Nina Sky Gets High on Love With Smoke DZA for 'Stoners'

Nina Sky StonersSoundcloud

It’s been awhile since we heard from Nina Sky, but they’re back with a new song just in time for the smoker’s holiday 4/20. Based on the title, you would think the song is about getting high. Well, not quite. ‘Stoners’ is a hallucinating love ballad.

Produced by Sky Ndgo, the song boasts a throbbing beat with hazy synths tailor-made for the clubs.

On the track, the R&B duo sings the praises of a lover who keeps them high on love — no rolling papers needed.

“A night cap on a long work day / One hit straight to your face / So stoned from the love we make / A hangover that you can take,” they coo together on the song.

On the chorus, Nina Sky sings, “We are gonna be the stoners / Take a trip like this / You keep me higher than a spaceship flyin’ / The stoners / Take a trip like this / There’s nothing higher, I’m addicted to your kiss.”

Smoke DZA, aka the Kush God, comes through to drop a weeded-out rhyme where he metaphorically compares toking on a joint to love-making.

If you have any romantic plans on 4/20, play this song and take flight with Nina Sky.

Miguel Joins Santana on Guitar-Driven Ballad 'Indy'

Carlos Santana gained worldwide fame with his millennial albums ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Shaman,’ respectively. The legendary guitarist has a great knack for collaborating with the right artist to create fantastic songs. This time around, Santana taps Miguel for the guitar-driven ballad, ‘Indy.’

On the minimalist track, Miguel sings of being mesmerized by the beauty of a woman that catches his eye. The singer compares her body to the temple of doom from the ‘Indiana Jones’ movies, which explains the song’s title.

But Miguel’s come-ons win when he asks if she was sent from the heavens.

“I would like to lay ya, way up in the Himalayas,” he sings over Santana’s wailing guitars. “No need to be modest baby / You appear to be goddess, baby / Sweet, unholy thoughts of you.”

‘Indy’ is a beautiful song that will most likely get played at summer weddings.

Santana is set to release his new album ‘Corazón’ on May 6. The collection features guest appearances from Pitbull, Ziggy Marley, Romeo Santos and Gloria Estefan.

RZA Addresses Wu-Tang Affiliate Christ Bearer Cutting Off Penis (@rza)

This past Wednesday, April 16th Andre "Christ Bearer" Johnson of Long Beach, CA duo Northstar, cut off his penis and attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the second story balcony of his Hollywood apartment. Once found on the sidewalk at 1 a.m., he was rushed to the hospital where it was determined it wouldn't be possible to re-attach his member.

Northstar was previously signed to Wu-Tang Productions and released their debut album a little over a decade ago. XXL magazine caught up with RZA to verify his current affiliation with the Wu, and get his reaction to these unfortunate events.

"First of all, I just had seen him recently. He had got out of jail and [was] calling me," RZA said. "Christ Bearer is a part of the West Coast Killa Beez, a bunch of young guys that was signed to our company 10 years ago. Wu-Tang, we're from the East Coast. But we did invest in some young guys to try and help any hood. He was a guy from the hood that we gave a shot. I don't make music with him nowadays. But the story—what he did—is incredible. That sh*t sound mythical."

RZA also questioned Johnson's mental health, saying what happened sounds deeper than just being high:

"I feel sad for his family first and foremost; I know he has children," RZA said. "I thought he was a smarter guy than a guy who would do something crazy like that. But at the same time, he been in jail recently, he's been in trouble. Maybe he's mentally unstable. Maybe the mental health system should have took a look at him and said, 'You know what? We got to hold on to this guy for a little longer.' Because it's not any sanity; even if you high, this sh*t don't sound sane. This sounds more than high. It sound like mental problems or something that was bothering this man's mind, and he needed help. It's sad. I send my respect out to his family."

Neighbors in the building told police that Johnson was not on any "hard drugs." Do you agree with RZA that it had to be something deeper?

This or That? 100s vs. 100X

Years before Dame Dash recruited State Property from the East Coast’s most maligned state, 100X was putting on for Philadelphia. It began in 1988, when a North Philly group called The Untouchables, made up of rappers Magnificent Mar, Round Mound and Dangerous Darryl along with producer L.E. Square, released a 12″ single, ‘MC Killin / Death Wish,’ on the Solid Ground label. They were apprentices to Poison Ladd S.L.R. and Extortionist B, who had released their own 12″ ‘Rock the 8 (808) / I Need Juanita’ one year prior. The Untouchables saw little success, and Dangerous Darryl soon left the group while the remaining members quarreled over the lack of samples in their production.

