Kendrick Lamar‘s new Billboard cover story finds the rapper defending Iggy Azalea, but it’s his comments on the shooting death of Michael Brown and police brutality that has caught the wrath of Azealia Banks.
When asked about Brown and other cases of police violence, Kendrick was candid in his response. “I wish somebody would look in our neighborhood knowing that it’s already a situation, mentally, where it’s f—ed up. What happened to [Michael Brown] should’ve never happened. Never. But when we don’t have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us? It starts from within. Don’t start with just a rally, don’t start from looting — it starts from within.”
To Azealia, this appeared as if Kendrick was blaming the victims of police brutality. She took to Twitter to blast him for what she deems to be the “dumbest s— I’ve ever heard a black man say.”
She closes with, “HOW DARE YOU open ur face to a white publication and tell them that we don’t respect ourselves…. Speak for your f—-ing self.”
The ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ rapper accused him of putting down his fellow black people with the statement regarding lack of respect for self. “HOW DARE YOU open ur face to a white publication and tell them that we don’t respect ourselves…. Speak for your f—ing self,” Azalea writes.
