As the hip-hop world continues to mourn the loss of A$AP Yams, who passed away in January, we finally get some more answers behind the cause of the A$AP Mob founder’s sudden death.

On Monday evening (March 19) via his Twitter account, New York Times journalist Jon Caramanica shared the reason behind Yams’ untimely death. He relayed the news that the coroner in charge of examining the music mogul’s death concluded that he had died of an accidental drug overdose.

“Sad news: Chief Medical Examiner calls ASAP Yams’s death accident caused by acute mixed drug intoxication (incl. opiates & benzodiazepine),” Caramanica wrote.

While members of the A$AP Mob initially denied rumors of a drug overdose, many fans and members of the press had their doubts given the New York native’s history of drug abuse and stints in rehab.

Born Steven Rodriguez, Yams was a fixture in the New York City rap scene, namely Harlem. He is credited with grooming A$AP Rocky into a budding star, as well as being one of the most charismatic music men of modern times, humoring his followers on social media and Tumblr with his unique, yet insightful takes on everything from the latest music to life in general.

A$AP Yams may be gone, but he is not forgotten and continues to be a beaming light shining down on the A$AP Mob and the hip-hop community as a whole.
