New York Mom Dead After Plastic Surgery in Dominican Republic

A New York mother has died after undergoing botched plastic surgery in the Dominican Republic. She leaves behind a four-year-old daughter.

Beverly Brignoni, 28, was one of hundreds of foreigners who travel to the island nation each year for cosmetic procedures which would cost them three times as much in the United States.

In Brignoni's case, something went terribly wrong. She died February 20 from what the doctor told her family was a massive pulmonary embolism while getting a tummy tuck and liposuction at a Santo Domingo clinic recommended by friends.

Family members are demanding that local authorities investigate Brignoni's death.

"We want to know exactly what happened," said Bernadette Lamboy, the woman's godmother. "We want to know if there was negligence."

Brignoni's relatives plan on filing a formal complaint with the district attorney's office for Santo Domingo, at which point an investigation should commence.

The DR, along with countries such as Costa Rica, Mexico, and Thailand, has promoted itself as a destination for medical tourism, where patients can relax at a resort for a few days after undergoing procedures.

Brignoni's final Facebook post was a photo she took of her hands holding her passport and boarding pass for her flight from New York to Santo Domingo.
