Cold Chillin' Terminators, part 2 - Toasting With MC Shan

So yesterday we looked at a couple Terminators from the very beginning of Cold Chillin'. Now today let's look at a Terminata from the last days, 1994. Not counting represses and those Traffic reissues, Cold Chillin' stopped putting out music in 1996, ending with singles by their last few hanger-onners, Big Scoob and Shanté. But 1994 was kind of the last year they had a broad roster, signed new artists and still generally seemed interesting in putting out a variety of artists like a legit label. All their big Juice Crew artists had moved on, but '94 was still the year of The Genius, King Sun and Madame Starr. Essentially, it was the last year they were trying new things. And that included the first and last single by Terminata, "Get Bizi."

So most people probably have no idea who he is by this point, however Terminata wasn't a complete nobody, and in fact had worked with Cold Chillin' before. You might remember a short lived subsidiary Cold Chillin' started in 1992 (and ended in 1993) called Livin' Large Records. And one of the artists they signed to that imprint was YZ , making his post-Tuff City comeback. He'd changed his style drastically, but it was actually a really hot album. Instead of the smooth, calm flow over the more melodic Tony D production, he came back rough and ragga over some really phat, hardcore instrumentals. And the first big single off that comeback album was the song about his comeback, 1992's "The Return Of the Holy One." And if you look at the credits on that 12", the Fonta Leaf Splif Mix says it's featuring Terminator. In fact, he can be heard on the Original Flavor/ album version, too. And yep, that Terminator is the "Get Bizi" Terminata.

So, if you remember "The Return Of the Holy One," you might be saying to yourself: I thought YZ was the only guy rapping on that track. And you'd be right, and he's also the guy saying, "it's the return of the holy one, return of the holy one" over and over on the hook. But the guy doing the rugged ragga chatting in the background? That's Terminata.

And so yes, "Get Bizi" is more of a reggae record than a rappity-rap one. But it's definitely meant to fit into that mid-90s hip-hop/reggae blend that was going on. He even got an American rapper, and Juice Crew All Star, to produce and write the music for him: MC Shan . Shan had also put a couple singles out on that Livin' Large imprint - good ones, too - and was surely feeling confident making a reggae record after he turned "Informer" into one of the highest charting reggae hits since Bob Marley in 1992.

But "Get Bizi" was never going to be a big hit, and not just because Terminata wasn't as white as Snow. It's basically just really simple and repetitive. It's got a funky, old school reggae bassline and Terminata's voice sounds great once the the NY hip-hop drums kick in. But musically it's very understated and when you try to get into it, there's actually very little to the song. He has some short verses, but the hook is like 75% of the songs, where he just keeps saying "_____ get bizi 'pon the flex." It doesn't help that his verses are mixed pretty low, but I really think this was meant more as to be just a quick something for DJs rather than a song to blow up. Like a modern day "Shake It To the 61st," where they expect a DJ to just sample the line that applies to them, so like a New York DJ would cut up "New York posse get busy," and a west coast DJ could cut up "LA posse get busy," or just let the rest of the unassuming song play as filler. That probably explains why the only other version on this 12" is the Acappella.

The B-side, "Sex" is a little more of a full, lush song. It's got very New York hip-hop drums with another old school reggae-style bassline, though this time it's less prominent, played under some screechy horn samples and stuff more reminiscent of the YZ stuff. But it's still bouncier and more reggaeish than that album. If you're a fan of hip-hop styled reggae from this era, I'd say "Sex" holds up pretty well alongside the stuff that was actually getting the airplay in 1994. Again, it would never be another "Informer," but if it hadn't been buried as the B-side to a completely obscure, un-promoted 12", I think it would've gotten some spins.

I mean, personally, I would've liked it a lot better if it had a verse or two from YZ or Shan, but I'm admittedly a total hip-hop guy who listens to rap pretty exclusively. Still, though, I think this record would've lasted, at least in knowledgeable hip-hop circles, if it had a credible rapper or several alongside Terminata. I mean, lyrically, he's not saying anything anyway, just "champgagne-ah, that's what I sip." So there's definitely room to cut some of his stuff and get some names on there. But oh well.

