Rihanna Accused of Copying FKA twigs' Look on New Magazine Cover

Rihanna FKA twigsIan Gavan / Frederick M. Brown, Getty Images

To be Rihanna is to be constantly in close proximity to controversy. This week is another reminder of that universal law.

The Bajan songstress is being accused by fans of mimicking FKA twigs‘ look on the cover of i-D magazine’s Music Issue. Rihanna’s eccentric braided hair makes the cover stand out, which twigs’ supporters claim she adopted first. The ‘Video Girl’ singer has worn her hair in a similar style like this for her recent V magazine cover and, interestingly enough, on i-D as well. The video for ‘Pendulum‘ also features twigs bound by braided hair.

For many, this is a very serious matter.

Neither Rihanna nor FKA twigs have responded to the accusations, which are popping up all over Twitter. The latter has tweeted against controversy before, and Rihanna is heavy enough on social media to catch wind of the claims.

Find out what the fans are saying below.

Suge Knight's Beef With Dr. Dre Sparked Fatal Hit-and-Run

New details have surfaced in the fatal hit-and-run, in which Suge Knight accidentally ran over two men — killing one — after an altercation in Compton, Calif.

The former rap mogul’s attorney, James Blatt, said that Knight was lured into a fast-food restaurant parking lot for a meeting, which then escalated into altercation.

According to TMZ, Knight was invited to broker a peace treaty between himself and Dr. Dre while filming was underway on the set of the N.W.A biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton.’ Apparently, Knight got into a physical pushing match with Dr. Dre’s security team and was ordered to leave.

Later that afternoon, Knight received a call from Terry Carter, who wanted to meet with him at Tam’s Burgers’ parking lot to work things out. It was there that the 49-year-old music mogul was attacked by four people while inside of his truck.

Mr. Blatt told the Associated Press (via NBC Los Angeles) that the confrontation ended with his client accidentally running over the two men, including the deceased victim, 55-year-old Carter.

“It looks like he drove backward and struck the victims and then went forward and struck them again as he left,” said Lt. John Corina of the LA County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. “It looked like it was an intentional act and would be treated as a homicide.”

Knight is currently in jail on charges of murder with a $2 million bail set. A court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday (Feb. 3).

Knight has another legal case pending involving his arrest in October 2014, for stealing a photographer’s camera. If convicted, he could face 30 years in prison.

Bobby Shmurda Could Be Released From Jail Next Week [VIDEO]

Bobby Shmurda has been going through a roller coaster ride in his legal case since his Dec. 17 arrest. However, there may be a silver lining in all of this.

According to Bossip, the ‘Hot N—-’ rapper could be out on bail next week. Ira Judelson, a bail bondsman, is working to get Shmurda, born Ackquille Pollard, and his brother, Jahvas, out of Rikers Island. The two have been in protective custody for the past month. He claims that he will put up the Brooklyn native’s $2 million bail.

Judelson, known as the bail bondsman to the stars, has been a savior in helping high-profile celebrities get out of bond. His previous clients include Ja Rule, Lawrence Taylor and Plaxico Burress.

“At the end of the day, I’m their bank. I’m the one who is going to be putting up the money to secure their appearance in court,” he said. “Bobby is relying on me to put up the $2 million to get him out the door, get him back to his family and get his music career back on track.”

As we previously reported, Shmurda and Jahvas pleaded not guilty to various conspiracy, weapon and narcotics charges. Meanwhile, fellow rapper Rowdy Rebel also pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, attempted assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and conspiracy. In addition, other GS9 members pleaded not guilty to slew of charges stemming from various alleged shootings in the city.

Shmurda’s attorney, Kenneth Montgomery, is eager to get the Brooklyn rapper out of custody so he can properly defend him. “We’re hopefully going to post bail for this young man, and move forward, and litigate this case,” he said.

Hopefully, Shmurda can get out and try to repair his fractured rap career and prepare for his defense. This is going to be the biggest fight he’s ever had in his life.

We wish him the best of luck.

Sneaker of the Week: Nike Air Trainer 3 'Knicks'

Oneness

There is nothing more fun than seeing Nike put thoughtful effort into bringing one of their retro models back into the spotlight. This year it seems that the Nike Air Trainer 3 is getting all of the good looks and it’s hard to turn a blind eye to any of the colorways that have popped up. This new Knicks-inspired version is also serving as our Sneaker of The Week.

This time, the trainer keeps the colorway subtle by bouncing black against white leather and pure platinum nubuck. That Knickstape feel comes courtesy of lyon blue and total orange elements, which aren’t overbearing at all and honestly can fly for people who aren’t basketball fans.

When the book is closed on 2015, the Nike Air Trainer 3 will be one of the models that has quietly dropped the most heat. If you don’t want to miss out on the wave, hit up Oneness to cop these today.

T.I. Says Iggy Azalea Is Talking Too Much [VIDEO]

These days, Iggy Azalea‘s Twitter beefs have gotten just as much attention as her music. The rapper’s latest spat involves shoe designer Steve Madden, due to a “disgusting” photo shoot the brand released without her consent.

