Bobby Womack Dead at 70

Bobby WomackStuart C. Wilson, Getty Images

The music world has lost another legend just days after Casey Kasem’s passing. Soul singer Bobby Womack passed away earlier today of unknown causes. He was 70 years old.

A representative for Womack’s label, XL Recordings, confirmed his death to Rolling Stone.

Womack was a renowned soul legend who created music for seven decades. Despite his health issues, including the early stages of the Alzheimer’s Disease and a successful battle with colon cancer, he was making a comeback. Womack was working on his 28th album, ‘The Best Is Yet to Come,’ before his death. The last album he released was 2012′s ‘The Bravest Man in the Universe.’

The Cleveland, Ohio native’s lasting legacy isn’t just his longevity in the music industry. His natural talent shined through his distinctive voice and the passion with which he sang. From the grandiosity of ‘Across 110th Street‘ to his ecstatic howl on Gorillaz’s ‘Stylo‘ to classics like ‘If You Think You’re Lonely Now,’ the singer represented the soul genre like no other.

Multiple artists and music heads paid their respects to the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Read what they had to say about the legend below.

One such option is this “Reflective Camo” colorway of the model that features a striated upper and a tiger camo feeling tonal print. The sneaker is set to release in both green and black and based on these early images it will not disappoint one bit.

Take a long sip of the two images we have and chill on them for a second while we figure out exactly when they are releasing. Hopefully it will be before the summer is up.

Ice-T's Grandson Arrested for Killing Roommate

Ice-TSlaven Vlasic, Getty Images

Ice-T‘s grandson is at the center of a story all too familiar on the ‘Law & Order: SVU’ set. Elyjah Marrow, 19, accidentally shot and killed his roommate, Daryus Johnson, in an apartment they shared in Marietta, Ga., earlier this week.

On Tuesday (June 24), Marrow, who previously appeared on Ice-T’s reality television series, ‘Ice Loves Coco,’ was apparently playing around with a handgun when it went off and a bullet struck Johnson, TMZ reports. He was transported to the WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Georgia, where he was later pronounced dead.

As a result of Marrow’s actions, he was charged with involuntary manslaughter. In addition, he faces possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of firearm in the commission of a felony and reckless conduct charges.

“Marrow was not using proper firearms safety when handling the gun,” Officer David Baldwin told The Marietta Daily Journal. “That reckless handling of the firearm is what led to Johnson being accidentally shot and eventually killed.”

He is currently being held in the Cobb County jail without bond.

Ice-T has not issued a statement about the incident yet.

Angel Haze Opens Up About Depression, Family and Relationship with Ireland Baldwin

Angel HazeValerie Macon, Getty Images

Angel Haze has clearly been making a name for herself with the EP ‘New York’ and this year’s LP, ‘Dirty Gold.’ With the spotlight in her direction, there is still a bit of mystery to the Detroit-bred rapper. However, she recently opened up about a number of topics regarding her family, depression and her relationship.

Although she’s admitted to dating model Ireland Baldwin, Angel claims the media still calls them best friends, an occurrence that irritates the rhymer.

“… If we were two guys, it’d be insane, negatively insane with the attention,” she told the Independent. “With us, it’s all being very positive. The media are like, ‘Oh they’re so cute, they’re best friends.’ An interracial gay couple, I mean that’s just weird for America right now. We f— and friends don’t f—. I have never f—ed one of my friends. Once I see you in that way, it doesn’t happen. But we f— and it’s crazy and that’s weird to say because I think about it in terms of an audience reading it and them thinking, ‘What the hell?’ But it happens.”

But even though Angel is happy with Ireland, she wasn’t always that way. She’s cut off ties with her relatives — making her feel depressed — due to a bad family situation and being sexually abused as a child.