L.E. Square and Round Mound (a.k.a. Are Em) were brothers, so living in the same household at the time had an influence on older brother Square, who decided to embrace the inclusion of samples in his beats after increased pressure from his sibling. With the newfound production sound, the duo decided to start a loose collective of artists called 100X, short for their neighborhood of 10th and Oxford. They brought MCs like Bad Newz, Lex Ruger, Mal Black, and Mustafo on board and began shopping a demo to labels. None of them bit.

One interesting bit about the group’s early career involves Greg Osby, a young saxophone player from New Jersey who had a contract with Blue Note in the early ’90s. 100X would often perform at Philly’s Club Rhythm and the venue’s owner Tony introduced the group to Greg, who cited hip-hop as an influence in his work. Tony recorded with the group in 1992 and together they wound up with ’3D Lifestyles,’ an album that was in line with the jazzy rap styles of Gang Starr and Tribe Called Quest. The sound of 1993′s ’3D Lifestyles’ would later come to full fruition with The Roots, but at the time Blue Note wasn’t sure how to market the album and the opportunity to push the sound was bungled.

All of this predates 100X’s first official single, ‘Beyond The Door,’ in 1994. A year before they’d recorded a track called ‘Horrorcore’ which again was in line with a style that would come to popularity in ’94 with Gravediggaz and Flatlinerz. ‘Beyond The Door’ was popular within North Philly, but fans were left hanging for two years until the ‘Fast Loot Tactics EP’ dropped in ’96. The EP was proper but the group had waited too long to capitalize on what little popularity they had and as members drifted away, the group soon disbanded. Later on, they would release two compilations of material worth excavating: ‘Rare & Unreleased 1992-1996′ and ‘Whom Shall I Fear? 1993-1995.’

In 2012, on the other side of the country, a brighter story was coming to light. Berkeley rapper 100s and his right hand man Joe Wax released ‘Ice Cold Perm,’ an out-of-the-blue project that is easily one of the best rap releases in recent years. The cohesion of pimp raps and sizzling synths made the duo a drop-dead combo, and this year’s ‘IVRY EP,’ even with the inclusion of outside producers, elevated their blunted sound to a psychedelic realm. The music is purely hedonistic, but if you let the groove sink in, 100s will have you coming back for more. One need only test the back-to-back magic of ‘Different Type Of Love’ and ‘Slide On Ya’ to be sure.

Comparing 100X and 100s is like deciding between blunts and beers — ideally, you want both as part of your daily diet. The Philly rappers give you a dark, gritty foundation with certain rappers even sounding like Freeway and Ghostface (see ‘Fast Loot Tactics’ for proof), while 100s is that fresh off of work, slide across the floor s–t to bop to. In other words, they highlight each other’s specific contexts as a way to appreciate the differences in their music – you probably won’t find many lowriders blasting ‘Death 2 The Radio’ in Cali.

So we’ll take the easy route this week – they both win. Smoke mid-grade out of an apple to 100X or finesse an expensive bong to the glossy sounds of 100s. Whichever you choose, you’ll be better for it.

Drake's 'Draft Day' Gets Unofficial NSFW Video

Filmmaker Ashley Smith (aka Ash Innovator) is back with another head-scratching video that is completely NSFW. The director shot a clip for Drake’s song ‘Draft Day,’ a song in which he throws a couple of shots at Jay Z.

If you’re not familiar with Ash Innovator’s work, he’s the guy that directed the comical unofficial video for Rick Ross’ ‘The Devil Is a Lie.’ The visual features two priests reciting Rozay’s and Hov’s decadent rhymes.

In his new explicit clip for Drake’s ‘Draft Day,’ a naked blonde woman is spitting Drizzy’s acerbic rhymes in a blood-drenched room surrounded by dead bodies and a hanging football player.

The visual gets even more bizarre as a masked man devours spaghetti out of a pork belly. There’s also some simulated necrophilia and booty twerking as well.

So yeah, there’s a lot going on with this bizarre video.

Overall, it’s an interesting visual from Ash Innovator, who also shot a video for YG’s song ‘Who Do You Love.’

Again, we stress that this ‘Draft Day’ video is NSFW. So if you value your job don’t play this when the boss is around.

