Random Axe Reunite on Black Milk's 'Scum'

Facebook

Random Axe is back as the trio of Black Milk, Sean Price and Guilty Simpson reunite on the new single, ‘Scum.’ The track is off Black Milk’s upcoming album, ‘If There’s A Hell Below.’

The group unleashes the vicious rhymes fans have come to expect on a diverse beat crafted by Black Milk. The song starts off with a slow-burning instrumental, which provides the background to Black Milk’s rhymes on the harsh realities of growing up in Detroit.

“Random, random, push till they fall back / Grabbing a ball bat while I’m grabbing the hard hat / Hard act to follow, we the hard pill to swallow / You cotton that sit in the aspirin bottle / Random Axe smash the throttle / Grew up where it’s ice cold / Where n—-s gamble with their life like dice roll / This ain’t a light show, but you see them red and blues flashing on the screen, channel seven news / Where those little dudes reach for rugers / Never surf the Internet, never own computers / You know the name, don’t know the face, then he the mover / Whoever’s the quietest in the room, then he the shooter,” Black Milk raps.

The beat then switches up to a more traditional boom bap style as Sean Price comes in with his rugged bars. Black Milk flips the script yet again as the production evolves into a more futuristic sound reminiscent of his work on 2008′s ‘Tronic.’ This portion serves as the playground for Guilty Simpson as he declares, “Once again, it’s Mr. I am not your friend.”

The song is truly a testament to Black Milk’s work ethic and creativity as he easily could’ve turned this into three standalone tracks, but instead crafted one truly unique record.

Black Milk’s ‘If There’s A Hell Below’ is scheduled to drop on Oct. 28, and is available for pre-order now on his official Bandcamp page.

Rita Ora Goes Sporty for Teen Vogue Cover

Rita OraTeen Vogue

With the recent release of her Adidas line, Rita Ora went to the basketball court for the November issue of Teen Vogue.

Unlike her red carpet looks, Rita goes for something more sporty, casual and comfortable. She sports some wet-looking hair paired with natural makeup, which goes well with the entire aesthetic. The U.K. singer appears in a number of colorful sporty fashions that include hoodies, sweats and caps.

Rita’s buzz has been heavy recently due to her collaboration with Iggy Azalea, a role in the upcoming film, ’50 Shades of Grey,’ and her summer hit, ‘I Will Never Let You Down.’ And while that track was recorded while she was happy and in love with her then-boyfriend, Calvin Harris (only to go through a very public breakup), she’s still a girl who got heartbroken.

“Without complaining, without being moany, because this is what I have wanted to do all my life, I think it’s that people may forget I’m just a 23-year-old girl who wants to be in love,” she told Teen Vogue. “And even though I live and breathe my job, I still want someone to want me. That’s how every girl feels.”

Aside from talking relationships, Rita delves into her many projects and shares more about the album that everyone’s waiting for in the new issue of Teen Vogue, which hits newsstands on Oct. 28.

Dej Loaf Signs to Columbia Records?

Cindy Ord, Getty Images

Detroit rapper Dej Loaf has inked a deal with Columbia Records.

According to a report by HITS Daily Double, Columbia Records is servicing Dej Loaf’s breakthrough single, ‘Try Me,’ to radio and the song will be added into rotation on Oct. 28.

It appears the success of ‘Try Me’ has earned Dej Loaf a major label deal as her single became a viral hit due to endorsements from industry giants like Drake and Wiz Khalifa. The track has been heavily remixed by a variety of artists while Def Loaf just released a video for the single last month.

For now, neither Dej Loaf nor Columbia Records are confirming that she’s been signed to the label. But, both sides are not denying the report either. “Columbia Records has not issued a release or commented either way,” said Columbia in a statement given to The Fader.

The BoomBox will keep you updated once more information on the signing is confirmed. In the meantime, vote for Dej Loaf’s ‘Try Me’ in The Boombox Battle below. This week, she competes with Chicago’s own Lil Durk, who remixes her track. Voting closes on Oct. 21.

Common Explains How He Stays Lyrically Fit [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]

For over two decades, Common has always remain lyrically sharp.

In this informative segment of our ’16 Bars’ series, presented by Honda, the Chicago wordsmith explains his routine of staying lyrically fit. Up-and-coming rappers please take notes.

1. Stay “In Tune” to the People.

For Common, staying in tune means he’s always aware of his surroundings. He’s observes where he lives, how people are interacting with him and with other folks. In essence, he becomes a sociologist. “In tune is just being able to listen sometimes [and] being able to say your own perspective,” he explains. “I stay in tune to the people.”