“I don’t have any family,” she said. “I feel like an episode of ‘The Lost Boys’ or something. I have no parents, no anything. I’ve got a little sister but I can’t see her because my mum has her, which means basically I don’t have a little sister. There’s me, then there’s the rest of the world. Sometimes I think, ‘What the hell?’ You’ve got to be pretty self-aware for that s— otherwise you get swallowed in depression.”

The negative feelings were just so strong that it’s driven her to dark periods. “I’ve been sad enough to be crazy, to cry and do s— that no one should ever do,” Angel revealed.

While she’s gone through some tough times, Angel said that she is much better and just thinks that her life isn’t so bad compared to others. And of course, there’s Ireland.

“When you find love it definitely amends your perspective on certain things,” she said. “I was dating a guy I really liked about a year ago and being around him and realizing so many things about myself totally made me hate the traditional ideas of what a relationship should be, of what romance should be. You go out and you’re searching for this utopian feeling, butterflies, that thing where you can’t stop thinking about them. It doesn’t have to be so overwhelming.”

Eminem and Busta Rhymes may have a banger for the summer in store for hip-hop heads. And luckily, you don’t have to wait too long to hear it.

Just before 11PM last night (June 26), Busta took to Twitter to announce that ‘Calm Down,’ the collaboration between him and Em, will be dropping on July 1.

This isn’t a complete surprise as producer Scoop Deville told VladTV of the collaboration earlier this year. Busta soon followed and talked a bit more about the track. “I’ve got a six-minute record with Eminem that sounds like we are respectfully trying to battle each other in a way that you probably never heard us battle in our entire careers on a record,” the New York City native said in an interview. “So it’s lot of real incredibly golden moments for us on this project.”

But this isn’t the first time they’ve joined forces. Busta and Em teamed up in the studio to record ‘I’ll Hurt You’ in 2006 — unfortunately it was never commercially released.

Angela Bassett Discusses Directing Whitney Houston Biopic

Angela Bassett Whitney HoustonKevin Winter / Larry Busacca, Getty Images

When news broke that Angela Bassett will direct the biopic on Whitney Houston, fans and critics alike wondered how the late pop icon’s life would be portrayed in the movie.

Bassett recently opened up to Entertainment Weekly about the project, including her choice of casting and the family’s involvement in the film.

The 55-year-old director says the film is a personal project for her. Bassett worked with Houston on the set of the 1995 film ‘Waiting to Exhale.’ Much like the world, she was deeply affected by the tragic news of the singer’s death in 2012.

“I obviously had worked with Whitney and, you know, just fell in love with her as the rest of the world did,” she said. “And when this opportunity was brought my way, it really was something I couldn’t say no to. I felt that if I said no and let it pass, I could imagine having a great deal of regret, you know? I wanted to tell a story about a beautiful sista, which is of course an opportunity for me to grow as a woman and as an artist in many expected and unexpected ways.”

Bassett says the film will explore Houston’s life and her relationship with Bobby Brown. In telling their story, the issue of drug use will be examined. “We can’t tell their story without that,” said Bassett. “It’s involved and I hope we can unpack it gently.”

As for casting, Yaya DaCosta, of ‘America’s Next Top Model’ fame, will portray Houston in the biopic. There have been reports that Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, wanted to play her mother in the movie. Bassett said she was never in consideration for the part.

“I did not think about casting her and probably for a number of reasons, you know,” she said. “One being that she’s not an actress. I know she’s acted here and there… but she’s not an actress and acting is a craft. It’s an attempt to illuminate the complexities of human behavior and life. And this is a very fast-paced schedule; we have just 21 days to tell this story. It’s more than just saying lines and turning the light on. You have to drive the story — there’s a technical aspect.”

The actor-turned-filmmaker also confirmed that the Houston family is not involved in the project. According to TMZ, Pat Houston, the singer’s former manager, is exploring legal options to block the film. Bassett says that the Houston family not supporting the film won’t hurt it’s creation.

“I really just want to tell a story about a boy and a girl who fell in love. And these are the words and this is the place, and these are are the people on the outside,” she said. “And I want to be as honest as I can about about doing that.”

