The BET Hip-Hop Awards aren’t known for featuring very many emotional moments, but it had two big ones this year. The first happened when Common brought out Mike Brown’s parents during his performance of ‘Kingdom.’ The second was when Doug E. Fresh accepted his “I Am Hip-Hop” award.
Doug E. Fresh’s acceptance speech took an emotional turn when he started to shout out women. He broke down in tears because of a loss he suffered just over a month ago.
“I lost my mother five weeks ago,” he said through tears. “I would like to acknowledge my mother because she was there for me since day one. My mother had Alzheimer’s and before she passed away she made a voice recording.”
He played the voice recording and touched many who saw this vulnerable moment. But the heartbreak soon turned into joy as he performed his 1985 classic ‘La Di Da Di’ with Snoop Dogg spitting Slick Rick’s rhymes.
