It wasn’t too surprising when the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that Rihanna would be the recipient of the 2014 CFDA Fashion Icon Award. To show her gratitude for the honor, the ‘Pour It Up’ singer graced the red carpet with one of her most couture (and shocking) style choices yet on Monday evening (June 2) in New York.
The pop star was the center of attention wearing a custom-made Adam Selman sheer floor-length gown. The dress was covered in 216,000 Swarovski crystals and Rihanna chose to wear beige feather boa around her arms as an accessory. The shocking part of the outfit, which didn’t leave much to the imagination, was the fact that her breasts and butt were on full display.
RiRi also wore a matching mesh-like kerchief to give the overall look an old Hollywood glamour meets roaring ’20s feel. With the confidence that she carries time and time again, only someone like the Bajan beauty could pull it off.
Rihanna wasn’t only at the ceremony to show off her assets and fashion-forward style but also to accept the award, which she received from Vouge’s longtime editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
“Growing up I didn’t have a lot of access to fashion,” she said during her speech. “But as far as I could remember, fashion has always been my defense mechanism. Even as a child I remember thinking, “She can beat me, but she cannot beat my outfit.” And to this day I mean, that is how I think about it. I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion.
“And so really, you really can … I enjoy the most that you can tell so much about who someone is just by their style — the way they put fashion together. And I think fashion has been an outlet for me to express myself, to speak up, to say who I am and to be very loud about it at times, and I just like to have fun with it. Fashion is just a world of thrills, it’s exciting, there’s no rules, there’s just … I mean, she has tons of rules [gestures at Anna Wintour, audience laughs] … Scratch that! Scratch that! There are rules. But rules are meant to be broken.”
She also thanked MAC “for keeping my face so cute” and all the stylists who helped her get to where she is on the style map, especially Mel Outtenberg.
“You get me,” she said. “You honestly get me, and you understand what I’m trying to say. I can send you two pictures, and you bring back the rack full of exactly what I wanted. There’s nothing better than that because fashion should never be frustrating. It should be fun! Make it easy to me.”
