No one can sing heartbreak and pain like Mary J. Blige. On Monday (Sept. 22), the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul released a powerful ballad called ‘Whole Damn Year.’ The song is from Blige’s upcoming album, ‘The London Sessions,’ which is due Dec. 2 on Capitol Records.
Penned by British songbird Emeli Sande, ‘Whole Damn Near’ features Blige sharing her seasonal pains after a tumultuous breakup.
“Winter took most of my heart / Spring punch right in the stomach / Summer came looking for blood / And by autumn I was left with nothing,” she sings over a sorrowful piano groove.
Blige later adds, “It took a whole damn year to repair my body / It’s been a bad five years / Gone take a long, long year for me to trust somebody.”
The ‘Right Now’ singer spent most of the summer working on the ‘London Sessions’ project with producers Disclosure, Sam Smith, ‘Jimmy’ Napes, Naughty Boy and Sam Romans in London.
“It’s all about the London Music scene and I’m so excited to have been part of it, to record my album,” Blige said in a statement. “The songs are fun, therapeutic and soulful.”