Like The Terminators' record, Terminata's "Get Bizi" is more of an interesting detail in Cold Chillin's history than a great, must have record. But his story doesn't end here. Terminata still performs under then name of Terminator Six, and before I end this post, I think it would be interesting to take a quick look at his press bio (which can be found here, here and here), since it has a few interesting claims, including:

"Terminator Six is the first Reggae entertainer to sing a duet with a Rapper." and "the first to connect Reggae Artists and Rappers together." Well, that doesn't seem right; but let's see... Shabba Ranks' duet with Krs-One was 1992, the same year YZ and Terminator came out. So maybe Terminata was first. Super Cat with Heavy D was '92, Likkle Wicked and 2 Live Crew was '93. He did seem to be at the forefront of the trend. I mean, certainly hip-hop and reggae had blended earlier, if you think of guys like Daddy Freddy, or Shinehead being produced by Jam Master Jay . Or guys like Special Ed doing little reggae songs on their albums. But a reggae artist with a rapper? Well, Sly & Robbie's BDP album dropped in 1989, but I guess you could say they only did the music... Oh, Third World did "Forbidden Love" with Daddy-O in 1989. That's one, and it was a big single even. So yeah, no. I knew that couldn't stand up to scrutiny. Oh and wait, that Shabba Ranks/ Krs single came out in 1992, but it was already on the album which dropped in 1991.

"Terminator became the newest member of the Juice Crew which consisted of Big Daddy Kane, Biz Marke, Kool G Rap, Mc Shan." Well, he did sign to Cold Chillin', but so did plenty of non-Juice Crew artists, like Kid Capri and Too Bad To Be True. Who decides who isn't an official Juice Crew member? Marley Marl? I could see Shan telling him "you're official Juice Crew now," though.

"The Return of the Holy One by Terminator & YZ was released & Terminator was only 9 years old." Wow. So that guy in the video was only nine years old? Or somebody else was lip-syncing to his voice? He sure doesn't sound like a kid on that song...

"Terminator wrote Shabba Ranks first Grammy album for Epic records" and "Terminator Six is the Ghostwriter for Shabba Ranks first Grammy Album (Epic), Terminator Six is also responsible for connecting Shabba Ranks and KRS1 Boogie Down Productions." When he was eight?! Shabba's first Grammy was for as Raw As Ever, which dropped in 1991, a year before "The Return Of the Holy One," which we just read dropped when he was nine. So, yeah. I don't think so.

"Terminator Six is the creator of the Hip Hop Reggae Fusion," and "Terminator Six is responsible for connecting Notorious B.I.G.(Biggie Smalls) with Super Cat and enforcing the launch of P.Diddy (Puff Daddy) Bad Boy Entertainment." Oh man, I'm done. I don't even know what "enforcing the launch" means, but I think we can safely say some embellishing has been done here. I'd be interested to find out the exact 100% truth of all that. You know, I bet he meant 19 instead of 9; so it may not be a total pack of insane lies. haha

Anyway, I bet most of you guys didn't even know the Terminator from YZ's song had his own record. And he was on Cold Chillin'! Pretty interesting, huh?

ILOVEMAKONNEN's Joy Onstage Makes Up for His Shortcomings at Hype Hotel SXSW 2015 Show [EXCLUSIVE]

Joe Scarnici, Getty Images

The music of Atlanta rapper ILOVEMAKONNEN comes from a place of boundless enthusiasm. It was obvious throughout his giddy Friday afternoon set (March 20) at the Hype Hotel in Austin, Texas that he’s as much of a fan — specifically of rap and R&B — as a performer, and his deep affection for the music is what compels him to create it, regardless of his own technical limitations.

That sense of joy went a long way to compensate for Makonnen’s shortcomings during his SXSW set. He’s neither a technically proficient rapper nor a gifted singer, but he seemed giddily lost in what he was doing, making it hard not to begrudge him. More than anyone else, he recalled Biz Markie circa Goin’ Off; both share a fascination with recounting the details of their everyday life, and both share those simple stories as enthusiastically as possible.

