Quick! One Last New Release for 2014!
(Happy New Year from my new roommates) |
My first thought was: I'm not just going to add to the infinite pile of year end top ten lists with today's post. No way, not gonna do it. So what should I do? Pontificate about how much better/worse 2014 was than 2013? Summarize every post I made over the course of the year? Write a retrospective on "A Surf M.C. New Year?" [Note to self: that's actually a good one; save that idea for 2016!] No, what we need most right now is just a good, new release. And fortunately, one just arrived in the mail last week.
A new, limited (100 copies - mine is #67) cassette release from Megakut Records. It's a split/ double A-side release, two EPs roughly 15 minutes each. Dankslob on one side, and J-Eazy & Brycon on the other.
Who the hell is Dankslob? No, you're right not to recognize the name; but you should recognize the actual artists. Dankslob is Luke Sick 's latest project. Pretty much every time he works with somebody new, he makes a new group name for it... Underbucket/ Grand Invincible, Brougham, Get the Hater, The Disturbers, Rime Force, Motel Crew, Yole Boys, Grand Killa Con... all these groups can be explained as "Luke Sick and ____." And this is the latest, and this time he's teamed up with G-Pek, the producer who made Z-Man's Don't Forget To Brag. Now that's a sweet match!
and it really works here. G-Pek really switches tones to work with Luke; he's got a real feel for tailoring his sound to match Luke's vibe. As dark and dank as their name and cover art imply, full of soundbites from The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (plus a little Barfly.and a few assorted clips), and Luke sounding as worn and world weary as ever. So many rappers seemed to have peaked around their second or third albums, but Luke just keeps getting better as he gets older, aging into perfectly tragic Hemmingway-style raconteur:
"Pop shit,
And loogie spit on everyone.
We on the couch.
Tell the bitch to shut its fucking mouth.
We like to slouch,
Think about how it's turning out.
We take our time;
Greg Pek knew this shit had clout.
I wasn't caring
'Till the hash all runnin' out.
Now we out,
But my feet hurt; I got the gout.
Them Earls bounce;
Suckers front like they really down.
But they never was;
They just some pussy clowns.
I made enough to eat and sleep;
That's how I got down.
I ate ribs,
Tried to live at the titty bar.
Don't even trip,
Holmes, ounce in the jelly jar."
I was all set to be disappointed, then, when I flipped this tape over. I mean, that would be fine, since Dankslob was perfect and more than worth the purchase in and of itself. But I've never heard of J-Eazy, this was gonna be some new jack piggybacking on Luke Sick. I know Brycon, though. He's the other half of Grand Killa Con with Luke Sick, and that was a solid album. So gotta give it a fair shot, at least.
Well, it's pretty good, too! I prefer the A-side (here's hoping Dankslob isn't a one-off!), but Damaged Goods, as its titled, is a cool bonus B-side. It's got a whole different feel to it, at once scrappier and more indie, but also bouncier and more upbeat. Think of it this way: if Dankslob is vintage Wu-Tang; Damaged Goods is vintage Killarmy. And just like with those Wu spin-off groups, it certainly doesn't hurt that the original Wu always drops by for a profile-rising guest appearance. Yeah, Luke Sick drops in and adds a verse and hook fora song called "Shattered Up" near the end (there's no track-listing or anything with this tape; but both groups posted song titles on their bandcamps).
This tape is really, really good. I mean, these Gurp City cats are consistently good; but I would even put this above their average. And like all their tapes, they're so well priced ($8, which includes shipping), it's a wonder there's any still available after an hour. Obviously, most of you people are still sleeping; and you're only going to regret it once you eventually realize how much they've been killing it over the years. Cop it here or continue missing out into 2015.

New Music? Lil Wayne Hits the Studio With Migos (@liltunechi @migosatl)
Southern rappers united as Lil Wayne and Migos gathered in the studio to record new music.
Jeezy and T.I. Join Dej Loaf for 'Try Me' Remix
As Jeezy is prone to do, he once again finds himself hopping on the remix to a big hit. Dej Loaf‘s ‘Try Me’ is the latest to receive such treatment from the southern rhymer. T.I. also delivers a verse.
The trio all come with solid contributions. Dej Loaf substitutes the gore of her original bars for some examples of her newfound wealth. T.I.’s g-code and chopper are still inseparable, as he informs us in double time. Jeezy, whose had a decent 2014 despite legal trouble, is aware of the trends of today.
“I’m in love with the CoCo / Here with my fo’ fo’,” Jeezy raps, coming off more defiant since he’s just beaten a gun charge.
Expect more from Dej Loaf (and more ‘Try Me’ remixes) in 2015.