Prince to Reissue 'Purple Rain' Under New Deal With Warner Bros.

PrinceWarner Bros.

Prince and his former record label Warner Bros. Records parted ways more than 20 years ago. Today (April 18), the Purple One and the label have rekindled their musical partnership to release some exciting new projects.

According to a press release (via City Pages), the new deal gives the R&B icon ownership of all his master recordings, something that he’s been fighting for since leaving the label in the mid-’90s.

Under the new deal, Prince plans to release a digitally re-mastered, deluxe version of his classic 1984 album ‘Purple Rain’ in celebration of its 30th anniversary this summer. The collection will include “long-awaited previously unheard music,” but it’s unclear of what that material would be.

In addition, Prince will record a new album for Warner Bros., which is rumored to be the ‘Plectrum Electrum’ LP with his band 3rd Eye Girl.

“A brand-new studio album is on the way and both Warner Bros Records and Eye are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship,” Prince said in the press release.

Cameron Strang, Chairman & CEO Warner Bros. Records, is also ecstatic of their new partnership with Prince. “Everyone at Warner Bros Records is delighted to be working with Prince once again: he is one of the world’s biggest stars and a truly unique talent,” he said. “We are also very excited about the release of new and re-mastered music from one of his greatest masterpieces.”

Congratulations to Prince and his new deal with Warner Bros. Records. Now let’s get crazy!

50 Cent Calls Puffy's 'Big Homie' Single Garbage (@IamDiddy @50Cent)

50 Cent has voiced his opinions on fellow hip hop veterans Puffy and Jay Z and their ability to stay relevant.

In an interview with radio station Baltimore's 92Q Jams, the rapper shared his thoughts on Puffy's resurgence in music, and why he doesn't like the single "Big Homie."

"If the guy doesn't have significant savvy with the actual business or with the actual culture he'll be out of here," he said. "You'll see Jay around as long as he's been around. What he's on like 11 albums? Puff's still out there. He don't even need a record. Cause he don't got one. Like you know Puffy ain't got no music that you wanna hear. That 'Big Homie' s***is garbage. I'mma keep it all the way real with you. Because the guy says 'Don't worry about if I write my rhymes, I write checks.' And then sings to you."

He also talked about his upcoming album Animal Ambition and how far he's come as an emcee and a storyteller.

"The whole project is about prosperity," he said." I wrote this giving you portions of my journey. And it's what actually got me here. Like Get Rich Or Die Tryin 'was all the dysfunctional behaviors I experienced. It had everything that was in the environment that I came across. Whether it was 'P.I.M.P.' or 'High All The Time.' The junkie—When you see a guy that is actually high all the time, you understand why I actually wrote 'High All The Time.' It's just me actually using things literally around me. This project is even easier to pinpoint real cool things to write about because of the actual second half of that actual journey."

Tony Yayo Fires Back at 50 Cent: I Took Bullets for G-Unit (@50cent, @tonyyayo)

50 Cent recently hit up NYC's The Breakfast Club to talk in depth about new music, family and the recent tension between himself and former G-Unit allies, Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks. Both artists had big hits and equally impressive sales early in their careers, but have since fallen off the radar. 50 obviously noticed the two rappers lose fans' attention, and said in regards to Yayo:

"Some people are like milk...they have an expiration date."

Many Hip-Hop fans were taken aback by the comment, feeling that 50 and Yayo's friendship went back much further than the music, and that such a comment would've been better kept in close circles.

Yayo took to Twitter to express his disappointment in 50's comment, saying he took bullets for the crew and was a major part in building its brand.

Did Big Sean Cheat On Naya Rivera With a 'Glee' Cast Member? (@NayaRivera @BigSean)

Big Sean is now facing accusations that he cheated on his ex-fiance Naya Rivera with one of her co-stars from the hit show Glee.

According to Fashion Times, reasons of fidelity have been the reason for the big breakup, but Naya allegedly found out about the hook up through text messages on the rapper's phone.

"She screamed at The Fiancé about why - of all the people in the world - why would he f*ck around with one of her colleagues? The Fiance couldn't even deny it. The evidence was right there on his phone," the report says. Tensions are high on set since Rivera's breakup.

A recent report by TMZ confirms problems with production after Rivera stormed off the set after a heated debate with co-star Lea Michele on Tuesday. While Naya's sources accused Michelle of being a diva, Michelle's sources state that they weren't shooting scenes together and that Rivera was kicked off the set.