Now her boss T.I. is speaking out on the issue. He advises the blonde beauty to focus more on music and less on blasting people.

After a TMZ reporter asked the rapper if Iggy should be responding to every little criticism, Tip said this: “She should focus on what got her here. That’s her music, her performing, and continue to just present her talents to the world.”

Since this is Superbowl weekend, the Grand Hustle boss used an appropriate football analogy to explain how the Aussie rapper should handle herself.

“It’s just like asking Tom Brady if he should be commenting on Deflate-Gate,” he explained. “He should be worrying about the big game on Sunday, correct? Same with Iggy.”

The ‘No Mediocre’ creator may have shared this with Azalea already. Either way, we agree with Tip.

New Music Releases – February 2015

ghostface kid ink big seanKevin Winter / Neilson Barnard / Neilson Barnard, Getty Images

January is usually the dry month for music. It wasn’t too bad this year, though. Lupe Fiasco dropped a great album and Joey Bada$$ sold a solid 58,000 to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. And don’t sleep: Jazmine Sullivan returned strong with a great album, ‘Reality Show.’

February is looking like another solid 28 days of music. Barring a surprise Kendrick Lamar or Kanye West release, Big Sean will have the biggest release with ‘Dark Sky Paradise. There’s been plenty of talk about Sean’s improvement over the past few months. ‘4th Quarter‘ and his guest spot on Meek Mill’s ‘B Boy‘ hinted at his solid rapping ability while ‘IDFWU’ proved he still has Billboard amicability. ‘Dark Sky Paradise,’ Sean’s comeback album following the disappointing ‘Hall of Fame,’ drops Feb. 24.

Other anticipated releases from the genre include projects by duos. Chris Brown and Tyga’s ‘Fan of a Fan 2′ — which caught headlines for its Kriss Kross-inspired cover — and Ghostface Killah and Canadian jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD ‘Sour Soul’ are also expected to arrive.

Rounding up the month’s spate of releases are TeeFLii’s debut, Kid Ink‘s sophomore effort and a posthumous project from Lil Snupe. Check out the release dates below.

Best Songs of the Week: Vic Mensa, Royce da 5'9″, Your Old Droog and Jodeci

Larry Marano / Jamie McCarthy / Stefan Zaklin, Getty Images

Here at The Boombox, we pride ourselves on delivering the best in hip-hop and R&B on a daily basis. From industry veterans to new artists, keeping our readers up to date with the latest music is our priority. But at times, a simple post doesn’t do a particular song justice and its importance may get lost in the shuffle. We’ve decided to present our Songs of the Week column to highlight the tracks we feel are the most noteworthy releases you need to hear.

Being that three is the magic number according to the gospel that is Schoolhouse Rock (which happens to be a guilty pleasure at The Boombox), we’re putting you on to three tracks from Vic Mensa, DJ Kaytranada, Royce da 5’9″, Your Old Droog, DJ EFN, OC, Reks and Jodeci that are more than deserve a spin or three. Press play below and feel free to leave your picks in the comments section.

Iconic '90s R&B group Jodeci will forever have country in the hearts of hip-hop fans. After more than a decade of being disbanded, the original bad boys of rhythm and blues surprised a number of fans when they decided to officially reunite while performing at the Soul Train Awards show in 2014.

The B.o.B.-assisted one-off 'Nobody Knows' was a pretty solid attempt, but the Carolina natives truly hit their stride on the recently released ballad, 'Every Moment.' Featuring production that sounds like it was snatched from a vintage DeVante Swing beatmaking session, the sound may be familiar, but is far from dated. 'Every Moment' gets our nod of approval and is one R&B cut from the past week that you sure don't want to sleep on -- for nostalgic and quality purposes alike.

'Drive Me Crazy'

Vic Mensa

Canadian producer Kaytranada has been one of the most buzzing boardsmen in the music world as of late. Leaning more towards synthesizers and trippy sounds than grungy samples, he has cultivated a following for his infectious remixes of popular songs, as well as cooking up his dance-influenced brand of audio crack for the likes of Mobb Deep, Mick Jenkins and Vic Mensa.

The Montreal music man has an upcoming album, 'So Bad,' set for release later this year, which he announced in December of 2014. Last week, we got our first taste of what the LP will have in store in the form of the Vic Mensa collab, 'Drive Me Crazy.'

Picking up right where they left off on their last collaboration, 'Wimmie Nah,' the two create magic. Mensa does his part with a stone cold (and albeit, admittedly Drake-ish) flow and his charismatic energy. Kaytranada shows us how they give it up sonically across the border.

'Revolutionary Ride Music'

DJ EFN Feat. Your Old Droog, Royce Da 5'9, OC & Reks

A few high-profile tracks were released in the past week, including bangers by heavyweights such as Lil Wayne and Migos; Young Thug and Rich Homie; and Big Sean, Drake and Kanye West ('Blessings'). But the selection that piques our interest this week is the lyrical miracle, 'Revolutionary Ride Music.'