Makonnen’s songs split firmly into two camps while onstage. There was hoarse R&B, on which Makonnen gleefully pushed against the considerable limits of his vocal range to charming effect. On “Sex, Love, Ecstasy,” he warbled the title phrase deliriously off-key, weaving over the song’s filmy, thumping production. “Too Much” was similar; as chest-collapsing bass and a twinkling, music-box melody twirled dizzily behind him. Makonnen bellowed the song’s three-note hook again and again until it started seeming like a weird religious mantra.

He was better on the straightforward rap songs, where he alternated between tough, punching, mid-range syllables and an eerie, deep-seated baritone. Like most of his songs, the majority of these consisted of about eight or 10 words repeated over and over, but it’s a testament to their strange infectiousness that they never felt tired.

On a snippet of Father’s “Look At Wrist” — the lyrics to which are simply “wrist, wrist, wrist, wrist” — he bounced merrily across the stage, hitting each word as if he was singing it for the first time. By the time he arrived at “Tuesday” — Drake was nowhere in sight — the unfiltered delight in the room had hit a fever pitch, and the crowd sang the song’s hook right back at him. All eight words of it.

Meek Mill Heads to Atlanta in 'Ice Cream Freestyle' Street Video With Rick Ross

It’s close to dusk in Atlanta and Meek Mill is spitting some fire to light up the night in this new street video for his “Ice Cream Freestyle,” which he released in January.

Shot by XXL, the visual finds the Maybach Music Group signee shooting out solid bars in an empty lot. Rick Ross accompanies the Philly native, who hides his face behind a red bandana as he spits his verses in front of a row of rusty filing cabinets.

“Fresh back home, they had to sit me down / I come back home, they talkin’ Nicki now / I feel like a drummer that hold 50 rounds / And for my walk-throughs it cost sixty pounds,” he raps over Raekwon’s classic summer anthem “Ice Cream.”

The simple clip is just a teaser until the official visual arrives in the coming weeks. Until then, Meek is keeping himself fairly busy preparing for the release of his sophomore effort, Dreams Worth More Than Money.

The 27-year-old, who was released from prison in December, will return to his hometown of Philly tomorrow night for a Homecoming concert at the Wells Fargo Arena, which is sure to feature a slew of surprise guests. His rumored girlfriend Nicki Minaj will likely join him for “Buy a Heart” and “Big Daddy” while Big Sean and A$AP Ferg could come out for “B-Boy,” the first single off his forthcoming LP.

Russell Simmons to Celebrate Hip-Hop With Broadway Musical

Russell SimmonsJamie McCarthy, Getty Images

Russell Simmons is bringing hip-hop to the Great White Way. The rap impresario is producing a new Broadway musical on the early days of hip-hop titled The Scenario.

The stage production will features rap hits from the 1980s to current times. According to the Associated Press, Simmons will produced the show along with Tony-award winning producer Scott Prisand, who created the successful Rock of Ages musical on Broadway.

“Hip-hop’s explosion was fueled by a generation with an incredible hunger to discover new ways of expression,” said Simmons in a statement. “It felt like such a natural fit to weave the best of these sounds and stories into an energetic and thrilling musical that would transport audiences through one of the most innovative artistic movements of our time.”

Hip-hop historian Dan Charnas has penned an initial draft of the show’s story. Charnas is the author of the great book The Big Payback, which chronicles the business side of rap from the creation of Sugar Hill Records to Def Jam Recordings.

The Scenario marks Simmons’ second musical following his Def Poetry Jam on Broadway in 2002, for which he won a Tony award.

However, hip-hop-inspired musicals haven’t fare so well on Broadway lately. Last year, the Tupac Shakur musical Holler If Ya Hear Me was shut down after a six-week stint. The lead producer, Eric L. Gold, said that he made a “rookie mistake” in underestimating the amount of funding needed to sustain a big production.

Russell Simmons hopes to bring The Scenario to the Broadway stage in late 2016.

10 Music Milestones From Great Black Artists

Raury Brings Humor and a Hell of a Show to Hype Hotel for SXSW 2015 [EXCLUSIVE]

Rachel Murray, Getty Images

Early in his SXSW set at Hype Hotel in Austin, Texas Friday afternoon (March 20), 18-year-old Atlanta singer Raury made the audience a promise: “You’re in for a hell of a show,” he said. “I promise you.”

