No Indictment in Eric Garner Chokehold Case Causes Sadness in Hip-Hop Community
A grand jury in New York has reached a decision that no charges will be filed against a New York police officer in the chokehold death of Eric Garner.
The announcement comes less than two weeks after a grand jury in Ferguson, Mo., declined to bring charges against a white police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown.
In Garner’s case, he was arrested on July 17 outside of a convenience store for allegedly selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. A bystander recorded the entire incident on video, which went viral on the Internet.
In the mobile phone video, Officer Daniel Pantaleo is shown putting Garner, who had asthma, in an apparent chokehold, which is banned by the New York City Police Department. The 43-year-old man can be heard shouting, “I can’t breathe!” before losing consciousness.
Three minutes into the video, Garner is lying on the sidewalk motionless as police wait for an ambulance to arrive. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Eric Garner’s family attorney told the media, “The family is very upset and disappointed that these officers are not getting indicted for any criminal conduct.”
The hip-hop community is in a state of shock following the verdict. Several artists went on Twitter to express their frustrations on the injustices that were doled out in both the Mike Brown and Eric Garner cases.

T-Pain Reads Shel Silverstein's 'Where the Sidewalk Ends' [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]
Think of some of your favorite rappers and their knack for storytelling. Slick Rick’s ‘Mona Lisa,’ Biggie’s ‘I Got a Story to Tell,’ Eminem’s ‘Stan,’ J. Cole’s ‘Lost Ones’ and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst’ are just a few of the songs that showcase how adept these guys are at painting lyrical portraits.
While an artist like T-Pain is known more for his Auto-Tune delivery and liquor-guzzling odes, the self-proclaimed “Nappy Boy” taps into his inner narrator on the candid effort ‘Stoicville,’ a song featured on his forthcoming LP, ‘Stoicville: The Phoenix.’
The rhymer trades in his party anthems for rhymes with substance, detailing his rise to fame, the struggles he faced when no one believed in his vision and his relationship with his father. He paints a vivid picture of an artist who had to lose himself to find out where he was actually heading. The somber moments have inspired him. T-Pain is looking past the end of the road, just like the characters on the front of Shel Silverstein’s classic children’s book, ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends.’
The collection of poetry written and illustrated by Silverstein should be pretty familiar — it’s been a staple in school libraries and bookstores since 1974. The 30-year-old has even read it to his children, as “weird” as he admits some of the work is at times. Just like he’s done with his kids, T-Pain practices the art of storytelling with The Boombox by reading four poems from the tome: ‘Ourchestra,’ ‘No Difference’ ‘My Rules’ and ‘Land of Happy’
Sit down for story time with T-Pain and find out which selection he thinks is “ominous as f—.”

Rozay comes through and a drops a luxury rap filled with promises of treating his girl to the glamorous life.

With Chance the Rapper and the Social Experiment’s ‘Surf’ on the way, the Chi-town rapper and his conglomerate of musicians are inviting fans into their world with ‘SoXDay: A Day in the Life of Chance the Rapper & the Social Experiment.’
‘SoxDay,’ an 11-minute short film directed by Chance’s friend Austin Vesley, follows Chance and the Social Experiment for 23 hours to showcase what goes on when they’re away from the stage.
In the visual, which features Donnie Trumpet, Peter Cottontale, Stix, Nate Fox and Macie Stewart, the crew kick back and have a good time from vibing to Michael Jackson’s ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ on the tour bus to skateboarding and checking out a White Sox game. Of course, there’s soundchecks, green room champagne popping and the MC holding it down on the mic included.
The new intimate, fan-friendly film is the latest indie offering from Chance, who’s been making a name for himself selling out tours and dropping gems all without the backing of a major label.
‘Surf’ serves as the follow-up to the 21-year-old rhymer’s 2013 album, ‘Acid Rap.’