“We care about the humanity of this woman and man, telling their story,” she continued. “I know it was going to be told, so I’m so humbled that it was put in my hands to tell it. So I’m going to protect it to the best of my abilities.”

Interestingly, Bassett also revealed that Houston’s tragic death will not be explored in the movie.

“That’s one of the things I do appreciate about the story at least, with this first story about her. We’re not interested in dragging her life again through, you know, the muck,” she explained. “She had to play out her choices, and the consequences of them, in a very hot, glaring spotlight, but we’re not interested in dragging that through again.”

The Whitney Houston biopic is expected to air on Lifetime in 2015.

Lil Wayne Is Ready for a Fight on 'Krazy'

After announcing he’ll deliver two albums in 2014, including the highly anticipated, ‘Tha Carter V,’ Lil Wayne debuts a new track, ‘Krazy.’

The rapper teased fans with the song via his web series, ‘Weezy Wednesdays,’ but finally released the full track last night (June 26) with a special introduction by Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul.

Produced by Infamous, the track’s bouncy beat gets heavy with the introduction of subtle explosion sounds and sythns, which add another layer to the rhythm. The MC serves a catchy hook of “You so krazy,” and doesn’t hold back with his cockiness on this one.

“Watch everybody I toast with / Kill everybody you close with / Just don’t stick your nose in my bulls— / Because I close it with a clothespin,” he spits on the mic.

This isn’t the first time Wayne has dropped new material for his upcoming project. He also released the Drake-assisted ‘Believe Me’ and ‘D’usse’ via his ‘Weezy Wednesdays’ series.

Before Cool V Was Biz Markie's Main Man

This one reminds me a lot of that Brothers Unique record, for some obvious superficial ways... It's an old school, PSA-like message song about the importance of education by a rapper who only put out one record. And it's produced by genre outsiders who usually make non-hip-hop records. Plus it's on Sutra Records.

But Abdul Tariq's record is also quite different. This time, it's not made by a bunch of jazz guys but disco guys. Specifically, it's produced by Bert Reid of Crown Heights Affair. And it's several years more modern, 1986, so it's got a much more electronic feel. Spacey sound effects, loud handclaps and multiple keyboard lines. It's super upbeat and happy, basically, with girls singing "got to get your education!" and Tariq joyfully shouting "pop pop pa-pa-pa-pop pow!" When he's not rapping to tell you to "keep your eyes in your books." What he lacks in skills he makes up for in sheer enthusiasm. And during all this, there's also a male singer on a funkier, almost Keith Sweat tip going off in the background.

The record label credits the R&B girls as Jamaica Girls, and that's not just a fun way to describe the neighborhood girls he brought into the studio to sing for him; they were an established disco trio who put out several records throughout the 80s. And they actually play a big part on this seven and a half minute song. They don't have a lot of lyrics, but they're singing more "pa-pop pa-pop"s and "educaaaayshun,"s through the whole song, even while Tariq steps away from the mic for breaks. The male singer isn't credited... perhaps it's Tariq himself. That would be a little odd, since he almost duets with him at one point; but it's certainly possible. And the keyboards are provided by Jeff Smith, who's apparently better known as a saxophonist. But here he's playing futuristic keyboard riffs.

But for us hip-hop heads, the most interesting name in the credits is easily Cutmaster Cool "V," who's credited with scratching on the B-side. Yeah, he's not on the main song. But on they have a Dub Mix and Instrumental on the reverse, and he scratches on both of those. I mean, you'd expect the Instrumental to be exactly like the A-side, minus the voices, but it's not. It's a couple minutes shorter and.... features Cool V.

And it's certainly the same guy. I mean, I could accept two "Cool V"s existing in this world as just a coincidence; but both calling themselves "Cutmaster Cool V?" It's gotta be the same guy. And this is 1986, the same year Biz Markie debuted on wax beat-boxing for Roxanne Shanté. In fact, the Dub mix features a small sampling of human beat-boxing, which could actually be a clip of the Biz.