He wasn’t kidding. Over the course of 30 exhilarating minutes, he delivered a set as long on riotous, roaring rock and roll as it was on pure passion and heart. His music works a familiar but effective combination, matching grinding, boisterous hard rock riffs with emotionally naked lyrics; the combination makes each song sound like a mission statement, pointed and determined and, at times, fed up.

On opener “Chariots of Fire,” he sang, “You condescend, you own the sky” before concluding “I’m done with being blind.” The song was a study in the power of dynamics, screaming guitars chasing Raury’s worked-up, insistent delivery. His run through “Higher,” originally a collaboration with the producer SBTRKT, was tense and gritty, Raury delivering taut, bullet-like syllables at a breathless, rapid clip. Later in the set, guitars hammered away like a drill press while Raury filled the empty space between the riffs with tense, agitated vocals.

He was just as effective when the music was slower. On “Cigarette Song,” his voice became lithe and fluid, snaking through feathery acoustic guitars and occasionally swelling up to fill the room. And on “Fly,” another moody, slow-burning number, he sang, “I’m afraid I’ll die… because I’m brown and young and my hair is nappy.” The words alone were piercing, but Raury’s delivery of them was devastating — he didn’t sound worried or angry so much as sorrowful and resigned. The cumulative effect was wrenching and powerful.

He also made room for a bit of wry humor. On an as-yet unreleased track, he lamented the state of modern music (“pushing it to radio, feeding it to the mind of the public”) before turning his concerns inward: “I thought of being Muslim / But life’s too short to not eat bacon.” It was a punchline, sure; but Raury sang it like he meant every word.

Songs of the Week: Jhene Aiko, Scarface and Black Milk

Bob Levey / Larry Busacca, Getty Images / YouTube

Another Friday is upon us and that means another edition of Songs of the Week, where we present three standout tracks you may have missed out on during the last seven days.

Last week’s lineup was a murderous row of talent and definitely served as one of the best editions of SOTW in recent memory. We got a dose of two tracks with the potential to run through most of the warmer months of the year, including Snoop Dogg and Charlie Wilson’s stone cold groove, “Peaches N Cream;” and Jamie Foxx’s new Chris Brown-assisted single, “You Changed Me,” which has “smash hit” written all over it.

Our picks for this week may fall a bit short in quality compared to the last, but they’re still more than deserving of a listen. Featuring new heat from Black Milk, Jhene Aiko and newcomer Mayalino — who phones in Pusha T and Scarface to finish the job — we’re sure these cuts will suffice and become instant additions to your playlist.

Detroit native Black Milk returns with his latest one-off, "I Guess," in celebration of his upcoming Play Like Hell tour, which kicked off Thursday night in Dallas. This song is the first release since his last LP, If There's a Hell Below, touched down a year ago. "I Guess" is a mid-tempo number that finds the Swiss Army Knife of a talent giving us some some airtight bars. "I tell them bad days goodbye, adios / The kid with the knotty 'fro and the snotty nose/ All of my homies got high cause of being low / Wasn't no Jordan's IVs getting copped or designer clothes, never," he raps, toying with the beat, which he also cooked up himself.

"You can say I'm putting on, put my heart in every song, I guess / N----s tryna be the best, wouldn't go for nothing less, you can say I'm in the zone, I guess," Black rhymes on the hook. He's focused on going for the gusto, grabbing the third slot on this week's lineup.

"Living Room Flow"

Jhene Aiko

Jhene Aiko comes in at the No. 2 spot this week with her new release, "Living Room Flow." Produced by Fisticuffs, Aiko decides to unleash this unreleased track for our listening pleasure and we're lucky she did -- we may have missed out on some dope R&B and that would've been a shame. "I'm so glad you called right on time / You must have just read my mind," she purrs. Aiko has lust on the brain and is looking for a little sexual healing from her lover, using her breathy vocals to get her point across.

