Nas’ 1994 debut album, ‘Illmatic,’ is undoubtedly one of the most important rap albums in hip-hop history. To commemorate the LP’s two-decade anniversary, Sony Legacy will release a 20th anniversary edition entitled ‘Illmatic XX’ on April 15.
The double-CD collection will feature 10 tracks from the original album and 10 additional songs of unreleased demos, remixes and freestyles.
In addition to the 20th anniversary effort, Nas will embark on a U.S. tour performing the seminal album in its entirety. The trek will begin with a special performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., on March 28 and 29. Then the Queens, N.Y., MC will perform ‘Illmatic’ at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival in April.
The ‘Illmatic XX’ is available now for pre-order on iTunes and both the 2CD set and 1 LP vinyl are ready to order via Amazon.com.
“With Illmatic, I didn’t think about it. I just did it,” said Nas. “I believe everybody has good instincts. Now I’m a man from that past and I’m supremely grateful. There’s a Nigerian proverb ‘What is past is prologue.’ I’m here today because of ‘Illmatic.’