Macklemore Discusses White Privilege, 2015 Grammys in Hot 97 Interview [VIDEO]
Race, cultural appropriation and privilege are hot on the minds of hip-hop fans and artists as of late. While many critics have blasted Iggy Azalea for her absence from the discussion, another prominent white rapper, Macklemore, is taking the issue head-on in a new interview with Hot 97.
In the sit-down, Macklemore openly accepts that he is given preferential treatment compared to his black counterparts. “Why am I safe? Why can I cuss on a record, have a parental advisory sticker on the cover of my album, yet parents are still like, ‘You’re the only rap I let my kids listen to’? Why can I wear a hoodie and not be labelled a thug? Why can I sag my pants and not be a gangbanger? Why am I on Ellen’s couch? Why am I on Good Morning America?” he asks.
“If I was black, what would my drug addiction look like?…To me, the privilege that exists in the music industry is just a greater symptom of the privilege that exists in America… It all boils down to privilege.”
The Seattle, Wash. native goes on to say that he needs to be a part of the racial conversation, unlike artists who opt to bow out. “As a white dude, as a white rapper, I’m like, how do I participate in this conversation? How do I get involved on a level where I’m not co-opting the movement, where I’m not making it about me, but also realizing the platform that I have and the reach that I have? And doing it in an authentic, genuine way?”
The rapper, who was seen protesting the no indictment decision for the police officer who shot Mike Brown earlier this year, wants his voice to be heard on this major issue. “It’s my privilege that I can be silent about this issue. And I’m tired of being silent about it… It is so imperative right now that we have this race conversation in America if we’re going to progress.”
The ‘Thrift Shop’ creator was a big part of the conversation at the Grammys earlier this year, not necessarily by choice. Macklemore beat artists like Kendrick Lamar in the Best Rap Album category for his ‘The Heist’ LP, which sparked outrage amongst rap fans who felt the latter was more deserving. The world found out he thought Kendrick “got robbed” when he posted a text message apologizing for taking home the win. “I made a mistake,” Macklemore acknowledges, looking back on his actions. “A lot of fear was going into that moment.”
When it comes to the 2015 Grammy nominees, Azalea (‘The New Classic’), Childish Gambino (‘Because the Internet’), Common (‘Nobody’s Smiling’), ScHoolboy Q (‘Oxymoron’), Eminem (‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2′) and Wiz Khalifa (‘Blacc Hollywood’) compete. One contender already has Macklemore’s vote. “I would love to see [ScHoolboy Q] win,” he says. “Q is one of my best friends in this industry. I’m gonna be biased.”
Take a look at Macklemore’s insightful interview above.

Fetty Wap vs. J. Cole – The Boombox Battle
When it seemed like Fabolous had last week’s Boombox Battle in the bag and was set for his fourth consecutive win, Fetty Wap moves past the Brooklyn rapper by taking over 87 percent of the fan vote with his song ‘Trap Queen.’
Hailing from Paterson, N.J., Fetty Wap’s ‘Trap Queen’ has been blowing up on the internet in many ways. With over 4 million listens on Soundcloud and more than 1.4 million views of the track’s video, the song has put Fetty on everyone’s radar and even landed him a deal with Lyor Cohen’s 300 Entertainment.
The mid-tempo tune showcases Fetty’s sing-song rapping approach and his songwriting skills, which feature him loving his girl, money and the bando.
“I’m like, ‘Hey, what’s up, hello’ / Seen yo pretty ass soon as you came in that door / I just wanna chill, got a sack for us to roll / Married to the money, introduced her to my stove / Showed her how to whip it, now she remixin’ for low / She my trap queen, let her hit the bando / We be countin’ up, watch how far them bands go,” he delivers on the first verse.
J. Cole is Fetty’s opponent in this week’s battle with ‘Apparently,’ a personal ode which finds him questioning his position and the strength of his faith to persevere. The Fayetteville, N.C. rapper also shows us he can carry a tune by singing the hook.
“I keep my head high / I got my wings to carry me / I don’t know freedom / I want my dreams to rescue me / I keep my faith strong / I ask the Lord to follow me / I’ve been unfaithful / I don’t know why you call on me,” he delivers.
Who will win this week? Will Fetty Wap’s hard-hitting track take the votes? Or will J. Cole’s introspective song woo fans to his side? Only you can decide. Go vote for your favorite song in the poll below. Remember, you can vote once per hour until the poll closes on Tues., Jan. 6, 2015, at 10AM ET.

Kim Kardashian Tries to Keep Kanye West at Home
Is there trouble brewing in KimYe’s world? Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian have been hard at work building their dream mansion in Hidden Hills, Calif., and now, the reality TV star has apparently expanded the property in hopes of keeping her husband at home.
TMZ shares that Kim wants to outfit the new home with a basketball court and a full music studio for Kanye, so the rapper-producer doesn’t have to continue traveling elsewhere to record music. He’s spent time overseas in Paris creating new music, which keeps him away from his family.
Kanye’s perceived absence from Kim and the Kardashian clan has become something of media fodder since the couple tied the knot in May. The Chicago MC apparently skipped Thanksgiving with Kim and their daughter North to go to Paris, PageSix reports. In 2013, Kim’s own stepfather, Bruce Jenner, told ‘Extra‘ that Kanye was barely around during Kim’s pregnancy and chose to work on ‘Yeezus.’ “Actually, I’ve only met him once,” said Bruce. “He’s never… he’s not around. He was in Paris the whole time writing and he just hasn’t been around.”
Since the ‘Blood on the Leaves’ creator is working on new music with Paul McCartney, that home studio could come in handy right about now.

Ever since beating Kendrick Lamar for "Best Rap Album" during last year's Grammy's, Macklemore has had to acknowledge that his race may have helped him achieve the superstar status he holds today, and recently admitted to Hot 97 that he knows being white has helped his career tremendously, and has also led to the media going softer on him than his fellow rap peers.
