Chart-topping artists Beyonce and John Legend were among the big winners in the music categories at the 2014 NAACP Image Awards on Saturday (Feb. 22) in Los Angeles.
The R&B queen won a trophy for Outstanding Female Artist while the piano man nabbed two honors — Outstanding Male Artist and Outstanding Song for ‘All of Me.’
Other winners included Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell Williams for their collaborative work on ‘Blurred Lines.’ R&B newcomer K. Michelle received an award for Outstanding New Artist. LL Cool J nabbed a trophy for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for ‘NCIS: Los Angeles.’
Finally, R&B artists Charlie Wilson and Janelle Monae won awards for Outstanding Album (‘Love, Charlie’) and Outstanding Music Video (‘Q.U.E.E.N.’), respectively.
The highlight of the event, according to EURweb, was the elegiac tribute to the late South African leader Nelson Mandela.
Oprah Winfrey saluted him as a leader with enormous strength and passion. “He was everything we have all have heard and more,” she said. “He was humble and he was unscathed by any kind of bitterness after all that we know he’s been through.” Afterward, Stevie Wonder performed a musical tribute to Mandela.
Overall, it was a phenomenal night of black excellence.
