The finger that launched a million dollar lawsuit. When M.I.A. flipped the bird during the 2012 Super Bowl, she probably had no idea of the financial and legal repercussions her gesture would bring. The NFL is now demanding $16.6 million from the singer for her ‘Give Me All Your Luvin” performance alongside Nicki Minaj and Madonna.
The Hollywood Reporter shares that the NFL first pursued a $1.5 million arbitration against M.I.A. for “breaching her performance contract and tarnishing its goodwill and reputation.” This new $15.1 million suit is “restitution” based on what advertisers could have paid for ads during the time M.I.A. was on-screen. “The claim for restitution lacks any basis in law, fact, or logic,” say M.I.A.’s response papers, filed on Friday (March 14).
The outspoken performer took to Twitter to air out her anger over the new charges.
