Close to 2,000 unmarked graves have been discovered beneath the University of Mississippi's Medical Center Campus location, school officials say.
Ole Miss had plans to build a new parking structure, and discovered the mass grave after a land survey was conducted on the school's property.
"We've always known there were graves on this site, many of them unmarked. It was really a matter of knowing how many and where," said University of Mississippi spokesman Jack Mazurak to Mississippi News Now.
Reburial would be a costly effort, running the university $6 million, an amount officials claim they can't afford.
