Jaden Smith is proving that he’s more than just the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith; he’s a bona fide artist with his latest track, ‘Melancholy.’
Sampling Pink Floyd’s 1973 song, ‘Breathe,’ he raps about negative comments thrown at kids born to celebrity parents, legitimacy in the music industry and even pokes some fun at himself and his decision to do the remake of ‘Karate Kid.’
“Oh, you say you want some more? / Well your father paid for all of this / If I was rapping like you, I’d help the world and call it quits / And I just rap at you anonymous / I hide behind my hate because I wish I had your confidence / But understand my only option is / To go to school and try to be friends with all these obnoxious kids / I don’t hate you / I’m jealous of how you got to live,” he delivers on the slow beat.
Jaden’s deep vocals offset the voice of his sister Willow, who provides the ethereal feel on the track.
The actor-turned-rapper previously released the piano-driven tune ‘Blue Ocean,’ giving us a preview of what’s to come from his burgeoning music career. ‘Melancholy’ is the latest track off his upcoming mixtape, ‘Cool Tape, Vol. 2.’
