The Chicago hip-hop community has lost another artist to senseless violence. Rapper OTF NuNu, who is Lil Durk‘s cousin, was shot and killed in the parking lot of the city’s Chatham Village Square Mall on Saturday (May 31).
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, NuNu (real name McArthur Swindle), was sitting in his SUV at 3:20PM when someone walked up on the vehicle and opened fire. NuNu tried to escape, but after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, he crashed the car into a store.
Chicago police say that the shooting may have been gang related. The 21-year-old rapper’s aunt, Sherri Swindle, told the newspaper that NuNu wasn’t involved in any gangs and was taking college courses in Joliet outside of the city.
Three days prior to his death, NuNu, who also go by the rap name Nuski, released a music video with Lil Durk called ‘OC.’ In addition, the rapper was working on a new mixtape, ‘Nuski Got da Strap,’ due out in the summer.
“This was going to be his big breakout project,” said Merk Murphy, who runs a studio where NuNu was recording his mixtape. “He was one of those kids who saw an opportunity to put himself in a better position with his music.”
NuNu’s aunt, Sherri Swindle, wants the violence to end in Chicago. “It needs to stop,” she said. “He was a good person. He was a kindhearted person. He had a lot of soul.”
NuNu leaves behind a young daughter, according to family members.
Upon word of Nunski’s death, his girlfriend, Chalice Chanel, and several music artists went on Twitter to express their condolences.
We want to send our heartfelt condolences to Swindle’s family. Stop the violence and increase the peace!
