After months of secrecy, phantom rapper Your Old Droog has revealed his identity. Although we don’t know his real name, we can at least confirm that he’s not Nas — many thought Droog was the Queens-bred rhymer’s alter ego since they sound similar.
In the video for ‘Just Rhymin’ With Skizz,’ Droog displays his lyrical skills while DJ Skizz is on the turntables scratching the DJ Premier-produced beat.
“Ruling the street with an alias, and they lovin it / A dictator, ain’t nobody calling out my government / Even if you ‘know me’ you phony / Catch me on my lonely, I play paranoid like Tony Iommi,” he raps.
In the past couple of months, Droog has taken the Internet by storm with his intriguing wordplay over boom-bap beats. Songs like ‘Sleepers, ‘Free Turkey‘ and the rap ballad ‘On the News‘ show that he’s a true wordsmith with lots of creativity.
Next week, Your Old Droog will prove just how good he is as an MC onstage in New York City. The Coney Island-based rapper will perform live in front of an audience at Webster Hall on Sept. 3. You can cop tickets here.
Hopefully, this event will establish Drogg as a legitimate rapper and possibly secure him a record deal.