"Kilo Champ"

Mayalino Feat. Pusha T & Scarface

Houston rapper Mayalino seems to have quite a few friends in high places. He's able to get heavyweight spitters like Pusha T and Scarface, which is one hell of a feat for a relative unknown, and the end product is enough to make you O.D. "36-0, kilo champ, I'm undefeated / 36 them O's, triple beam, that's underneath it / Dope all in my flows, day one, you best believe it," Pusha T raps, wasting no time catching wreck. He turns in a monstrous verse and shows us why he's regarded as a top tier lyricist in the game.

Mayalino comes through with a steady verse of his own. "I'm from the south, talking crack in our mouths / Put that gold all in our mouth, put that pistol right in 'yo mouth / Whatchu say? / You ain't selling bricks, you ain't popping clips, you ain't buying whips / You ain't got no chain, you ain't got no watch, you a p---- bitch, I live this s---," he delivers before Scarface takes it home with his closing 16. "Undefeated in dope talk, run up talking that s--- bitch, you hoes to get broke off / I been selling that dope soft, raw as f--- with that white bitch / I get bread in a drop head, shoe-boxes of that life s---," Face spits, blessing his young H-Town comrade with a verse of uncut D-Boy talk. This helps Mayalino grab the top spot of the week.

Lil Wayne Puts Drake on Blast in Tell-All Book for Sleeping With His Girlfriend

Ronald Martinez, Getty Images

Lil Wayne may have a close relationship with his Young Money signee Drake but that isn’t stopping him from spilling secrets about their friendship.

Weezy is apparently shopping around a tell-all book, according to TMZ. Tha Carter V creator has sent the book proposal to several publishers, who have shown interest in the project due to one salacious section.

The part in Wayne’s book that will likely get a lot of attention deals with Drake sleeping with his ex-girlfriend.

Lil Tunechi reportedly reveals that when he was locked up in New York’s Rikers Island on a gun charge in 2010, Drizzy came to visit him and said that he had sex with his girl. “Yeah, it’s true,” the New Orleans MC wrote of Drake’s confession. “‘Don’t f— with her like that ’cause I did f— her.’”

Wayne shares some pretty honest feelings in the tome. “This is the type of s—- that a man never wants to find out when he’s locked up. Or maybe so, ’cause only God knows what I would have done if I wasn’t locked up right now,” he writes.

He also says that his ex-girlfriend slept with the Toronto spitter one day before Wayne met her. Weezy admitted that he felt instant sadness upon hearing the news, which caused him to stay in his jail cell all day.

“I woke up feeling f—ed up about the f—ed up day that I had,” Wayne pens. “Finding out that she f—ed Drake was the absolute worst thing I could’ve ever found out. As a man, honestly, that s— hurt and not because it was Drake, it could have been any man. It would’ve hurt the same.”

No word yet on how close we are to reading Wayne’s book, but when it’s released, it won’t be a surprise if it hits the New York Times best sellers list.

Suge Knight Collapses in Court After Judge Sets $25 Million Bail [VIDEO]

Suge Knight‘s health is quickly deteriorating as he faces murder charges for a fatal hit-and-run. The former Death Row Records co-founder collapsed in a Los Angeles courtroom after a judge set his bail at $25 million during a hearing Friday afternoon (March 20).

In a video of the incident, provided by TMZ, court officials are shown coming to Knight’s aid, rubbing him on the back as he lays motionless in a chair. An ambulance reportedly arrived at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital.

NBC Los Angeles reporter Patrick Healy was at the scene and shared news of Knight’s collapse through his Twitter and Instagram accounts. “#Suge Knight collapsed in court moments after hearing reconvened,” he wrote. “#Suge Knight attorney Matt Fletcher says Knight hit his head on chair when collapsed, went unconscious. Believes related to diabetes, lack of food.”

Fletcher states that his client wasn’t given his medication and was sweating profusely in court before he fell unconscious. “He was dripping sweat, like someone poured a bucket of water on him,” he told NBC. “He wiped the sweat off his head and said, ‘I haven’t had my medication.’”

During the hearing, which was initially postponed because Knight missed a transport bus from jail to court, the judge ruled that the rap mogul must prove that any money used to pay for bail came from legitimate sources.