So yeah, the Dub Mix is the more hip-hop oriented of the two. It doesn't have most of the lyrics from the A-side, naturally, but it does have some vocals by Tariq unique to this version. And it has Cool V's cuts and that that really brief beatboxing moment I mentioned.

The instrumental has some scratching, too; but it's just for a little bit. Despite being called the "Instrumental," it's got a good deal of vocals, including a lot of singing by the Jamaica Girls. The most notable unique element of this version is that it has a huge saxophone part. Nobody's given credit for that on the label, but it's surely got to be Smith, right?

Anyway, this whole record is fun. It almost feels like one giant song, rather than three versions of one song; and that's the way I'd recommend listening to this one. Just rock it all the way through like a huge monster jam. Lyrically it's pretty light and preachy, but it's just so hyper you won't even notice. It's too bad Tariq didn't make any other records, because I'm sure they would've been fun. But I guess Reid had his non-hip-hop career to get back to, and of course Cool V was called away to make all those classic Biz records; and we wouldn't want anything to have stood in the way of those. So this winds up being just an entertaining one-off, as well as an interesting historical footnote.

Kendrick Lamar's Life and Career Explored in New York Times Magazine

Kendrick LamarEthan Miller, Getty Images

Ever since Kendrick Lamar released his debut album, ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city,’ and delivered his blistering verse on ‘Control,’ he’s been the most talked-about artist in hip-hop.

The New York Times Magazine recently published an expansive story on the Top Dawg Entertainment artist, calling him “Hip-Hop’s Newest Old-School Star.”

Among the highlights in the piece include his reasoning for creating the ‘Control’ verse, in which he lyrically challenged other rappers and proclaimed he’s the “King of New York.”

Lamar feels that the rap game has lost its competitive edge and he wants to shake things up a bit. Mission accomplished.

“Everybody that’s in the industry has lost their edge,” he said. “There’s really no aggression. You gotta say things particular, and everything is so soft.”

Some other interesting tidbits in the article include Lamar’s interaction with his girlfriend, Whitney Alford, who sasses him for being cheap.

Elsewhere in the profile, Lamar’s upbringing is explored as the 27-year-old rapper talked about his parents moving from Chicago to Compton, Calif., during the height of the crack epidemic in the late 1980s.

“My pop did what he had to do,” he says of his father’s street activities. “We had good birthdays and good Christmases. I can’t complain.”

Lamar, who stuttered in high school, got into rapping so he could mack to the girls. “That is the No. 1 motivation when you are in ninth grade,” he quips.

He also speaks highly of Kanye West, who specifically requested him to join his Yeezus tour in 2013. And he wasn’t going to take “no” for answer. So much so that the G.O.O.D. Music leader got K.Dot a studio tour bus so he could record on the road.

“It’s a different kind of thrill when an actual artist asks you, when Kanye asks you,” he says emphasizing the enormity of the opportunity. “Now I know he’s really interested in what I do. It was dope to have the actual headliner of the show want my show to be just as good as his.”

Fellow rappers also speak fondly of Lamar — among them Eminem, whom he has collaborated and toured with on many occasions. On the discussion of Lamar’s fantastic album, ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city,’ the Detroit rhymer found it to be a brilliant listen from beginning to end.

“We’ve been in Compton before,” he said. “But the way that Kendrick did it was so different… the album is crafted from front to back, the way each song ties into each other — to me that’s genius.”

Lamar appears to be cautious of not letting the fame and adulation get into his head. The rapper even admits that he’s horrible when it comes to accepting compliments. However, he feels he must not lose sight of the bigger picture.

“I don’t want to be something that just comes and goes,” he says.

The two haven't made it known that there was a fallout, which has led fans to wonder what happened between the two friends.

Menace has also continued to support Game's affiliates Rich Gang and Young Money.
