song for “Glory.”

Com, holding the Oscar statue in his hand, revealed to Kimmel what Jay Z told him after winning the trophy. “He just was really proud,” he said. “He felt that I represented all of us. People from hip-hop, as black men, as people of love, children of God, he felt that John [Legend] and I were representing that with this Academy Award.”

True indeed.

Common also explained why he swerved Oprah Winfrey when he won his award at the Oscars. In the viral clip, you can see the Nobody Smiling creator avoid O when she raised her hand for a high five. “I didn’t know if that high five was for me or for John, so I went ‘safe’ and went for David,” he explained.

But no worries. Com talked to Oprah afterward and smooth things out. “We talked the next day and it was like, ‘I wasn’t trying to play you out,’” he said.

During the interview, Common also talked about being a ball boy for the Chicago Bulls and owning a prized possession of signed Air Jordan 1 sneakers.

Leonard Nimoy, Mr. Spock of 'Star Trek,' Dies at 83, Celebrities React

Leonard NimoyJasonKempin, Getty Images

Leonard Nimoy, who famously played Mr. Spock in the 1966 television series Star Trek and in film adaptations, passed away in Los Angeles on Friday (Feb. 27). His wife, Susan, told the New York Times that the 83-year-old veteran actor died from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Nimoy’s granddaughter, Dani, confirmed the sad news on Twitter as well. She wrote:

Hi all, as you all know, my Grandpa passed away this morning at 8:40 from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was an extraordinary man, husband, grandfather, brother, actor, author-the list goes on- and friend. Thank you for the warm condolences. May you all LLAP (Long Live and Prosper).”

Although Nimoy was famous for his role as the Vulcan Spock, he was very active in many fields of the arts. He became an author and poet (published two popular books: I Am Not Spock in 1977 and I Am Spock in 1995) and a filmmaker (he directed the 1987 comedy Three Men and a Baby).

After discovering his Jewish heritage, he would take on another favorite pastime — photography. In 2002, Nimoy published Shekhina, a Jewish-themed book devoted to photography and the aspect that God was feminine.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek, remembered his dear friend in a heartfelt tweet. “I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love,” he wrote.

Leonard Nimoy is survived by his wife, his children, Adam and Julie Nimoy; a stepson, Aaron Bay Schuck; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and an older brother, Melvin.

Leonard Nimoy will live long and prosper in our hearts and minds. May he rest in peace.

Nike LeBron 12 Low LeBronald Palmer

Hanon

LeBron James is good for pushing out a refreshing silhouette and his latest drop plays heavily off of that fact. The Nike LeBron 12 Low dons the feel of one of the most refreshing beverages of all time for the flavorful LeBronald Palmer colorway.

The blend of tea and lemonade, known as the Arnold Palmer, is personified by way of the shoe with a tropical feel that features teal palm tree prints and bright yellow mesh overlays. Hits of orange also liven things up while a self-explanatory sockliner puts the drink that inspires the look on full display.

This tasty treat will be at Hanon and other European retailers on Feb. 28, but details for its release in the states is scant. We’re fully aware that the Nike LeBron 12 Low LeBronald Palmer is going to go big this summer.

Iggy Azalea Gets Hauled Off in Handcuffs by Jennifer Hudson in 'Trouble' Video

Iggy Azalea and Jennifer Hudson hook up in the visual for the rapper’s latest single, “Trouble.”

Azalea and her love interest pull up in front of a bank, which — unbeknownst to the Aussie native — he plans to rob. After attempting to escape, he’s apprehended by the police, one of which happens to be J-Hud, and subsequently arrested.

While transporting the guy to prison, Hudson belts out the hook with her usual brand of soulful sass and power vocals, pulling off her role as the sultry Ms. Officer effectively. Azalea comes to visit her bad-boy beau in jail, where we find out she’s more Bonnie to his Clyde than an innocent gal as she stages a jailbreak — but not without J-Hud catching wind of it.

Leading the cops on a high-speed chase, the two outlaws eventually crash into a fire hydrant and the rhymer’s lover is arrested once more and hauled off to the slammer again.

Hudson and Azalea dance and mean-mug for the camera, but in the end, the Reclassified creator doesn’t get away unscathed. Officer Hudson abruptly puts the cuffs on her, effectively ending her crime spree.