Details regarding Suge Knight’s health are currently unavailable.

Migos Compare Themselves to OutKast, Fans React to 'Disrespect'

MigosAlberto E. Rodriguez, Getty Images

Migos have been tagged as this generation’s Beatles, which is preposterous enough, but the Georgia rap trio are now comparing themselves to another illustrious group — OutKast.

In an interview with Paper magazine, the “Fight Night” rappers named their musical influence including Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne while putting them in the same league as Andre 3000 and Big Boi.

“We kind of like the new Outkast. They’re comparing us to the Beatles. They’re comparing us to legendary people,” said Quavo. “We didn’t grow up listening to them but we knew of these people. We just wanted to be in that same name bracket. The people we grew up watching and listening to — Outkast, Gucci Mane, Hot Boys, Lil Wayne, Master P — all that type of stuff, we took those styles and made it our own.”

“We like the Transformers, we come together from different scenes,” adds Takeoff.

Of course, rap fans rolled their eyes when they caught wind of Migos’ proclamations and expressed their shock and awe on Twitter.

“Migos compared themselves to OutKast… thats disrespectful,” tweeted one commenter. Another fan wrote, Migos really ain’t say they were the new outkast…I know yall just trolling.”

We’ll see if Migos are truly the heir apparent to OutKast when they drop their debut album Y.R.N.: The Album on June 16 via Quality Control Music/300. The collection features guest appearances from Meek Mill, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown.

Akron, Ohio’s golden boy may have returned to bring some glory back to his city but the real testament to his hometown dedication has been his sneakers. LeBron James’ latest Nike colorway is a well-done tribute to Akron’s history as one of the world’s top rubber manufacturers.

Bounce has a preview of the Nike LeBron 12 EXT Rubber City, which is a jarring shoe at first look. The sneaker’s upper is covered in knobby treads, much like that of a dirt bike tire. In another fun twist, the foam portions of the upper are covered in suede for a texturally rich look, making it more than just a black shoe. The iced outsole is the perfect finishing touch for a very tough take on LeBron’s 12th signature sneaker.

Details regarding this sneaker’s release are pretty light for now, but it’s believed that they could drop over in Asia first. Either way, they are set for a March 21 release date so you should start tracking down a pair now.

Pharrell Speaks Out on 'Blurred Lines' Verdict: 'It Kills Creativity'

A week after being found guilty in the “Blurred Lines” trial, Pharrell Williams finally speaks out about the jury’s $7.4 million verdict that he, along with Robin Thicke, must pay to the Marvin Gaye estate.

As we previously reported, the court felt that there were similarities between Thicke’s song, which Pharrell produced, and Gaye’s 1977 tune “Got to Give It Up.” The verdict certainly has made songwriters and producers a little nervous. Music experts believe the ruling could open up a pandora’s box of lawsuits over “genre and feel” instead of legitimate infringement.

Pharrell, who is obviously not “Happy” with the jury’s decision, feels it will hamper creativity when it comes to producing art.

“The verdict handicaps any creator out there who is making something that might be inspired by something else,” he told The Financial Times (quotes via Rolling Stone). “This applies to fashion, music, design… anything. If we lose our freedom to be inspired, we’re going to look up one day and the entertainment industry as we know it will be frozen in litigation. This is about protecting the intellectual rights of people who have ideas.”

“Everything that’s around you in a room was inspired by something or someone,” he added. “If you kill that, there’s no creativity.”

Earlier this week, the Gaye family filed additional motions to “correct” the jury’s verdict. They now want all parties that were involved in the production and distribution of “Blurred Lines” to pay up as well. Rapper T.I. and several record labels, including Pharrell’s Star Trak Entertainment, were listed in the new documents.

The Gaye family maintains that they are not trying to stop the sale and distribution of the song, but rather negotiate an agreement so that Marvin Gaye can get credited on the song and share the copyright and future royalties.

The case may not be entirely over yet as both Thicke and Pharrell’s attorneys have not filed an appeal. The Grammy-winning producer tells FT that “We’re working out our next steps right now.”
