Between the likes of Macklemore, Danny Brown and Odd Future, it’s becoming more and more apparent that you no longer need love from the mainstream rap media to be successful in hip-hop. With his newly released album, ‘These Things Happen,’ projected to sell around 45,000 first-week copies — that’s more than double what TDE darling Ab-Soul is expected to shift — Oakland native G-Eazy is poised to become indie rap’s next big success story.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt when Rick Ross decides to remix your song either. Since the release of his own ‘Mastermind’ LP earlier this year, the MMG mogul has been jumping on tracks left, right and center — from K Camp’s ‘Cut Her Off’ to Usher’s ‘Good Kisser’ — and now G-Eazy’s ‘I Mean It’ has caught Rozay’s ear. With its sinister, strung-out production, the song is practically tailor-made for the Bawse to grunt out some of those chest-pounding bars about that expensive lifestyle.
It’s no secret that Ross is partial to a white lie here and there, but when he says, “Black Bottle Boys and I been a boss / Riding out in Paris with my ceiling off,” just know that he means it.