The latest leak off of Miami-based DJ EFN's upcoming album, the song features an impressive roster of wordsmiths, including veterans Royce Da 5'9", OC and Reks, as well as rising rhymer Your Old Droog, and all come well-equipped with their respective brands of verbal weaponry.

Rewind-worthy rap is in the middle of a glorious revival as of late and 'Revolutionary Ride Music' is a great example of what's to come.

Ty Dolla $ign and YG Accused of Attacking Fan in Australia

Ty Dolla $ign YGMichael Buckner / Frazer Harrison, Getty Images

Rappers Ty Dolla $ign and YG could be in major legal trouble following their recent trip to Australia. An Aussie fan is accusing the rap duo of attacking him in a nightclub over a VIP section.

According to TMZ, Ty and YG performed at Eve nightclub in Melbourne, and following their set, they wanted to relax in the VIP section. The alleged victim claims that he was already chilling in the area when the rappers and their cronies ordered everybody out. When the victim refused to leave, he was pummeled by a slew of people and chased out of the club.

The police were called but no arrests were made. Authorities are still investigating the incident.

An insider who was at the club told TMZ that Ty and YG never touched the individual and claims that the club’s security guards were the ones who beat up the victim.

There’s no word if the victim is going to pursue legal action. But it appears that Ty and YG had a great time in Aussie Land.

Nike Air Foamposite One 'Tianjin'

Nike

The Year of the Goat is upon us and Nike is out to celebrate the way they do best: with a sneaker release. The Nike Air Foamposite One gets a very visual representation of the Chinese New Year thanks to this vivid Tianjin colorway.

The foamy upper on this pair features a floral theme that focuses on the lotus flower. In case the printed images didn’t clue you in, the flower is embroidered on the heel and tongue as well. Where a pink outsole would usually stand out in the mix, this time it blends in seamlessly due to the all-encompassing theme of the shoe.

These are set to hit retailers in China on Feb. 7. Unfortunately, we aren’t sure when they’ll land in the states. Hopefully, Nike won’t leave us high and dry when it comes to these.

Jay Z to Acquire Music Streaming Company Aspiro for $56 Million

Jay ZJamie McCarthy, Getty Images

Jay Z is getting involved in the music streaming business. According to the Financial Times, the rap mogul is buying Swedish music streaming company Aspiro for $56 million.

The tech company currently runs two subscription streaming services, WiMP and TIDAL, which are available only in Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Germany and Norway. So far, it has 500,000-plus subscribers.

Project Panther Bidco, a subsidiary of S. Carter Enterprises, has secured the acquisition and is waiting for shareholder approval. A rep for the company said buying Aspiro was a move to help expand their portfolio in the technology business.

“Panther believes that the recent developments in the entertainment industry, with the migration to music and media streaming, offers great potential for increased entertainment consumption and an opportunity for artists to further promote their music,” read a statement.

Clearly, this deal will put Jay Z in competition with two of the biggest streaming services in the U.S.: Spotify and Dr. Dre’s Beats Music. So Jay will no doubt use his star power (and his Rolodex of celebrity and rap friends) to entice new followers and pull some customers away from the other streaming services.

The only downside is that no popular streaming company has yet to turn a profit. So it will be interesting to see how Hov will make money off his new acquisition.

We wish Jay Z the best of luck in his new venture.

Missy Elliott to Join Katy Perry at Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show?

Super Bowl halftime shows usually include a few surprise guests. Remember when Bruno Mars brought Red Hot Chili Peppers to the stage last year? This year seems to be no different as Missy Elliott is reportedly making a special appearance during Katy Perry’s set on Sunday (Feb. 2).

According to the AP, a source who knows what will go down for the halftime show revealed that the ‘Work It’ rapper will be performing on the field at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz this weekend. However, the NFL has yet to make any confirmations.

Missy had a featured spot on the remix of Katy’s 2011 track, ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ so that might be where she appears in her set.

When Katy spoke a press conference yesterday (Jan. 29), she dropped hints by saying that the show will include an “old school” female singer. “When you hear the first ring of the chord,” she said. “I think jaws will drop and faces will melt.”

Lenny Kravitz is also scheduled to perform as a featured guest during the halftime show.

Reebok Ventilator 'Reflective' Pack

Sneakernews

Reebok is no stranger to dropping heat and this time, they brand wants to warm us up in the dead of winter. For this drop, they make the Reebok Ventilator even more visible thanks to the use of 3M with the ‘Reflective’ Pack.

They didn’t go with the obvious decision to turn the shoe into a boot hybrid, but instead, have laced the look with a tonal reflective upper in four colors. Black, Collegiate Burgundy, Dark Green and Foggy Grey all are dressed in leather and mesh with bits of reflective material mixed in, waiting to shine when the light hits it.

The Reebok Ventilator may not be the first shoe that comes to mind when you think of snow-filled months but trust us, you want to stock up on these for when the city thaws out — unless you’re out West, where mesh is fully acceptable right now.
