Nelly Urges Peace In Ferguson, Gov. Nixon Declares Curfew

NellyMike Coppola, Getty Images

Many rappers have spoken out about the unrest in Ferguson, Mo., after the shooting death of 18-year-old teenager Michael Brown. But the biggest rap artist to come out of St. Louis — Nelly — is urging citizens near his hometown to protest in peace and not riot and loot in their community.

“I understand the frustration, but we have to strategize before we overreact,” he told TMZ. “We don’t get no do-over on s— like this, so we have to do it right the first time.”

“Ain’t nothing happen no different that hasn’t been happening,” he continued. “At the end of the day, we should have waited to strategize first and take all the right steps to organize.”

In response to the tragedy of Michael Brown, Nelly has created a scholarship for the youth in Ferguson. So far, Kevin Hart, T.I. and Charlotte Hornets b-baller Al Jefferson have promised to donate $15,000 a year in scholarships to teens awarded by the Brown family.

Props to Nelly for stepping up and trying to make a change in the Ferguson community in light of recent events.

Meanwhile, Missouri governor Jay Nixon and Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson have declared a state of emergency in Ferguson, Mo. They also issued a curfew from midnight until 5AM, beginning tonight (Aug. 16).

However, some community leaders expressed concerned of how the curfew is going to be enforced.

“In the morning this community will rise with the sun to renew its quest for justice,” Nixon said (quotes courtesy of NBC News). We won’t enforce it with trucks, we won’t enforce it with tear gas. We will communicate, ‘it’s time to go home.”

Nevertheless, community activists are angry that people’s rights are being denied and now their movements are being restricted with the nighttime curfew.

The protests surrounding Michael Brown’s shooting continued on Friday (Aug. 15) although it was marred by small outbreaks of looting at various businesses. Although there was peaceful protest 24 hours prior, tensions ran high last night following the release of the name Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot Brown. Then Ferguson police released a video of Brown allegedly robbing a convenience store that took place before his death, which was met with immediate backlash.

Activists questioned the Ferguson police department’s motive behind releasing the video, and Brown’s family also express outrage at the police tarnishing their late son’s reputation.

Meanwhile, back at the press conference, Cpt. Johnson said that 40 FBI agents have been assigned to the Michael Brown case and are going door-to-door talking to residents who might have information about the shooting.

“Tonight we will enforce that curfew,” he said. “We won’t enforce it with trucks. We won’t enforce it with arms. We will communicate.”

“We will survive this,” he added. “We will make a change.”

Is Beyonce planning another collaborative coup? Reports are surfacing that Rihanna has team up with Queen Bey on a remix of ‘Blow’ from her visual self-titled album.

Digital Spy is reporting that the R&B superstars have paired up on a ‘Blow’ remix after the website discovered the Bejan singer’s name is registered in the ASCAP database under the song.

Although Rihanna’s name is spelled incorrectly in the listing, her name is also incorrect for several tracks in the ASCAP database.

Nevertheless, if the reports are true, this will be the third remix that Beyonce has done for her album. The first being Kanye West’s ‘Drunk in Love’ remix followed by the Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Flawless’ remix.

In the meantime, Rihanna is busy touring with Eminem on their Monster tour. The dynamic duo will be performing tonight (Aug. 16) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Top Five Songs From Organized Konfusion's Album 'Stress: The Extinction Agenda'

Elektra Records If you were to ask the average fan to list off their favorite rap duos of all time, chances are it would be a while before the names Pharoahe Monch and Prince Poetry (aka Prince Po) would come up. But to those in the know, the two rappers that make up Organized Konfusion are formidable emcees on the microphone.

While their self-titled debut LP flew under the radar, the group’s second offering, ‘Stress: The Extinction Agenda,’ would prove to be their defining album. In 1994, the resurgence in quality East Coast rap grew and Organized Konfusion more than stood out. OK delivered one of the most cohesive and acclaimed projects of that year.

The collection has more than stood the test of time and is regarded as an undisputed classic. Today (Aug. 16), marks the 20th anniversary of the hip-hop masterpiece, which graced the Walkman’s of hip-hop junkies worldwide back when it was released in 1994.