2. Appreciate Art and Life.

To stay lyrically fit, rappers shouldn’t be in the strip clubs 24 hours a day. For Common, he embraces art and life. “I digest art. For an MC to grow, you have to be growing in life,” he explains. “I like to experience life. Some of my stores come from that.”

3. Study the Lyrical Greats in Hip-Hop

Common also studies other great MCs to remind him of the level he should be at when it comes to rhyming.

“Recently, I’ve been listening to Rakim and Biggie a lot and remembering the level [of greatness] that it should be at,” he explains. “Just because I like what’s going on now, and some of the artists are bringing some great things to the table, I still know where my level of rhyming should be at.”

These are some smart tips. Check out the bonus video below to hear Common talk about freestyling and how he rap battle fellow Chicagoan Kanye West back in the days. Who do you think won that contest? Find out below.

Rich Gang Take KareAudiomack

Rich Gang had everyone singing along to their summer hit ‘Lifestyle’ and the group returns with the follow-up single, ‘Take Kare.’ On the song, Young Thug collaborates for the first time with his mentor Lil Wayne.

Over a moody, piano-driven beat, courtesy of London on Da Track, the rap duo cater to the ladies and all of their worldly desires.

“Hop inside a Bentley with a red paper plate / Every time they hate I throw them bands like a bouquet / I ain’t Ray J but you can be my Kim K,” raps Thugger.

Meanwhile, Weezy, who raps in the same flow as Thug, promises his lady shopping sprees and lavish lifestyle.

“Gotta open new accounts cause the others overcrowded / Gotta open up the stores when they’re closed when we shoppin’ / For my girl, wear the clothes that ain’t nobody rockin’ / She so bad, I don’t know what to do with her,” he spits.

‘Take Kare’ will appear on an upcoming Rich Gang 2 compilation, which is expected to be released before the year’s end. In the meantime, you can listen to the ‘Rich Gang: The Tour Part 1′ mixtape here.

Kanye West Compares Himself to the Great Michelangelo in New GQ Video

Kanye WestGQ

We all know that Kanye West is a constant perfectionist. So in a behind-the-scenes video for his August GQ magazine cover story, the rapper-producer discusses the height to which his perfectionism goes.

In the clip, which can be viewed here, Yeezy feels that everyone should utilize their voice to the best of their abilities.

“If you’re given a voice, if you’re given an opportunity to have a voice, you have to take that seriously out of appreciation for the opportunity given,” he said.

‘Ye then talks about his goals and explains why being perfect doesn’t satisfy him enough — he wants to go to a higher level.

“For me, it’s a fight. Most people are just satisfied with, ‘It’s good.’ Most people are satisfied at like just a 10, or something,” he explained. “It’s not to just stop at 10. You know, 10 is ground zero; perfection is ground zero. We need to take things to a genius level, that’s when you do stuff that’s perfect, that’s past what’s expected.”

As an example of this, apparently West styled his own GQ fashion shoot. The ‘Bound 2′ rapper even re-tailored his pants to make sure they fit right for the shoot. At the end of the video, West compares himself to the great painter Michelangelo.

“Michelangelo decides he wants to sculpt, there could be a bunch of sculptors that are like, ‘Oh, no, you’re a painter,’” he says. “But he’s Michelangelo. And I am Kanye West.”

What do you think? Is Kanye West the Michelangelo of hip-hop? Sound off in the comments below.

Dee-1 Rejects Negativity on 'Against Us'

Erika Goldring, Getty Images

Fresh off an appearance at the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards as part of the annual cyphers, Dee-1 unleashes a new song, ‘Against Us,’ the first single off his forthcoming EP, due out in early 2015.

While many rappers feel they must dumb it down when they sign to a major label, Dee-1 has shown that won’t be the case for him during his tenure at RCA Records. The New Orleans, La., MC calls his latest track “a game-changing anthem that the world needs right now” and says that “it symbolizes the war against negativity.” The Rico Beats-produced record sees Dee-1 being as direct as possible.

“I love everybody, I don’t like most of ‘em / Why, the main ones you gotta watch be close to ya / Black people, we tore up from the floor up / Backstabbing, conniving and plotting, we need to grow up / Every rapper talking ’bout taking somebody girl / Everything on TV oversexualized, man I really hate this world / Black people robbing black people, black people killing more black people, these are facts people / Looking at my own people wondering if they plotting / Smile so bright, heart so rotten / Pick you apart like cotton / We new slaves hanging ourselves minus the noose / Oops, I’m signed, but still spitting the truth,” Dee-1 raps.

‘Against Us’ can be purchased now on iTunes.