To commemorate the LP’s 20th anniversary, the Boombox went through the arduous task of handpicking the album’s five best tracks. Enjoy.

"Crush, build, destroy, stress!" With that simple, yet powerful phrase, Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po kick off 'Stress: Extinction Agenda.' On the Buckwild-produced song, Monch rhetorically asks, "Why do you choose to mimic these wack emcees? / Why do you choose to listen to R&B? / Why must you believe that something is fact just because it's played on radio 20 times a day?" Addressing such social topics like racial profiling immediately lets you know that Organized Konfusion aren't concerned with radio spins, just hardcore, no-frills hip-hop. Also, the mid-song interlude with the crew attempting to catch a cab as a black man in Manhattan is very true-to-life and gives the song an added dimension that takes it over the top.

Monch goes for dolo on the solo cut, 'Thirteen.' Toying with the Buckwild-produced track, he turns the beat into his own lyrical gymnasium, dropping his patented brand of monkey bars and running roughshod all over the track. "La-Di-Da, I flip it La-Di, live at a mardi gras, not even at a party / Give me bacardi...I smoke blunts / Stunts, I wanna humps / Chumps, I wanna pump em' full of [lead]," he raps. Along with an ill sample of ESG's 'UFO,' the song may cause you to catch Carpal tunnel syndrome from repeatedly hitting the rewind button.

Monch and Po detail their respective sour encounters with scandalous women on the rap ballad 'Why.' Monch gets his heart broken by his two-timing shorty, while Po goes through the motions of casual dating. From the shady voice-mails to gold-digging hoochies, the duo wax poetic about something most every guy can relate to: being toyed with by a female. Producer Buckwild comes through again working his magic with an infectious sample of Brian Auger's Oblivion Express' 'Light My Fire,' which anchors the song.

Monch and Po bring in fellow Queens rapper O.C. and Q-Tip for a little added reinforcement on the indelible free-for-all, 'Let's Organize.' Powered by a sample of Patrice Rushen's 'Kickin' Back,' each artist comes through with a superb verse, bouncing off of each others flows without missing a beat.

A few years before Nas recorded his acclaimed 'I Gave You Power,' Monch and Po had already executed the concept of personifying a traveling bullet on the chilling track 'Stray Bullet.' Produced by Po, himself, the track see's everyone from innocent children to house party patrons affected from the collateral damage. Weaving intricate tales of the bullet's journey, this classic song has become, arguably, their signature tune on the album. Monch would continue with the concept turning it into a trilogy with 'When The Guns Draw' and 'Damage,' respectively.

Raf Simons x adidas Bounce 'Camo'

Wish

These days Raf Simons is as down with adidas as Joseph Simmons (aka Reverend Run) is and he’s been in the lab yet again with the trefoil. This time the fashion designer is offering up the not too often seen adidas Bounce in a ‘camo’ colorway and if you’d like a better look at them feel free to walk this way.

The adidas Bounce’s upper is given black leather trim with a camo print base beneath and that sets the overall tone for this lux runner that isn’t meant for running. A very subtle 3M three stripes branding on the heel tab combined with a red outsole under the bounce coils finishes things off.

These are available now at select retailers including Wish in Atlanta who has them in stock now for $595 a pair. What? We told you they weren’t made for running.

Frank Ocean Weighs in on Ferguson Issue in Thoughtful Tumblr Post

Frank OceanJamie McCarthy, Getty Images

Frank Ocean has been known as one of the quieter prominent figures in the music industry. He’s also known for being thoughtful, and that shines through his recent Tumblr post. The R&B crooner raised some questions about the Ferguson situation in his short write-up.

Many musicians have weighed in on the crisis, focusing on the violation of human rights and the lack of justice. Ocean, however, focuses on media rhetoric and its facade. Specifically, he examines the image of Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and the perhaps not-so-coincidental presence of African Americans around him. It implies that he’s for the Black community, but is he really?

He also raises another question. There’s been all this examination into Michael Brown’s life, but how come we barely know anything about the officer? Read Ocean’s loaded questions below.
